Rolling Stone‘s interview series King for a Day features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and singers who had the difficult job of fronting major rock bands after the departure of an iconic vocalist. Some of them stayed in their bands for years, while others lasted just a few months. In the end, however, they all found out that replacement singers can themselves be replaced. This edition features former Genesis singer Ray Wilson.

Ever since he was a hypersyllabic, top-hat-clad emo-pop upstart in the mid-2000s, Brendon Urie has always been about the grand gesture. His project Panic! At the Disco, which began as a band with his childhood friends and has evolved into a solo venture, has trafficked in big moves, whether it’s following up Trl success with knotty baroque pop as it did on 2008’s Pretty. The 70s singer who served up stadium power chords as much as gentle, reflective songs is remembered in this sad, sweet trip down memory lane
Phil Lynott was lead singer and bass guitarist of the 70s rock band Thin Lizzy, and is the star of this moderately interesting but very respectful and sometimes oddly incurious documentary. There are entertaining interviews with people who knew Lynott and worked with him – and some who just admired him. In this category, I think, comes U2’s Adam Clayton, who is interesting on what fame on that level gives you and what it takes out of you. Clayton sounds like a soft-spoken clergyman or Oxbridge academic.
Oddly, there is little or no footage of Lynott being interviewed on TV (except for moments when he has to correct American interviewers who called him “English”), although there is some audio material. Was it a copyright problem?...

The Irish have put up with a lot of bullshit over the years. There’s England. The Troubles. The kittening of the Celtic Tiger. Enya. It’s not been an easy history. And black people, those living in mostly white countries anyway, they’ve put up with a whole bunch of bullshit, too. So if we pretend there’s an iota of depressing truth being bandied about when, in Roddy Doyle’s novel The Commitments, the irrepressible yet wee bit naïve protagonist Jimmy says that the Irish are the blacks of Europe,...

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, let us raise a dirty glass to the spirit of Irish music, wherever in the world it shows up. And like the Irish people themselves, Irish music shows up everywhere, usually a few moments after the bottles get opened. There’s always been plenty of great music on the island, but the really staggering part (apart from all the staggering) is how far that music travels, following the immigrant experience.

“As I’m about to turn 80, I’d like to think I’ve become wise in some ways,” Tina Turner just told Rolling Stone. But there’s never been a revival like Tina’s Eighties comeback. She became a solo superstar when she was 44. Things like that just don’t happen. (For context: That’s how old Lauryn Hill, Andre 3000, Mark Ronson, and Jack White are now.)

None of it happened the easy way. Tina’s always been a fighter, because she had to be.

Thin Lizzy’s songs typically addressed badass rock & roll topics like bar fights, jailbreaks and medieval battles. But on Black Rose: A Rock Legend — their ninth LP, released 40 years ago today — the band paid tribute to their Irish homeland with a highly unusual and weirdly touching album-closing epic.
“Tell me the legends of long ago,” Phil Lynott sings over a rolling, waltz-time riff at the beginning of “Róisín Dubh (Black Rose): A Rock Legend,” named for an old Irish song that addresses the country as though it were a lover.

I thought it was hilarious when Peter Quill was given the Zune at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. There's no doubt that it will play an important role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 because it's going to be packed full of music. James Gun has already said he has 181 songs that he wants to use. It'll be interesting to see how he might utilize that many songs in a movie.
Today we have a deleted scene from the movie that features Quill and Kraglin trying to figure out how to work the Zune. After Kraglin gives the Zune to Peter to replace the Walkman that Ego broke, Peter asks him how to use it. So, Kraglin shows him how to scroll through the songs, and in the process offers some commentary about how it was made by a “primitive people." He then proceeds to point...

In the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films, Chris Pratt's character, Peter "Star-Lord" Quill, was emotionally sustained by some 1980s mix-tapes given to him by his late mother. At the end of Vol. 2, he's given a Zune as a gift, which really opens up the possible songs on the third film's soundtrack!
While the joke in the theatrical release of the movie was just how funny it is that anyone would be excited for a Zune, a never-before-seen deleted scene shows Quill hilariously discovering songs and artists he'd never heard of before getting kidnapped from Earth in the late '80s.

“Did you hear what happened to Baroness?”
That was the portentous question that got passed around the mostly insular heavy metal community in August 2012. After all, the group had just released Yellow & Green, a double-album (and the group’s third full-length) to nearly universal acclaim barely a month earlier.
It should have been their breakthrough. Baroness were one of a breed of bands operating in the thorny haze of post-2000s metal that wasn’t quite thrash, wasn’t quite nü-metal (thankfully), and wasn’t quite punk, but a postmodern hybrid of virtually every form of heavy music from the...

