Bloody Disgusting has been provided with a first look snippet from the upcoming indie genre movie Spirit Riser this afternoon, giving us a taste of a completely unrecognizable Whitney Moore as the film’s “Man from the Dark and Lonely Place.”
Directed by Dylan Mars Greenberg, Spirit Riser is said to be a “genre-bending fantasy with elements of horror, comedy, action, surrealism, and martial arts.”
Check out the exclusive first look clip below.
Spirit Riser features a cast that also includes Lynn Lowry, Amanda Flowers, and Kansas Bowling. And the film is narrated by Michael Madsen (The Hateful Eight).
The press release previews, “Under the skilled hands of makeup experts Edwin Monzon and Cici Andersen, Moore underwent a radical transformation using prosthetics that turned her into the terrifying, gaunt-faced male character central to the film’s enigmatic narrative.”

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just arrived online, and in this one we’re looking back at a movie that was just released last year, writer/director Joe Begos‘s holiday horror film Christmas Bloody Christmas – which got an 8/10 review from our own JimmyO that you can read Here and is available to watch on the Shudder streaming service. To find out what we had to say about Christmas Bloody Christmas one year after its release, check out the video embedded above!
Christmas Bloody Christmas has the following synopsis: It’s Christmas Eve and fiery record store owner Tori Tooms just wants to get drunk and party, until the robotic Santa Claus at a nearby toy store goes haywire and makes her night more than a little complicated. Santa Claus begins a rampant killing spree through the neon-drenched snowscape against a backdrop of drugs, sex, metal and violence,...

With Halloween now just days away, America’s thoughts turn increasingly to witches, demons, the paranormal and scaring the heck out of ourselves. And of course, few things accomplish this goal better than horror movies, a genre the United States has largely claimed as its own. To get everyone in the spirit, the website bank-locations.net launched a state-by-state study of Google to discern (based on searches) which Halloween-themed flicks were most popular in each state of the union.
To generate its conclusions, the research team analyzed 200+ top-rated horror films from IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, then studied specific searches for each movie. For example, for “The Shining,” they gathered keywords like “watch the shining,” “the shining full movie,” “”the shining streaming, “The shining netflix” and “where to watch the shining.”
Horror movies were split into two groups: those before 2000 and those after. More than half of the states (27) preferred Googling...

Ever the optimist, Jimmy Fallon tried to make Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell feel better after a recent Morning Consult poll revealed he is the least popular senator in the country, carrying an approval rating of just 28%.
In the Friday night bit, the “Tonight Show” host on NBC pulled together several fake quotes from other U.S. senators offering “words of encouragement” for McConnell — but really they just served to insult a handful of senators instead of just one.
Fallon’s writing team had each senator let McConnell know it could always be worse, revealing their own issues with feedback from their constituents. Be sure to check out the video above, as many of the hilarious digs are based on the politicians’ looks.

While Violent Night is lighting the box office on fire, there’s another film featuring a Santa with a bit of bloodlust: Christmas Bloody Christmas. Thankfully this Santa is much less friendly and a lot more homicidal. I was fortunate enough to talk with the writer/director, Joe Begos, and pick his brain on this wonderful little title. He talks about how it started as a Silent Night, Deadly Night remake, only to evolve into a killer robot Santa film. This is probably my favorite conversation yet, so don’t miss it!

Many fans of “The View” definitely haven’t missed Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and they made that clear with her return to the show on Wednesday. As she spent most of the show shaming abortion rights activists, viewers were vocal in their contempt for her on social media.
To kick off the show, the panel discussed Tuesday’s primary in Kansas, in which voters overwhelmingly rejected efforts to remove the right to an abortion from the state constitution. While most of the panel celebrated, Haselbeck did not, claiming that “just because something is a right, doesn’t make it right.”

She then proceeded to continually cite her religious beliefs on the matter – arguing that abortion is wrong “according to god” – while simultaneously claiming that she doesn’t force her religion onto others.

“Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski and Willie Geist dove right in Wednesday morning to discuss the vote in Kansas rejecting an amendment that would restrict abortion across the state.
In a landslide vote on the so-called “Value Them Both Amendment,” which would remove the right to abortion from the state’s constitution, the traditionally pro-life, right-leaning Kansas electorate drew a line in the sand. Scarborough noted that high-profile abortion cases like that of the 10-year-old rape victim and “the Texas Attorney General fighting for the right to let mothers die on the operating table” bolstered awareness that “this is the Republican party 2022” – and that many conservative voters don’t want to align themselves with it.
“Kansas voters, even people who are pro-life said, ‘No. We’re not going in that radical, freakish direction,'” Scarborough said.

Robby Steinhardt, the violinist, co-founder and co-lead vocalist of the rock band Kansas, died Saturday several months after seeming to recover from acute septic shock at a Tampa hospital following a case of pancreatitis. He was 71.
His death was announced by both his wife, Cindy Steinhardt, and the band. According to Cindy Steinhardt, the musician suffered pancreatitis in May and was placed on life support following acute septic shock. Although he recovered and was about to be released from medical care, he suffered another bout with sepsis.
In a statement today, the band wrote: “The members of the band Kansas, past and present, wish to express our deepest sorrow over the death of our bandmate and friend, Robby Steinhardt. Bart Simpson is facing some unexpected competition.
NBC announced Friday that this Sunday’s Afc Divisional playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs is shifting from early afternoon to primetime, with kickoff now scheduled for 8:20/7:20c. The anticipated matchup was moved due to “a forecasted storm for the Kansas City area this weekend,” the network said in a statement.
As a result of the scheduling tweak, a rerun of Celebrity Apprentice and an all-new Dateline have been bumped. The game will now air opposite The Simpsons‘ highly publicized first-ever hour-long episode.

In my early days on the beat, NBC had an ad campaign encouraging people to watch summer reruns, promising, "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you!" In the age of Peak TV, that slogan seems less cynical than accurate. The rise of streaming services has put the bulk of TV history only a click or two away, which means that people are constantly discovering The Wire, or Arrested Development, or Terriers (sigh) for the very first time. In lieu of a summer rewind this year, I wanted to offer up primers of shows you can stream, whether an older series available in full(*) or something current you can catch up on before its next season begins. So far, I've done a pair of current shows in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Halt and Catch Fire, and wanted to shift gears this week to do a completed series. (*) Note: with these picks,...

A review of the "Fargo" season 2 finale coming up just as soon as I decree no more schnitzel or strudel... "People are dead, Peggy." -Lou A palindrome, as you know, is a word or phrase that's the same backwards and forwards: "Madam, I'm Adam," or "Mom," or "A man, a plan, a canal: Panama!" Many of the players we met over the course of this season of "Fargo" don't seem particularly palindromic. They start as one thing, and end as something else entirely, and their journey looks radically different when viewed start to finish rather than finish to start. But then there is Lou Solverson, who is palindromic in character if not in name. He is the same at this tale's end as he was at the beginning, and as he will be 27 years in the future (when his facial features will be significantly different), and likely as he was...

The actor attempts to beat a bizarre sports record in Ferrell Takes the Field. But is he being serious or is he adding another layer to the fake documentary genre?
It’s hard to know exactly what to think of Will Ferrell’s latest project, Ferrell Takes the Field. The documentary, which airs on HBO this Saturday, 12 September at 10pm Est, follows the Anchorman star as he plays 10 different positions for 10 different major league baseball teams in one day. He tries to best the record of Bert “Campy” Campaneris, who played all nine positions on the field in 1965 in a game for the Kansas City Athletics. Ferrell plays every position and third base coach, just because there’s no other slot for him on the field other than umpire, bat boy or maybe a streaker taking advantage of the seventh-inning stretch.

