Nearly eight years have passed since writer/director Jason Lei Howden announced that he would be making a sequel to his feature directorial debut Deathgasm (watch it Here). In that time, Howden has made Guns Akimbo and set up a film and comic book project called Monsters of Metal… and now he’s finally getting ready to head into production on Deathgasm 2! But to get the sequel made properly, he needs some help from the fans. That’s why Deathgasm 2 is currently raising funds and selling perks – including accepting pre-orders for copies of the finished film – on Kickstarter.
Deathgasm, released in 2015, tells the story of two high-school metal-heads, Brodie (played by Cawthorne) and Zakk (Blake), who form a band called Deathgasm. One day, while delving into some dark magic to escape their mundane lives, the duo unwittingly summon an evil entity called The Blind One. In the sequel, “which promises...

Screambox is headed back into the swamp with Victor Crowley, as the Bloody Disgusting-powered streamer has added a trio of Hatchet sequels, all courtesy of MPI/Dark Sky Films.
The following Hatchet films are now streaming on Screambox…
Hatchet II, which was directed by Adam Green, serves up a ferocious and exceptionally gory dose of splatterific entertainment with groundbreaking make-up effects, a wildly twisted sense of humor, and an even darker and bloodier ride than the first film. In the film, Marybeth (Danielle Harris) manages to escape the clutches of the bayou-butcher Victor Crowley and returns to the swamp with an army of hunters and gunmen, determined to end Crowley’s reign of horror forever.
In Hatchet III, directed this time by Bj McDonnell, the murderous slasher Victor Crowley takes on an entire police department, paramedic team, and heavily armed S.W.A.T. unit, forcing Marybeth and the troops into an epic showdown.

It’s increasingly rare to be surprised by a new movie’s existence entirely, particularly when it’s connected to an established IP. Studios inundate audiences with advertising in an effort to remain at the forefront of their minds while fervent fans dig up every crumb of information from the second a project is announced, leaving precious little to the imagination by the time a film hits the screen.
Blair Witch‘s covert reveal, The Cloverfield Paradox‘s unannounced release, and Split‘s connection to Unbreakable are recent examples that, regardless of the reception to the films themselves, generated buzz thanks to the element of surprise. Five years ago, writer-director Adam Green pulled off a similar achievement with Victor Crowley, the fourth installment in his Hatchet franchise.

Sunday Am Writethru: after Saturday post Before a big tentpole comes into the marketplace, there’s typically a lull at the box office. But it’s an even bigger lull when the major studios don’t have any new wide entries. Everyone is waiting for Warner Bros. The Batman next weekend, and many sources tell me it’s bound easily for a $100M+ opening, in fact $115M+, and the advance ticket sales are there to prove that.
This despite the 3-hour running time, and from what I hear (I haven’t seen it yet) is a more noir, detective story by director Matt Reeves than Christopher Nolan’s previous Dark Knight action-infused movies. iSpot shows Warner Bros. having already spent $28M+ in US TV spots (that’s even a big number from that data agency’s Pov) across such shows as the Winter Olympics, NFL, Good Morning America, NBA games and Big Brother: Celebrity Edition.

This weekend, Bj McDonnell’s throwback horror comedy Studio 666 invaded theaters exclusively and features the Foo Fighters squaring off against the forces of evil inhabiting a creepy Encino mansion as they work to finish up their tenth studio album.
During a recent press day for Studio 666, Daily Dead had the chance to chat with members of the Foo Fighters, including Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Rami Jaffee and Nate Mendel, during a roundtable interview where the group chatted about embarking on their very first movie project, influences behind Studio 666, some of the film’s gnarly kills, their thoughts on several of their co-stars, and more.
**Slight Spoiler Warning: While none of what is discussed here reveals much about the plot of the movie, several kills and a notable surprise cameo are discussed briefly here, which some readers might consider to be a little on the spoilery side. Just...

