When Lee Sung Jin’s limited series Beef wrapped production back in 2022, the cast and crew were so happy with the profound camaraderie they’d developed that they’ve attempted to meet for dinner at least once a week ever since — some irony for a story originally borne out of anger and resentment.
Some time ago, pre-Beef, Lee found himself angrily tailing a driver in a road rage incident for nearly an hour. When he happened to tell Ravi Nandan, A24’s head of television, about this moment of madness, Nandan suggested Lee might expand on it. Was there more story to tell?
The complex and personal stories behind two strangers clashing with such vitriol eventually evolved into Lee’s limited series. At turns hilarious and disturbing, it follows the lives of Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) as they enter into an intense feud that is, in truth,...

The Broken News Season 1 ended with Radha Bhargava going to jail for accessing confidential files about Operation Umbrella and exposing them to the public. Dipankar Sanyal openly branded her a terrorist, and this led to her arrest, which she wholeheartedly contested and vowed to fight the injustice done to her. The Broken News is all about the world of television news media, where everyone is crazy about getting TRPs for their respective organizations. The show mirrors real-life instances many have not seen on live television and fictionalized all of them to show audiences the reality.
Spoilers Ahead

The Broken News season one was a good insight into how the news media worked, and it mirrored many instances that may or may not have occurred in real life. There is no shortage of television news channels anymore, and each of them runs only after Trp and forgets about presenting news to the people. An opinion and an agenda are already formed, as are the power dynamics when multinational companies begin to invest in them for their own benefit.
Season one ended with Radha Bhargava being sent to prison for speaking up against the Operation Umbrella, followed by Dipankar Sanyal openly declaring her to be a terrorist for speaking up against the surveillance program packaged beautifully as something that would benefit the people in the long run. The second season is directed by Vinay Waikul and written for the screen by Sambit Mishra. They are back, continuing the stories of Amina Qureshi,...

MollywoodWe list some, sadly rather few in number, well-written women characters in grey in Malayalam cinema who stuck to their guns till the end.Neelima MenonBindu Panicker as Seetha in RorschachKanchana’s eyes darken with desire as she stares at her sister-in-law’s karimani (black beads) chain. She hungrily tugs at the chain, describing its artistry at length to her awkward sister-in-law. When she is gifted a sari by her sister-in-law, she is torn between greed and jealousy, eventually succumbing to the latter emotion. Kanchana is an ordinary homemaker with lofty ambitions for material things, which her husband isn’t able to fulfil. At a time when the leading women in cinema were always divided into binaries, i.e., good or bad, Kanchana in Sathyan Anthikad’s Thalayanamanthram (1990) is a startling revelation. At least to begin with, more so because of the sublime nuances actor Urvashi lends to Kanchana. What...