New York (AP) - Elaine Stritch, the brash theater performer whose gravelly, gin-laced voice and impeccable comic timing made her a Broadway legend, has died. She was 89.
Joseph Rosenthal, Stritch's longtime attorney, said the actress died Thursday of natural causes at her home in Birmingham, Michigan.
Although Stritch appeared in movies and on television, garnering three Emmys and finding new fans as Alec Baldwin's unforgiving mother on "30 Rock," she was best known for her stage work, particularly in her candid one-woman memoir, "Elaine Stritch: At Liberty," and in the Stephen Sondheim musical "Company."
A tart-tongued monument to New York show business endurance, Stritch worked well into her late 80s, most recently as Madame Armfeldt in a revival of Sondheim's musical "A Little Night Music." She replaced Angela Lansbury in 2010 to critical acclaim.

TV’s Music Editors – much like a teenage boy making a desperate mix tape – often spend hours scouring music catalogs to find that perfect song to pull together a scene on a television show. Whether it’s a series finale or that famous bassline from Seinfeld, the audience has been programmed to listen to the background noise and music can be the added touch that makes or destroys a sequence on a television show.
Like a song on the radio during your first kiss, music has the ability to carry through emotions and images, even several years into our futures. Dinner can be entirely ruined when the person at the table next to you has a teenage daughter that can’t stop singing Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus. Music sets the mood and fleshes out emotions for an otherwise flat image.

Flickering lights and shadowy apparitions mean only one thing in Sam and Dean’s line of work: the bunker is haunted. The place is warded like crazy, so it would have to be haunted by someone who died inside the bunker. Since Dean and Sam have been there, that has only been one person: Kevin. They pretty much just have to wait until Kevin figures out how to break through the veil and speak to them.
When he finally figures it out, it is like he is answering Dean’s heartfelt apologies and professions of guilt for his death. He appears, flickering, still getting the hang of this “being dead” stuff. Dean is surprised that he isn’t in heaven, but Kevin reminds them: “Heaven is closed for business.” He and a zillion...

Won’t someone save cable news? It’s not just that ratings are down across the board for the Big Three 24-hour networks — although 2013 was unquestionably a bad year for everyone. Far more damaging, I think, is the fact that cable news as an aesthetic — as a compelling method for exploring the important topics of our modern era — has entered what feels like a late-decadent period. The typical news anchor on CNN or MSNBC or Fox News floats across a set built out of touchscreen walls and occasional chat-friendly desks: It’s like all of cable news takes place in...

Stars: Clancy Brown, Anne Heche, Rebekah Brandes, Ethan Peck, James Tupper, Jennifer Stone | Written byJonathan W.C. Mills | Directed by Anthony Leonardi III
Nothing Left to Fear is the first terrific terror tale from Slasher Films (founded by Guns N’ Roses rock legend/horror nut Slash), directed by Gore Verbinski’s visionary protégé Anthony Leonardi III. The film stars James Tupper and Anne Heche as the new pastor and his wife who arrive in Stull, Kansas, with their three kids hoping for an idyllic country life. At first the town and its people look like being the answer to their prayers, but then the supposedly retiring pastor Clancy Brown puts into motion an ancient ritual that unleashes a demonic fury. For Stull is one of the seven gateways to Hell and its inhabitants must quell the Beast who rises to walk the Earth at all bloody costs.

Here's something that could reinvigorate the movie theaters industry a little bit. Today, Paramount Pictures and the Alamo Drafthouse have announced a partnership in conjunction with the theatrical release of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, which is already in theaters. The two companies have joined forces to introduce the Anchorfan Pass, a special edition movie pass to see unlimited showings of the comedy sequel starring Will Ferrell. Going on sale today, the Anchorfan Pass costs $15 and will allow audiences to see the movie whenever they want to, as many times as they want to, beginning January 1st. Since only the Alamo Drafthouse is offering this ticket, it's only available at their Austin, Texas; Kalamazoo, Michigan; Houston, Texas; San Antonio, Texas; Winchester, Va; Kansas City, Missouri; Denver, Colorado; Ashburn, Va; Yonkers, New York and New Braunfels, Texas locations. However, this seems like a damn good idea for bigger theater chains to try out.