The Foo Fighters play themselves in this vanity project horror-comedy, directed by Bj McDonnell (Hatchet III). Die-hard fans of the band will enjoy seeing their heroes on the big screen, but for everyone else it’s a mildly amusing, occasionally tedious outing that’s better at serving up gore than it is at delivering laughs.
Set in the present day, the film opens with Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl deciding that he wants to do something special for their upcoming tenth album, so he persuades the band to record in a Hollywood mansion that was once the site of another band’s grisly demise. Arriving in theaters this Friday is the rocking horror comedy Studio 666, which features the Foo Fighters playing “themselves” as they contend with the effects of being stuck inside a haunted house as they try to record their tenth studio album. At the helm of the project is director Bj McDonnell, who is no stranger to the worlds of horror or rock, as he’s helmed projects such as Hatchet III and directed killer music videos from Slayer to boot.
During a recent press day for the film, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with McDonnell about his involvement with Studio 666 and how he aimed to celebrate the timeless art of practical effects and the tradition of movies centered around specific bands as well with this film. McDonnell also discussed embracing the collaborative process on the project with everyone involved, his experiences directing Dave Grohl and the rest of the Foo Fighters,...

When Dave Grohl first heard a film studio was interested in making a horror movie with the Foo Fighters, he dismissed the notion. But when a former landlord emailed him about a vacant Encino property, the Foo frontman decided to make the most out of the “big creepy old house.” There, he wrote and recorded the band’s 10th album, “Medicine at Midnight,” in addition to filming “Studio 666” — a once “stupid idea” transformed into a feature film starring the Foo Fighters. The movie debuts Feb. 25 in limited release.
Ahead of the film’s arrival, Grohl sat down with Variety to discuss “Studio 666,” along with his real-life ghost story and the metal album he recorded as fictional band Dream Widow.
When and how did the idea of “Studio 666” come to you?

James Corden put the musical identification skills of Dave Grohl and Hilary Duff to the test in a segment titled “James That Tune” on The Late Show Show Wednesday night. In the segment, Corden is tasked with playing a series of Foo Fighters songs on a keyboard for the pair to guess. After touring the world a thousand times, selling tens of millions of albums, and just last year being inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame, it would've seemed like there were no worlds left to conquer for Foo Fighters. It wasn't enough for Dave Grohl, the mastermind behind the group's biggest selling hits and the public face of the band, and so the band takes a step beyond their comfort zone and into the world of movies with Studio 666, a hybrid vanity project/self-deprecating horror comedy from director Bj McDonnell (Hatchet III). After twenty-five years as a band, Foo Fighters - or an exaggerated version of them - have hit a creative wall when it comes to writing their 10th studio album. In...

Don’t be fooled: the Foo Fighters’ “Studio 666” is not some extended music video gimmick put out by Dave Grohl and company. It’s a real horror movie with a legit runtime, a plot and a script. And though they’re amazed the movie actually got finished and exists, Grohl isn’t fooling himself that they’re suddenly real actors either.
“First of all, it wasn’t that much of a stretch to be the Foo Fighters. You throw us backstage in a room, and we are a comedy troupe everywhere we go, that’s just what happens, for the last quarter of a century,” Grohl told TheWrap in an interview, the second part of which will be published Thursday. “And nobody is going for an Oscar here, by the way. “This is our last show,” Dave Grohl announced at the outset of the Foo Fighters’ set Wednesday night at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. There was an awkward silence as the invited audience waited to see if there was a punchline coming or not. And there was: “Because now we’re fucking movie stars,” he declared.
Whether they have a Beatle-esque future in film comedy remains to be seen, but their first feature, “Studio 666,” is certainly light-hearted, in its own satanic way — think of it as “Help!” goes to hell — with a willingness to subject producer-stars who are playing themselves to a bloody body count not often seen since “Penn and Teller Get Killed.”

Nearly 20 years ago, Dave Grohl enlisted members of Motörhead, Celtic Frost, Venom, and other heavy-metal pioneers for Probot, his side project that he once referred to as a “death-metal Supernatural.” With the upcoming release of the Foo Fighters’ horror-comedy film Studio 666, Grohl returns to his most aggro side, telling Rolling Stone that he’s recorded an entire metal album as the film’s fictional band Dream Widow.

Dave Grohl hasn’t sat still for more than 30 years, so it’s not much of a surprise that he’s ended up creating and starring in his own feature film.
As Pat Smear, one of the founders of L.A. punk legends The Germs, touring guitarist in Nirvana and a cornerstone of Grohl’s Foo Fighters, told him, “Drummers are like sharks, if they stop moving, they’ll die.”

