My standard complaint about the Black Hammer comics is that they’re mostly static, locked into an initial premise that wasn’t all that exciting to begin with. I suppose that’s in distinction to “real” superhero comics, which rely on the façade of change – someone is always dying, someone’s costume is always changing, someone is always making a heel-face turn, and worlds are inevitably always living and dying so that nothing will ever be the same – but it’s not self-reflective enough to count as irony.
But some kinds of stories aren’t supposed to change anything – the whole point is that they don’t, and can’t, change the things we already know. Jam comics by entirely different creators tend to fall into that bucket: they’re sometimes “real” and sometimes not, but even if they’re canonical, they don’t push the canon in any direction.

There are too many Marvel Comics out there to read them all — and I'm talking about both the current ongoing series, and the 85 years of accumulated material. The publisher is aware of this, so what's its solution to hook new readers?
In 2000, Marvel launched "Ultimate Marvel," a new series of comics set in a separate continuity from the original "Earth-616" comics. The Ultimate Marvel comics followed the classic heroes, from Spider-Man to the Avengers (renamed the Ultimates), getting their powers in a more contemporary-styled setting. These were comics written not to appeal to long-time, continuity-obsessed fans, but to hook the new generation of nerds obsessing over "Buffy" and "The X-Files." That reverberated back and Ultimate Marvel became the primary influence on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After highs and lows, Ultimate Marvel ended in 2015. In 2024, it returned ... sort of. Rather than a continuation of the old Ultimate Universe, Marvel has just...

On the dark roads of Gotham City, Bruce Wayne, otherwise called Batman, got hit hard by a betrayal. His love partner, Mio, accomplished something shocking by taking the life of somebody close to Bruce Wayne after his parents passed away.
Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman
This mess brought back all of the terrible memories from his young life, causing Batman to feel like he was suffocating his feelings. He had to manage a lot of old wounds, resuming them because of this betrayal. It’s kind of captivating to see how this entire situation meddled with Batman’s head and how it affected his emotions.
A Betrayal Left Bruce Wayne Emotionally Crippled
Bruce Wayne went through a difficult stretch when somebody close to him betrayed him, leaving him feeling all screwed up inside. Back when Bruce was only a youngster, he saw his parents get killed.

Netflix’s Daredevil series was widely acclaimed for its gripping storyline and fantastic cast, but what sets it apart from other Marvel projects at the time was its love for violence.
Daredevil from Marvel Comics
Indeed, the show promised brutal action as well as gory fight scenes, and while fans may think the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is gruesome enough, his comic book counterpart is way more wicked and evil.
Matt Murdock Mercilessly Attempts To Kill A Baby
Nerdak Comics from YouTube gave a summary of Matt Murdock’s most insane plot line in Marvel Comics. If he is portrayed in the show as reasonable, this comic book character is as ruthless as he can be.
“In one of Mysterio’s stranger schemes, he has relations with a woman and she becomes pregnant. After her child is born, she gives the baby to Daredevil believing he’s supposed to care for it.

The Crown Prince of Gotham is one of the most enigmatic characters in comic book history. Joker is the literal personification of the limit to which the human psyche can be corrupted; however, fans have long theorized about a secret Joker superpower that made him so unique.
This superpower was recently made canonical in Batman #145 by Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jiménez. In the comic, it is revealed that Daniel Captio, the mentor of Batman, also trained Joker in the same mental techniques, unlocking his superhuman power.

Batman Faces Super-Joker
In the storyline, Batman is imprisoned in Blackgate prison, and his violent and sadistic Zur-En-Arrh personality has taken over Failsafe, a titular robot that is part of Batman’s contingency plan. As Batman tries to take over control, he is overpowered and presented before Blackgate’s warden, who turns out to be Daniel Captio.