If Michael Fassbender can’t actually play the guitar, he sure can fake it. The “Assassin’s Creed” star joined Jimmy Fallon Tuesday for an Air Guitar Battle, which had no actual loser. Clearly, however, Fassbender won Round 1 with a kick-ass version of Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train.” (Ok, as much as fake guitar playing can kick ass.) Fallon had opted for Thin Lizzy to start the show. No one complained. Disney Xd's upcoming animated series take on Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" is set owe even more to last year's hit film as the show is set to get its own licensed soundtrack 1970s hits with the "Cosmic Mix Volume One".
The soundtrack will feature in the series itself and will be available to purchase physically and digitally from October 16th. No doubt the studio is keen for this to be even half as successful as the film's "Awesome Mix Volue One" was.
The track list is as follows, and unsurprisingly there's already already YouTube playlists of all the songs on the Cosmic Mix:

"Funk No. 49" – The James Gang
"Drift Away" – Dobie Gray
"Walk Away" – The James Gang
"Boys Are Back in Town" – Thin Lizzy

Ron Howard's 70s-set formula one thriller about the rivalry between drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda is supercharged fun, even if it may not depict the era with total accuracy

Formula One champion James Hunt smoked, drank and reportedly slept with 5,000 women. The legend has been printed. Rush, Ron Howard's gloriously fun biopic about the hotheaded rivalry between McLaren's English playboy and the austere, Ferrari-driving Austrian Niki Lauda, colours it in and has it enamelled.
Writer Peter Morgan (re-teaming with Howard after Frost/Nixon) presents a rollicking tale of lunatics and dreamers. Of men aiming for excellence in an era when a death toll of two or three drivers per year was part of the sport. He celebrates the divine, selfish pursuit of glory, and falls deeply in love with the gung-ho derring-do of...

I was very much in two minds about this project. I’m a huge fan of the original and it forms a real bridge back to my youth. A very unique album and something I felt no attempt to duplicate or “reinvent”, “reimagine” or whatever buzzword they’re using this month, should be made. It’s perfect as it is, I said, leave it alone. But then I began thinking about it another way. Would it not be great, not only for a whole new generation (pun intended) of fans to gain access to Jeff Wayne’s music, and perhaps even begin to appreciate the novel, but for the project to open up and speak to me in new ways, ways I had perhaps never considered? Seems this was Wayne’s intent when he decided to tackle this.

In 1970, the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath released a song called Iron Man.

Many people will be surprised when they realise that Snow Patrol have been around since 1994 (although they were known previously as Shrug and Polar Bear, and changed their name to Snow Patrol in 1997) and have released six studio recordings. Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham has hinted that the Irish rock band may head back into the recording studio this year for the first time in 28 years. The band's original frontman Phil Lynott died in 1986, three years after the release of their last album Thunder And Lightning, since which the band has continued under various lineups but failed to release any new material. "That's the number one question we're getting from people, are you going to record some new material?" Gorham told Billboard, regarding the band's current lineup. "The fans seem to trust this lineup, and I don't blame them." Gorham admitted that although nothing is set in stone, the band are the closest that they have (more)...

London — Bandmates say rock guitarist Gary Moore, a former member of influential Irish band Thin Lizzy, has died. He was 58.
Manager Adam Parsons told the BBC that Moore was found dead Sunday at a hotel on Spain's Costa del Sol, where he was on holiday. The cause of death was not immediately known.
Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey said Moore's death was a "total shock," and guitarist Scott Gorham said he was "a great player and a great guy."
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1952, Moore was a member of Dublin band Skid Row before joining Thin Lizzy in 1973, playing on tracks for the "Nightlife" album. He left after four months, but rejoined four years later and played on the band's "Black Rose" album before going solo once again.
He had a successful solo career, and his accomplished, bluesy playing won plaudits from other musicians.

Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore was found dead in a hotel room in Southern Spain, according to London newspaper The Guardian. The cause of death has not been determined. Moore was 58. The Belfast-native Moore joined the blues-rock-enthused Thin Lizzy in 1973, replacing Eric Bell on guitar, and enduring an up-and-down relationship with band frontman Phil Lynott for decades to come. Moore, who released 20 solo studio albums, had returned to his blues roots in recent years and played in 2006 with former bandmates from Thin Lizzy, according to the Guaridan. Said Bell: "He...

Born Robert William Gary Moore in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on April 4, 1952, Moore was a prolific guitar player. Since the late 1960s, Moore contributed to many musical projects and had three spells as lead guitarist in rock band Thin Lizzy playing on their classic album, Black Rose.
Known to many as an exceptional rock guitarist and most famous for his 1979 hit “Parisienne Walkways,” Moore was also a highly respected and talented blues player. Much of his twenty-plus catalogue of solo studio albums and live albums reflect this.

Spoiler alert! Your enjoyment of the online discussion about Peter Bradshaw's review of Biutiful may be compromised if you read on. And, some readers said, your enjoyment of the film might have been compromised if you read his review: particularly his revelation of "an unexpected moment: a real coup" during the movie (let us not describe the exact nature of the coup). "You have just spoiled a major dramatic moment in the movie," siforcat sighed. "Unexpected? Not for anyone who reads this who hasn't seen the film yet, it isn't," added stevekain. So, Bradshaw, defend yourself. "I don't think it is a spoiler," Peter says. "But there is an ongoing debate about how a critic is expected to engage with narrative and to talk about the things he/she genuinely – and in this case passionately – believes are centrally important to the movie.

Def Leppard star Joe Elliott is in talks with the founding members of Thin Lizzy to re-record the late Phil Lynott's vocals for a new project. Guitarist Scott Gorham insists he's keen to remaster and remix two or three of the band's classic albums and he wants Elliott to join the band for the sessions.
He tells Guitarist magazine, "I've been talking to the guys (executives) at Universal (about a) deluxe album where you get the original (album) remastered and the second disc will either be the whole album remixed or tracks cherry-picked off for that treatment."
"I'm actually talking to Joe Elliott about going into his studio and doing it there in Dublin. We've been talking about that for a few years and now Universal is on board; it's now a matter of finalizing all the costs to do it."
"We want to get in this year and start the remixes.