Where aren’t you Hugh? TNT has announced that its annual Christmas in Washington special will be hosted by Hugh Jackman. The holiday concert special will air on December 20th at 8:00 p.m. (Et/Pt), and will feature some very special performers, including: Anna Kendrick, Sheryl Crow, Backstreet Boys, and more.
This has long been one of my favorite holiday traditions, and has offered up some of the most entertaining performers, and all-around enjoyable evenings for years.
That tradition continues (well, quite frankly, I’m not a fan of Backstreet Boys) this year with not only some great performances, but you can’t go wrong with Hugh Jackman running your show, whatever it is. Right? I can’t wait for Sheryl Crow, Anna Kendrick is a surprisingly awesome singer, and you don’t want to miss Pat Monahan.
Catch all the info below, and let me know if you’ll be tuning in.

Dramas’ strong fall continued last night with the debut of Fox’s Almost Human. Boosted by NFL overrun on the East Coast but facing a highly rated Sunday Night Football game on NBC, Almost Human drew a 3.1 in adults 18-49 and 9.1 million viewers. It follows the strong fall debuts of ABC’s Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. (4.6 in fast nationals), NBC’s The Blacklist (3.8) and Fox’s Sleepy Hollow (3.4). Fox is on somewhat of a drama streak with three consecutive solid launches: The Following (3.1) last January, Sleepy Hollow and now Almost Human, which will be paired with Sleepy Hollow starting tonight. Fox’s abbreviated 9-10 Pm Sunday animated comedy block featured veterans The Simpsons (1.8, even with last week when it aired at 8 Pm) and Family Guy, (2.2), which benefited from the stronger lead-in, up 10%. NBC is set to win Sunday night in all key measures with the Kansas City Chiefs-Denver Broncos game,...

Fast National ratings for Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013
The debut of "Almost Human" on Fox Sunday drew decent numbers, but it also lost a good amount of its NFL lead-in and dropped off some in its second half. Still, it ranks among the better drama premieres of the fall, and Fox says it was the highest-rated entertainment program of the night among women 18-49.
Also Sunday, a highly anticipated "Sunday Night Football" matchup between Kansas City and Denver drew big numbers for NBC. "The Mentalist" had its biggest total audience since its season premiere, and "Revenge" and "Betrayal" were up a little bit for ABC. "Once Upon a Time," however, took a little bit of a hit.
NBC scored 20.8 million viewers and an 11.9 rating/18 share in households for the night, double the 10.4 million and 6.0/9 for second-place Fox. (Both networks' numbers will be adjusted for live broadcasts.) CBS (10 million, 6.3/10) came in third, and ABC (5.6 million,...

From Anchorman to This is 40, Paul Rudd has become the ultimate straight guy – and we all adore him for it. So what's he doing in a dark film based on an Icelandic movie? Sasha Frere-Jones joins him in New York to find out
When I go to meet Paul Rudd at a low-key restaurant in Tribeca, I am early. A busboy is dragging a marble-topped table out the door while arguing with a tall and elegant woman. I circle the block and return, only to enter several paces behind Rudd. The woman turns out to be the owner. Whoever hoisted the table is gone, fired moments before.
"And he was shouting! It is 11am and he is drunk! Paul, would you have defended me?" she asks in mock distress. Smiling his "I know what you mean" smile, Rudd nods: "I would have had your back." "Thank you, Paul," the owner says,...

"Acn is able to project Mitt Romney will win the great state of Kansas ... "
Anchorman Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) and his cable news network were right in the thick of the action as "Election Night, Part II," the Aaron Sorkin-written finale of Season 2 of HBO's "The Newsroom," began Sunday (Sept. 15). And as with the previous week's "Part I," there was just as much activity off-camera.
Don (Thomas Sadoski) was working to nail down the tip he'd gotten that Gen. David Petraeus was about to resign. Charlie (Sam Waterston) was debating whether to go with that or with the story about a congressman that had yielded the Petraeus tip, as an intended trade-off.
Don lobbied strongly for the Petraeus story, which Acn would run before anyone else and which he believed would "earn us back some credibility and goodwill" in the wake of the Operation Genoa debacle. In the end,...

