- On 20th April 2004, he resigned from his position as a commentator on ITV Sport after making a racist remark about a black player. This was ironically after a career dedicated to promoting black and Asian players in the game.
- As the manager of Manchester United FC (1981-1986), he won two FA Cups and one Charity Shield. He was succeeded by Alex Ferguson.
- He was the manager of Cambridge United FC (1974-1978), West Bromwich Albion FC (1978-1981), Manchester United FC (1981-1986, West Bromwich Albion FC (1987-1988), Sheffield Wednesday FC (1989-1991), Aston Villa FC (1991-1994), Coventry City (1995-1996), Sheffield Wednesday FC (1997-1998), Nottingham Forest (1999).
- His brother Graham (1943-2017) was also a professional footballer, playing for Aston Villa F.C. and Oxford United F.C..