Foo Fighters record an album in a haunted mansion in the trailer for the band’s horror-comedy film “Studio 666,” premiering in theaters on Feb. 25.

Foo Fighters will give their fans goosebumps of the cinematic kind in February, when the horror comedy “Studio 666,” starring the band, hits theaters.
The film, which is released in the U.S. on Friday, February 25, 2022, was directed by Bj McDonnell (of 2019’s “Slayer: The Repentless Killogy” fame), from a story by Foo frontman Dave Grohl, with a screenplay by Jeff Buhler and Rebecca Hughes. “Studio 666” was acquired by Open Road Films Acquires for worldwide rights, and produced by Roswell Films’ and Therapy Studios’ John Ramsay and James A. Rota.
All six Foos – Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett and Rami Jaffee – will act as both executive producers and stars of “Studio 666,” with fellow thespians Whitney Cummings (“Roseanne” show runner), Leslie Grossman (“American Horror Story”), Will Forte (“MacGruber”), Jenna Ortega (the upcoming “Wednesday”) and Jeff Garlin (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”).

Exclusive: Think A Hard Day’s Night of the Living Dead, with laughs among the scares and splatter, and you’ve got a handle on Studio 666. Dave Grohl and his Foo Fighters bandmates star in a film they shot in secret, about what happens when the legendary rock band rents an Encino mansion steeped in grisly rock and roll history, to record their 10th album. Trouble is, frontman Grohl is creatively blocked, and when evil forces in the house sink into his consciousness, the creative juices begin flowing but so does the blood. Can Foo Fighters’ complete the album, with the band still alive to tour?
Open Road Films has acquired worldwide rights, and the distributor has set a wide theatrical release in 2000+ theaters on February 25. Along with Grohl and bandmates Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett & Rami Jaffee who play themselves, the cast includes Whitney Cummings, Leslie Grossman,...

Given that things are utterly bananas in the world right now, I think we’re all looking for places where we can get some comfort food, both of the literal and figurative variety. And when I think of comforting experiences in the horror genre, I think Caroline Williams. Ever since I first saw her play Vanita “Stretch” Brock in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, I’ve noticed that even her screams seem to have an element of laidback southern charm as all manner of gore and mayhem play out around her. She’s been a prolific presence on both the big and small screens since the ’80s, but she always manages to find her way back to the horror fold with turns in Stepfather II, Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, Leprechaun 3, and Verotika. So for this month’s movie, I’m going to combine her comforting screen presence with a film...

Having worked extensively as a director and camera operator on a wide range of films, Bj McDonnell has helped bring cinematic stories to life over the past two decades, and in his latest directorial project, he combines the music of Slayer with intense storytelling for a powerful viewing experience. With Slayer: The Repentless Killogy in theaters for one night only today, we caught up with McDonnell for our latest Q&a feature to discuss coming up with stories for The Repentless Killogy, working with the band he grew up listening to, bringing together horror icons for the film's eclectic cast, and giving fans of Slayer something that they can treasure forever.

As Slayer gear up for one last gallop ’round the pumpkin patch with a final set of U.S. tour dates, they’re putting out a concert film they shot at the Forum in L.A. in 2017.
A clip of the first song of the night, “Repentless,” shows the audience freaking out during the song’s intro — they throw the horns at imagery of crosses turning upside down — before the curtain shows the group’s pentagram logo and then drops to show the band digging into the thrasher. As a parting gift for their fans, Slayer will mark the last leg of their final tour with The Repentless Killology, a combination narrative movie and concert film. The film portion features the trilogy of videos that filmmaker Bj McDonnell made for “You Against You,” “Repentless,” and “Pride in Prejudice” — all off the band’s Repentless album — with a beefed-up storyline connecting them.
The concert film features the band’s entire Los Angeles Forum performance from August 5th, 2017. The video release will come out digitally and on Blu-ray on November 8th.

Slayer’s newest album, Repentless, is out and what better way of celebrating than introducing a uber-violent prison break featuring some icons of horror? The video is directed by Bj McDonnell, who directed Hatchet III. Slayer’s new album is full of some gnarly riffs and, being the metalhead I am, I highly recommend you pick up a copy or give it a spin this weekend.