"Man of Steel" may only be a few days away, but for us it feels like an eternity. Last week, we sat down with director Zack Snyder and discussed a few "Justice League" Easter eggs that may or may not be popping up in "Man of Steel."
With the immense success of "Marvel's the Avengers" over at Marvel Studios, DC and Warner Bros. have been pretty hard-pressed as of late to assemble their answer to Earth's Mightiest Heroes: a "Justice League" movie. It's been said that "Man of Steel" could be the first step in a new wave of DC films all taking place in the same universe, with the exception of Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy. That being said, here's a list of some potential "Justice League" Easter eggs to keep an eye out for.

It's hard to believe that 25 years have passed since the debut of China Beach, in which Emmy winner Dana Delany made a huge impact on the small screen as Army nurse Colleen McMurphy, a complicated character experiencing the physical and emotional horrors of the Vietnam War firsthand and elbow deep. With the complete series now available in a DVD box set just in time for its silver anniversary, Dana takes a stroll down memory lane with ETonline to talk about the show's impact, how the defining role that initially daunted her eventually changed her life -- and how she almost lost the part to Helen Hunt.

"The part was originally written [as a] Midwestern girl and she had blonde hair – I think 'the color of wheat' was the description of it, because she was from Kansas -- and I didn’t look like that," says Dana. "I certainly looked wholesome, and I think...

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine out Thursday, there's extensive coverage on the upcoming Superman film, Man of Steel. In conversations with director Zack Snyder a few details were revealed about the confrontation between Superman and the forces of General Zod that takes place in Smallville, Kansas. "It's a Western face-off. [Zod and Faora and the rest of the Kryptonian invasion] care very little for Smallville's iconographic status. We're being really hard on the town: this battle needed to be dangerous." Highlights Shooting the battle took nine days. The mayor of Plano, Illinois (which served as Smallville) makes a cameo. The town gets absolutely devastated. The battle is the first major conflict in the film. Keep your eyes peeled for what's described as an 'oh-my-god' cameo from someone playing a bank teller. Back in 2011, the Economist published a map of the Us matching each state with a national economy of similar size. It threw up some eyeopening similarities – Mississippi with Bangladesh, Texas with Russia, California with Italy – with the overall result of making the States seem like a much more familiar and approachable place. But if you were travelling to the Us for the first time, as a travel guide this approach has its limitations. Thinking that Nevada is just like Peru, or that Minnesota celebrates the same cultural traditions as Thailand is only going to lead to confusion (and possibly a jail sentence). But substitute dry financial information with the rich sociological material of TV shows and the result is way more helpful.
And from this you can easily derive this handy list of Top Travel Tips:
1) The Following are everywhere
2) If you want to buy drugs, Maryland and New Mexico should be on your itinerary.

Avengers Initiative: Kansas edition a.k.a. The Wannabe Hunters
We open with a pair of adolescents making out in a car, on a deserted road in Conway Springs, Kansas. Turns out, the girl is Krissy Chambers, the obnoxious teen who “helped” Dean take down a couple of Vetalas, a while back.
A few minutes later, a blue van pulls up near the car, and we get the stereotypical “who’s there?” moment when a random shadow passes by the car a few times. At first the boyfriend, Aiden, tries to start the car, but as I said, “typical moment”... and the car won’t start. The boyfriend waits a couple of heartbeats, then makes a run for it, leaving her pleading ass behind.
The shadow, a young man, breaks the passenger side window and grabs her, yanking her out of the opening... And just as I’m about to...

Supernatural Episode 818
“Freaks and Geeks”
Written By: Adam Glass
Directed By: John F. Showalter
Original Airdate: 27 March 2013
In This Episode...
We are in Kansas. A couple kids are making out in a car when they hear something. The boy, Aidan, goes to check on it while the girl, Chrissie, waits in the car. Suddenly the window is broken in and she is dragged out. Aidan decapitates her vampire attacker swiftly.
Sam and Dean roll into town, suspecting that vampires might be at play here. They are right, but they come across something far stranger: a trio of child hunters. Well, teenage hunters. One of them is Chrissie, whose dad is a hunter, and someone Dean knew from a few years ago. Well, I should say was a hunter - he was killed by vampires. So was Aidan’s family, and Josephine’s (the third of their trio). The three of them,...