“Going to Hell for God is the logical end for the Catholic devil,” declares Matt Murdock in 2023’s Daredevil #12.
Matt Murdock isn’t the only religious superhero in the Marvel Universe. In addition to fellow Catholic Nightcrawler of the X-Men, there’s the Presbyterian Christian Wolfsbane, Muslim Ms. Marvel, pantheist Black Panther, and Jewish characters like Moon Knight and Kitty Pryde. But Daredevil might be the Marvel superhero whose religion plays the most pronounced role in his stories.
Of course, Daredevil isn’t the first Marvel hero to go to Hell and literally fight the Devil, as Ghost Rider, the X-Men, and anyone who had to deal with Mephisto can attest. But when it’s guilty Catholic Matt Murdock donning his Daredevil duds to deal with the Devil, then it’s a really big deal. Which is exactly why Chip Zdarsky — who wrote Daredevil #12 with artist Marco Checchetto, colorist Matthew Wilson,...

This Batman article contains spoilers.
Joker continuity is a bit messy by design. Ever since the Clown Prince of Crime declared that he “preferred multiple choice” in Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s seminal 1988 comic Batman: The Killing Joke, it’s been very tough to nail down just what is true and what isn’t about the villain’s origin story. Was the Joker once a failed comedian who went mad after criminals murdered his family and he fell into a vat of chemicals? Maybe. Or was he originally a crime boss known as the Red Hood? Is his real name actually Jack?
Multiple choice has mostly worked well for the Joker, who is meant to be Gotham’s embodiment of true evil. The fact that his story is indecipherable and ultimately unknowable makes him that much scarier of a threat for Batman. But things are getting a little too convoluted now.

"Daredevil" issue #1 was published in 1964, credited to Stan Lee and Bill Everett. However, for many, "Daredevil" didn't truly begin until Frank Miller took over the book in 1980. His run is where the Kingpin became Daredevil's nemesis and where Elektra was introduced. These are such foundational characters to subsequent "Daredevil" comics/adaptations that the first two decades without them feel like an anomaly.
Influenced by noir movies, Miller brought the grit to Hell's Kitchen. His narration captions were straight out of a detective dime novel. His art broke from the Bronze Age Marvel Comics house style with darker shading (inked mostly by Klaus Janson), hatch marks, and blood-splattered violence, further adding to the dark atmosphere of the writing.
Miller's run also began the edict "Matt Murdock must suffer." His love story with Elektra is a tragedy, and in Miller's ending arc "Born Again," Matt loses everything. Not coincidentally, Miller was the...

This post contains spoilers for Echo.
Not so long ago, a bright and insightful writer at the venerable pop culture site Den of Geek noted that the Kingpin of Crime Wilson Fisk could fill a gaping hole in the MCU. At the end of the fifth and final episode of Echo, that prediction looks even more sound.
Echo builds to a strange climax, in which Maya Lopez aka Echo gains indistinct superpowers and spreads them to her sister and grandmother to help them fight off Fisk and his men. But instead of punching Fisk into submission or shooting him in the face again, as she did at the end of Hawkeye, Maya performs something of a mind-meld on her adopted uncle.
The move forces him to relive his memories as a boy, listening to his father beat his mother. As Vincent D’Onofrio takes his giant baby approach to playing Fisk to its furthest extreme,...

Spoilers for "Echo" follow.
It wouldn't be a Marvel Studios production without a post-credits stinger. Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) limps back home to New York City. As fate would have it, the jet's television is playing a new broadcast about the NYC mayor's race, with the subhead "No Clear Frontrunner."
Fisk turns up the volume and hears a panelist recounting polls that show most NYC voters' "ideal candidate [is] somebody who is a fighter." The host adds, "There are legitimate problems in the city right now — the voters want somebody who understands the pain they're going through," and the panelist replies, "A bare-knuckled brawler would do well in this race, an outsider, somebody who is not afraid to take on the establishment." However, as they lament, no such candidate has emerged and the race is in its last legs.
This commentary plays over a slow zoom-in on Fisk's face,...

The following contains spoilers from the fifth and final episode of Echo Season 1, now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
Marvel fans have been starved for more details about the upcoming live-action Daredevil: Born Again series, which will see Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprise their roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, respectively. However, a mid-credits scene in Echo’s Season 1 finale — which closed out a five-episode binge drop Tuesday on Disney+ and Hulu — may have just given us an important clue about what’s to come.