In a canny move surprising few, Amazon have gone and echoed a pattern Netflix began around a year ago and nabbed a series from the Us where they will add an episode each week the day after its Us broadcast. This practice worked well with Breaking Bad and From Dusk Till Dawn in the past year and the publicity it got could well be the reason why you might encounter so many people who are only now making their way through five seasons of Breaking Bad via Netflix. So the show in question which be all exclusive up in here is the new Steven Spielberg/Halle Berry joint called Extant.
I knew nothing about this show going in and that is perhaps the best way to view it. I’m not going to claim this is the new Lost or whatever at this point but the first episode was ‘promising...

Stars: Danielle Harris, Kane Hodder, Zach Galligan, Caroline Williams, Parry Shen, Derek Mears, Rileah Vanderbilt, Sean Whalen, Jason Trost | Written by Adam Green | Directed by Bj McDonnell
The final film in the trilogy, Hatchet 3 loses the series’ director, Adam Green, replacing him with Bj McDonnell, who has previously carved out a career as cam/steadicam operator on a ton of movies – including one of my all-time favourite flicks, How to Rob a Bank. However all is not lost as Green is still on board as the films guiding light and scriptwriter for this tale which picks up immediately where the second film left off.
In Hatchet 3 our heroine Marybeth (Harris) has finally “killed” Victor Crowley (Hodder) – or so she thinks. When she shows up at the police station covered in blood the sheriff (Galligan) doesn’t believe her story and locks her up while he sends a search and recovery...

*Editor’s Note: As mentioned earlier this week, we decided to try something different with our “End of the Year” list, opting for our favorite horror experiences in 2013 over a top movies list. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading our writers’ picks, which not only includes movies, but performances, events, and collectibles. Wrapping up our Favorites of 2013 is Kristian Hanson, who shares some of his favorite movies, collectibles, and TV shows:
The Conjuring:
Taking a look back at 2013, the horror community was privileged to a great deal of quality film and horror collectibles. For my pick of my favorite horror film this year, I would have to place The Conjuring at the top of my list. I grew up with stories from my mother about these case files and when I finally got to see the film, James Wan did not disappoint. The spooky camerawork and atmosphere really placed me inside of the film,...

Today, we shine the spotlight not on movies but rather on the poster art that was attached to them in 2013. This past year saw some truly awesome poster art make its way onto the internet and our walls, to the point that it was no easy task to cut the list down to only ten. In fact, it was downright painful to be forced to exclude such memorable imagery as a devil baby rocking out in the womb (Hell Baby), Sheri Moon Zombie staring us down in creepy skeletal makeup (The Lords of Salem) and a scary-looking tree standing in front of a scary-looking house (The Conjuring) - which is why I simply couldn’t bring myself to make any further cuts than those.
So instead of the planned ten, let’s instead take a look at my personal picks for the top 13 coolest horror posters of 2013!

The Dead Island cinematic reveal trailer propelled the game from an obscure title known only to horror gamers to one of the most talked about titles in 2011. A feature film may not be moving forward yet, but Hatchet III director Bj McDonnell teamed up with Machinima to create a live-action version of the trailer.
For those that weren’t aware, Lionsgate acquired rights to produce a Dead Island movie back in 2011. We haven’t heard anything since, but this may draw a bit more interest to the project. Here are details from the original announcement:
“Santa Monica, CA, September 27, 2011– Lionsgate® (NYSE: Lgf), a leading global entertainment company, today announced that it has optioned film rights from Deep Silver to develop a feature inspired by Dead Island, which became a viral media sensation when its haunting, artful trailer launched in February 2011. The announcement was made by Lionsgate’s co-coo and Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake.

In 2011, Techland knocked our socks off with arguably one of the greatest video game trailers of all-time for the relatively unknown at the time video game Dead Island.
The trailer was viewed over 2.5 million times in the first five days and received universal praise from gaming and mainstream media outlets.
Today, Machinima launched a shot-for-shot, live action adaptation of the beloved trailer. Featuring the same iconic music, the production team matched the emotion and action of the original down to the smallest detail.
Bj McDonnell directed; he also helmed this year's Hatchet III. So, after seeing this, who's ready for that Dead Island movie Lionsgate said it was going to do?