Paul Rudd has had two movie careers. Chances are, you remember his first: it's the one that started with "Clueless" and ended with the release of "Anchorman" in 2004. Like the rest of society, however, you have somehow repressed that career in favor of the one Rudd has now, where he often stars as the affable and lovable funnyman. (There's no sarcasm in that last sentence: We do love Paul Rudd.) What's interesting, though, is to listen to Rudd discuss that first run, as he does here, before "Anchorman" changed everything. Think of it this way: Paul Rudd was in "The Cider House Rules."
Before we get to that, however, there's this: Rudd stars in this week's new comedy, "Admission." When I met Rudd at his Midtown Manhattan hotel, it was in the middle of a New York City snowstorm and that kind of threw his press day into a bit of a disarray.

Supernatural Episode 813
“Everybody Hates Hitler”
Written By: Ben Edlund
Directed By: Phil Sgriccia
Original Airdate: 6 February 2013
In This Episode...
The ornate box Sam and Dean got from Henry holds a key. The key opens the former headquarters for the Men of Letters in Kansas. Despite not having been used in at least 60 years, it is clean and still has power and running water. The huge art deco headquarters was clearly the Men of Letters nerve center: Ham radio, full library, weapons, mini fridge. The boys settle in. They are there for about two weeks before they get a case.
An old rabbi named Isaac Bass spontaneously combusts in a college pub in Pennsylvania. Sam found his info in one of the Letters’ files. He was part of a team of rabbis that were “hardcore saboteurs” during WWII. The guys head to Pennsylvania and split up. Sam goes to the library...

I’ll admit it; when I saw the preview for this week’s episode of Supernatural, after last week’s stellar (but not perfect) outing, I thought to myself, “Well, that doesn’t look good.” I couldn’t have been more wrong. There was a lot to love in an episode full of history, action, and some awkward gay flirting. Here are my five favorite bits, in no particular order, because my brain doesn’t work in any logical way.
1. The introduction to the episode.
True story: history was always my favorite subject in school. I was good at memorization and learning about the past always fascinated me, so for me, the intro to this episode had nerdgasm written all over it.

In This Episode...
We start in 1958 in Normal, Illinois. A man named Henry says goodnight to his son before he heads to “work.” Work is actually a secret magical society into which he is about to be inducted. His friend, Josie, is called in for her induction first. Screams, and the sounds of a struggle draw Henry into the ceremony room. Several elders are dead, and Josie is clearly possessed by a demon. With his dying breath, one of the elders presses a box into Henry’s hand and begs him to protect it. Henry races into another room and casts a blood sigil. It is supposed to connect blood to blood and bring him back to his son. Instead, it shoots him into 2013, right into Sam and Dean’s motel room.

Please allow me to spoil you right from the beginning and not make you wait for the verdict. This was easily, far and away, my favorite episode this season. There! I said it! In a season plagued with flaws like less than stellar characterization, retreading of old ground, and the boys sharing minimal screen time together during most episodes, this was a very welcome return to form that addressed most complaints in the fandom this season. Odd List Mark Williams Jan 2, 2013
From superheroes in disguise to vain news anchors, Mark celebrates 12 particularly fine movie journalists...
With the news that Clark Kent has quit his job at the Daily Planet because of its preference for soft entertainment stories, the world of fictional journalism was rocked to its foundations. After all, he's been there since the Superman comics began in the 1940s, despite the lack of career progress. But, it seems the Man of Steel's civilian day-job has lost its appeal, and now he's going into business on his own.
Journalism is a topic that raises its head in films regularly across the genres, and it has provided some fine, and not so fine, examples of the hardy reporter, always on the lookout for the next scoop. Oftentimes, there is the route of the truth or the route of the fast buck, with the majority of those...