It's not certain when there'll next be a new Spider-Man movie in theaters. 2023 gave us one of the best ones yet with "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse," but the sequel "Beyond The Spider-Verse" doesn't have a concrete release date. Tom Holland's live-action web-slinger is probably returning, but his fourth outing is currently in pre-production.
Fortunately, there are decades of great comics if you need your Spider-Man fix. If you keep up with superhero movies, you probably know how Marvel Studios started as an underdog and became a behemoth. The omnipresent Cinematic Universe all started with 2008's "Iron Man," which was far from a guaranteed hit; the title character was a B-list comic star at best, and comeback vehicles (like this was for Robert Downey Jr.) can be anything but.
According to the recent behind-the-scenes book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards, even the film's writers didn't initially know if it would work. Their concerns went back to the source material. The most famous "Iron Man" comic was and is "Demon in a Bottle", about Tony Stark succumbing to and then beating alcoholism.
During the Bronze Age of Comics (the 1970s), superhero stories gestured to social relevance. "The Reign of Marvel Studios" says that writers weren't keen on such a premise being a blockbuster hit,...

“I often wonder,” the Joker chides Batman, staring at his enemy through the haze of a post-apocalyptic desert. “How many alternate timelines do you destroy the world because, frankly, you don’t have the cojones to die yourself?”
For fans of the Snyderverse, that little tidbit from Zack Snyder’s Justice League felt like a cruel tease, a reference to multiversal adventures that would never actually arrive on screen. Most fans likely assumed that the original plan was for these stories to unfold in a Justice League sequel, possibly one pitting Batman against Superman and Darkseid to create the oft-glimpsed Knightmare reality.
But according to information from someone close to the project, some of those larger ideas about Batman would have been explored in the solo film that Ben Affleck was originally tapped to direct, write, and star in. Planned as a continuation of Snyder’s first set of Dceu films,...

Despite the cancellation of Netflix's "Daredevil" way back in 2018, Marvel Studios didn't let Ol' Hornhead slip through the cracks. Charlie Cox returned as Matt Murdock in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and we eventually saw him suit up as Daredevil in "She-Hulk." Meanwhile, Matt's arch-rival Wilson Fisk/the Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) appeared in "Hawkeye." These were all seeds that will finally sprout with "Daredevil: Born Again," set for release on Disney+ in 2024.
Keep in mind, this series is probably not going to be an adaptation of the eponymous Frank Miller/David Mazzucchelli comic story, mainly since season 3 of the Netflix series already covered that ground. Still, the title is too fitting to not use for a revival series (even if Cox insists "Born Again" will stand on its own). What direction will the story of "Born Again" take? If the writers pull from more recent comics, then Wilson Fisk may soon become Mayor Fisk.

DC Comics "Batman" #133, now available, is written by Chip Zdarsky and illustrated by Mike Hawthorne/Adriano Di Benedetto and Miguel Mendonca:
"...in this 'alternate universe' tale, 'Bruce Wayne' is stuck in a radical leftist 'Gotham' where he died long ago.
"With 'Catwoman' working against her will for 'Red Mask' and 'Harvey Dent' patrolling the streets as a sadistic 'Venom'-addicted judge...

When walking out of James Gunn's 2014 film "Guardians of the Galaxy," the 10th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this author heard several other audiences members talking about the film's post-credits stinger. In the epilogue, the vaguely villainous Collector (Benicio Del Toro) sat destitute among the ruins of his collection or rare cosmic antiquities. Only a few of his beloved baubles has survived a cosmic blast, including a dog from Earth. The dog, wearing a Soviet space suit, was clearly salvaged from the 1960s Russian space program wherein canines were sent up in rockets to test their safety. The dog in "Guardians" is not Laika, but a fictional dog named Cosmo. The Collector had been keeping it in a cage on a distant planet for decades.
As Cosmo gives the Collector a sympathetic lick, a voice from off-screen (Seth Green) immediately points out how gross the dog is. A...

"Daredevil: Born Again" is one of the most anticipated Marvel Studios projects. After guest appearances in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "She-Hulk," Charlie Cox is returning to Ol' Hornhead full-time — and it's not just him. Jon Bernthal will be returning as Frank Castle/The Punisher, reprising his role from both Netflix's "Daredevil" and its "Punisher" spin-off. It's unclear if Frank will be a friend or foe to Matt Murdock this time around.
Daredevil and Punisher is a long-standing rivalry; while Matt stands on the edge of a cliff, Frank has fallen far off it. Writers who've pitted the two against each other include Frank Miller, Garth Ennis (whose "Punisher" run was the basis for "Daredevil" season 2 episode "New York's Finest"), and most recently, Chip Zdarsky.
Zdarsky is the author of the ongoing run on "Daredevil," where his writing is complemented by Marco Checchetto's gorgeous art; his penciling uses...

