Interview by Matthew Edwards
Tony Garnett is one of the most respected and celebrated British filmmakers of his generation having worked extensively in British television and through his work with critically acclaimed filmmakers such as Ken Loach, whom the pair worked together on the seminal British dramas Kes (1969) and Cathy Come Home (1966), both of which Garnett produced. Opting to move away from producing, Garnett set his sights on writing and directing his own feature films. After directing the critically acclaimed drama Prostitute (1980), Garnett went on to the write and direct the film Handgun (1983), a powerful cult rape and revenge thriller. Eschewing the exploitation motifs as explored in the genre titles such as Death Wish (1974), Abel Ferrara’s Ms. 45 (1981) and I Spit on Your Grave (1978), favouring an art-house aesthetic and employing a docudrama stylistic approach, Garnett’s film is a measured exploration of the nature of injustice and retribution while a...

Odd Man Out
Written by F.L. Green and R.C. Sherriff
Directed by Carol Reed
UK, 1947
Directed by Carol Reed and presented by the legendary J. Arthur Rank, both of whom were at the height of their careers with still more great films to come, Odd Man Out is one of the pinnacle achievements in post-war British cinema. And with James Mason in the lead, a major British star at the time, the film had everything going for it: superb direction, a solid screenplay, terrific performances, and stunning cinematography by Robert Krasker. The final result was named best film of the year by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and was chosen as one of the ten best films of 1947 by the National Board of Review. Certainly, Odd Man Out was widely seen and well regarded in its time. But now, with a newly released Criterion Blu-ray of the picture,...

A judge recorded not guilty pleas Wednesday for a former Marine who is charged with murder in the strangulation deaths of two women found in northwestern Indiana and is suspected of killing five others. During an initial hearing that lasted eight minutes, Lake County Magistrate Kathleen Sullivan explained to Darren Vann that the informal pleas in the strangulation deaths of 19-year-old Afrikka Hardy and 35-year-old Anith Jones would become formal in 20 days unless he or his attorney takes action. Vann, 43, had refused to speak during an initial hearing in the Hardy case a week earlier and was cited for contempt.

It's a world shared with "Warehouse 13" and "Eureka," but don't expect super-tech or steampunk artifacts. Instead, there exist people with extraordinary abilities that no one calls mutants. The premiere scientist studying these people, Dr. Lee Rosen (David Strathairn), calls them "Alphas." The American government has a task force to deal with Alphas headed by tactical enforcer Nathan Clay (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali) and a facility called "Binghamton" where Alphas are studied and stored if they are "bad." Rosen heads a more collegial group, our protagonist Alphas, officially part of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service of the Department of Defense. Their DoD liaison is Kathy Sullivan (Valerie Cruz) who gives every appearance of being a well-meaning sort, unlike her autocratic ...

Valerie Cruz will have to find a place to stay in Vancouver. She has earned a recurring role in the new Syfy series "Alpha." The show, which premieres July 11 on the cable channel, follows an almost amateur group of investigators, each with special abilities that get together to solve crimes. Cruz will play Special Agent Kathy Sullivan, who will appear in the third episode of the series on July 25. Not much is known about Sullivan except that she's an employee of the U.S. Department of Defense, according to a release from Syfy. "Alphas" has been picking up a lot of attention from the beginning, especially since famed "Lost" director Jack Bender is helming the 90-minute pilot that premieres in just a few weeks. The show also stars Oscar nominee David Strathairn, who plays Dr. Lee ...

Syfy’s entry into the world of humans with special abilities, Alphas, has found itself a recurring guest star in Valerie Cruz (formerly of the now canceled Off the Map). Cruz will make her first appearance in the third episode of the summer series, titled “Cause and Effect”. She portrays mysterious Depart of Defense Special Agent Kathy Sullivan and so far it seems for his first appearance she’ll solely be interacting with David Strathairn who plays the unconventional leader of his team of Alphas despite not having any superhuman abilities himself
Alphas is a more grounded variation of the “team of mutants fighting bad guys” theme that started decades ago with Marvel’s X-Men franchise. A similar approach was taken with NBC’s Heroes a few years back, but it eventually fell a part, losing touch with reality. Alphas seeks to be even more down to earth, with the...
