What The Tribeca Film Festival’s First ‘Digital Creators Market’ Says About The Future Of Indie Film
If social influencers and digital filmmakers needed more proof that they were bound to disrupt the traditional film and television industries, here’s more: for the first time, the 15th annual Tribeca Film Festival has announced an exclusive event to tout the burgeoning space.
Kicking off tonight with a screening of the long-anticipated Shay Carl-starring, Morgan Spurlock-produced Vlogumentary, the Tribeca Film Festival’s inaugural Digital Creators Market takes place tomorrow. During the event, online content creators like Jon Cozart, Mikey Murphy, Ingrid Nilsen, and Meghan Tonjes will connect with buyers, producers, and agents to discuss potential content ventures.
The event is also slated to feature a lineup of high-profile screenings, including YouTube Red’s Sing It! and Fullscreen’s Electra Woman & Dyna Girl. The Vlogumentary screening is particularly pertinent given that the film aims to cover the very rise of digital creators that the inaugural Market reflects.

Pastor Jamie Coots, who was the focus of National Geographic Channel's reality TV series "Snake Salvation," which revolved around Coots and his exploits at a snake-handling church in Kentucky, has died of a fatal snake bite. He was 42 years old. He was bitten on his hand during a church service earlier that day and refused medical attention. "They firmly believe they are commanded by the Bible to take up serpents as a sign to non-believers, and feel strongly they are exercising their religious freedom as guaranteed by the Constitution," said series executive producer Matthew Testa during a statement promoting the premiere. "They often say, 'God's law trumps the law of man.'" On Sunday, the National Geographic Channel released a statement offering condolences for the loss of the pastor. "In following Pastor Coots for our series 'Snake Salvation,' we were constantly struck by his devout religious convictions...

Andrew Hamblin is part of a group of Tennessee Christians who believe that God has instructed them to 'take up serpents' in the literal sense. He and some other preachers take the Biblical exhortation extremely seriously, as their unique (and illegal) form of religious practice involves praying with venomous snakes in their bare hands.
Soon they will be praying with serpents on reality TV on "Snake Salvation," set to debut September 10th on the National Geographic Channel. A camera crew followed around Hamblin, of Tabernacle Church of God in Lafollette, Tenn., and Jamie Coots of Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name Church of Middlesboro, Ky., in the fall of 2012 and the spring and summer of 2013.
Snake-handling has been going on in that region for generations, but while older serpent pastors were wary of outsiders, the younger crop of snake preachers are open about their practice, posting photos on Facebook and...