Though many might only remember “Howard the Duck” as an infamous bomb from producer George Lucas, let’s not forget, it was also a Marvel movie — the first major one, in fact, since a Captain America serial in the 1940s. It starred “Back to the Future” legend Lea Thompson, and she’s still very much ready to do another one, this time as a director.
Appearing on “The Tonight Show” on Tuesday night as part of the show’s 80s-themed night, Thompson noted that “I’m actually the first Marvel queen” and revealed that she’s actually “been in” to Marvel to pitch another “Howard the Duck” movie.
“I’ve been in to pitch a ‘Howard the Duck’ movie with Chip Zdarsky, who did the comic book, the last run of the Howard the Duck comic book,” Thompson said. “He put me on the cover, and so we went in,...

The Silver Coin #12 Written by Stephanie Phillips | Art by Michael Walsh
February 1945 and the American Army are pushing through the Italian Alps clearing out some last vestiges of fanatical Nazi opposition. Pleading for mercy a dying German tries to trade a mysterious silver coin for his life. Private Hart the recipient of the coin wishes that he can overcome his fear of killing and be like his fellow GI’s who have no compunction in taking lives.
But as we know the coin has a way twisting its’ holders wishes and before long Hart is killing with impunity and neither Germans or his fellow Americans are safe from the coin’s curse!

I can’t remember the last time I reviewed a Daredevil book which, on the face of it, is unusual. Daredevil is one of my top three Marvel characters, and one I’ve been a huge fan of since the late 70’s/ early 80’s. That’s right, he existed pre-Frank Miller. Matt Murdock has always been a hugely interesting character to write, and for me the two personas are so different it is like writing two different characters. Daredevil is the swashbuckling defender of Hell’s Kitchen, Matt Murdock the lawyer who’ll defend anyone in need. Nearly as iconic as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Superman/ Clark Kent when you think of it. He is also as a character very adaptable, and most writers have a very personal take on him. This time round, Chip Zdarsky gets his shot.

This Batman article contains spoilers.
Writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Jorge Jimenez kick off a new era of Dark Knight comics with today’s Batman #125. The issue is the first part of their “Failsafe” arc, which Zdarsky described in his newsletter as “Batman’s Doomsday. It’s non-stop action and puts Batman in a very different place by the end of it.” The keyword here is “Doomsday,” which should set off alarm bells inside the heads of Batfans who were around in the ’90s when a villain of the same name killed Superman. Is this new dynamic duo starting their run on Batman by taking Bruce Wayne completely off the board?
Well, someone does meet their untimely end in this issue but it isn’t the Dark Knight.
First, some context: one of Batman’s oldest rogues is murdering Gotham City’s wealthiest citizens, but this isn’t the usual get-rich-quick scheme.

A new era begins for Batman and DC Comics in July. Comic Book has revealed that beloved Marvel writer Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez, one of the best artists working at DC Comics today, are teaming up as the new creative team of the main Batman series. Their run begins with Batman #125, an oversized issue that kicks off the “Failsafe” arc, which Zdarsky described in his newsletter as “Batman’s Doomsday. It’s non-stop action and puts Batman in a very different place by the end of it.”
According to Comic Book, “Failsafe” begins with Bruce suffering from nightmares of a future he thinks may come to pass, and he may not live long enough to stop it. The arc will feature a “startling enemy from Batman’s past” who intends to kill Batman once and for all.

So I’m a year late here: I was going to point out that this series took longer to complete than I expected, and so I was not as invested in this book as I could have been. But one whole year of the delay is on me, so mentioning that a comic that started in September 2013 and only ran thirty-one issues probably shouldn’t have taken seven years might not come across well.
Or maybe I’ll passive-aggressively say I’m not going to do that. Pointless passive-aggression is pretty on-brand for a discussion of Sex Criminals, right?
Anyway, Six Criminals is the sixth and last collection of the comic: it includes the final story arc and the fantabulous extra issue #69, in which two minor characters have a destination wedding a few years later and all of the surviving characters show up to celebrate and bounce off each other...

Oh look, it’s another ‘event’ book. Soon monthly books will probably cease to exist, considering how many of these event books both Marvel and DC pump out these days. Not a criticism, as publishers will just follow what the consumer wants. In the early days, mini-series were a nice side dish, a treat, to have alongside your monthly fix of Spider-Man or Batman. Now, monthly books seem very much secondary, with relatively low readership figures. Big event books, however, always get a readership bump, and therefore the publisher makes money, and everyone’s happy. The only problem for me with that model is you have to keep upping the ante with each mini-series, or finding some angle that’s not been explored, and that gets more difficult every year. Will this be the event that jumps the shark?...

Showcasing 11 horror comics from different artists with an emphasis on emotive textures and palpable palettes, the new horror comics anthology Shades of Fear is now on Kickstarter ahead of its September 2022 release, and we have a look at the amazing cover art by Maya McKibbin and release details for the ambitious anthology.
Here's what Shades of Fear contributor Jade Zhang had to say about her story, "How to Survive a Haunting":
"My vision for “How to Survive a Haunting” is to make it a bit of a love tribute to the classic tropes of horror. A decadent and macabre old house, a creepy baby, and a healthy smattering of body horror. I drew inspiration from Junji Ito’s "Glyceride," and the feelings of pure revulsion I'd get from that short. The haunted house is cruel and monstrous, it feeds off of the flesh and fear of the people living in it.

If you want to know what the future of the MCU looks like, just look at what Marvel Comics is publishing right now. As a general rule, whatever is being prioritized in Marvel’s publishing wing is usually a good indicator of which way the wind is blowing for their Marvel Studios counterparts over the next few years. Sometimes this takes the form of which storylines are suddenly being reprinted in prestigious collected editions, while others it’s about the launch of new series which position old characters, titles, and trademarks in prominent ways. Whether it’s Sam Wilson becoming Captain America or Jane Foster becoming Thor, the Marvel Comics events of today are often the MCU milestones of tomorrow.
And Marvel isn’t messing around with big event stories right now, announcing a whopping eight titles that all should feel very familiar to fans who enjoy speculation about the next evolution of the MCU.

In a surprising addition to the superhero discourse this week, fans have been taking to Twitter and other social media platforms in an effort to offer their two cents when it comes (or not) to whether Batman and other heroes perform cunnilingus.
How did this happen? Well, it all started with a fairly straightforward interview about how successful TV series like WandaVision, The Umbrella Academy, and Harley Quinn subvert the superhero genre – one that happened to produce an irresistible nugget of DC info that the internet is still very much feasting on at the time of writing.
Obviously it’s an interviewer’s dream when the person you’re quizzing dishes up some behind the scenes secrets about the making of their art, but Harley Quinn co-creator Justin Halpern probably wasn’t expecting the widespread social media reaction to this new interview,...

This is a book that has launched at the perfect time. Why? Firstly, it’s essentially a ‘What If?’ story, just one extended over 4 issues. Nothing wrong with that if there’s enough story in there. Secondly, Marvel are fast catching up with DC with their focus on multiverses and alternate versions of characters. They’ve always had a little nibble at that aspect of comics mythology, the Ultimate line for one, but with upcoming film projects going in that direction synergy is in the air. So, it makes sense for the first in a series of these stories to start with everybody’s favourite everyman, Spider-Man, and popular villain Venom. Let’s go all the way back to 1985….

The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has always liked to tease that the real cause of the zombie outbreak in his long-running comic series was extraterrestrial in nature. Back in January 2020, Kirkman responded to a question on Twitter as to the zombie outbreak’s origin with a simple “space spore.”
This was a joke, of course, but it was also a stealthy shout out to what The Walking Dead could have been.
Kirkman originally developed The Walking Dead as a Night of the Living Dead comic. But when Image Comics encouraged him to develop his own idea so that he could control the IP, Kirkman concocted a “Plan 9 From Outer Space-esque tale of how the zombies were actually animated by an alien race that was preparing to invade Earth by disrupting its infrastructure.”
