The BAFTAs have a soft spot for home-grown talent. Earlier this year, “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” scored four bids at the British Academy Film Awards, including Best Actor (Daryl McCormack) and Best Actress (Emma Thompson). Before that, in 2022, Adeel Akhtar snuck into the Best Actor lineup for “Ali & Ava” and Joanna Scanlan won Best Actress for “After Love.”

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022) is one film every movie viewer should see. Besides its top lead cast, the movie portrays a simple, realistic storyline that isn’t common in Hollywood. It isn’t every day movie fans see a plot centered around an older woman and a younger man. It’s one of the reasons Sophie Hyde‘s British sex comedy-drama, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, stands out. Its 97-minute runtime centers around an older woman who hires a younger, attractive sex worker to help her achieve pleasurable sex, which is part of her bucket list. Written by Katy Brand,...

For much of this year’s awards conversation, The Banshees Of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once have dominated in the major categories – but at the 2023 BAFTAs_ that cleaned up. Edward Berger’s film bagged seven awards on the night including Best Film – building up momentum throughout the show as it won multiple technical categories and major gongs over the course of the ceremony.
“For a German-language film, we’ve been blessed with so many nominations, and winning this is just incredible,” said producer Malte Grunert on stage while picking up Best Film. The film’s big wins also came freighted with the relevancy of its World War I story. Upon winning Adapted Screenplay, writer-director Berger noted that in five days time it will be a year since war began in Ukraine, and stated that: “There are no heroes in any war.”

BAFTA is an independent arts charity that comprises thousands of industry insiders, much like the American motion picture academy. The BAFTAs could well give us a preview of what the Oscars might do in three weeks time on March 12. And since voting for Oscars starts on March 2, just 11 days after the BAFTAs, these awards could be doubly influential.
However, the BAFTAs amended their nominations voting as of last year. After the initial longlists were decided, the nominees for acting and directing were chosen by small juries, leveling the playing field between the highest-profile awards contenders and worthy underdogs.

At a rather subdued Berlinale in 2022, Emma Thompson was — as might be expected — one of the highlights. In town for a special gala screening of comedy drama Good Luck to You, Leo Grande alongside her co-star, newcomer Daryl McCormack, the actress was in typically upbeat spirits (and was even thanked by one reporter in the press conference for bringing the “party mood” to an otherwise party-less festival).
Leo Grande — which first premiered in Sundance just weeks earlier and came to Berlin for its European premiere — was a classic stripped-back Covid production, a uniquely told two-hander set almost entirely in a hotel room and following a widow who hires a sex worker to achieve her first orgasm.
A year on from its Berlin bow and, alongside a solid international box office (it was released on Hulu in the U.S.), Leo Grande has managed to keep its momentum going long enough to become an awards contender,...

I didn't wake up early for the Oscar nominations today. By the time the announcements roll around each year, I have a hard time mustering up the energy to care. It's not because I don't appreciate the feeling of joy and excitement when a deserving dark horse contender makes the cut (go Stephani Hsu!), or when a hidden gem gets a well-earned spot.
It's because by the time we reach this point in the Oscar conversation, the short list of nominees seems to have already hardened and crystalised before our very eyes, leaving great films out in the cold along the way. We may not have known who had a nod on lock before waking up this morning, but we could all count the contenders on two hands. The result is a discourse that eliminates certain actors and titles from the running before they're even truly considered, simply by failing...

The nominees for the upcoming 2023 British Academy Film Awards have been revealed.
Leading with 14 nominations, among the 25 categories, is Edward Berger’s adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front”. Despite the First World War drama’s lack of fanfare since its Netflix release last October, the film has garnered notable attention as awards season picks up.
Following “All Quiet” is Martin McDonagh’s comedy-drama “The Banshees of Inisherin” with 10 nominations, including nods to leading star Colin Farrell. The film is tied with the hit indie flick “Everything Everywhere All At Once”.

Seen as the main precursor to what you might expect on Oscar nomination morning, the nominations for the 2023 Ee BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, and Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” gained even more steam as a major awards threat, with an impressive 14 nominations in total. The movie equals Ang Lee’s 2001 “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the film not the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.
Other films that had a strong showing in overall noms include “The Banshees of Insiherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10 each), “Elvis” (9 noms), and “Tar” (5 noms), but possibly the most surprising inclusion was that both leads of the acclaimed indie “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” — Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack — scored leading actress and actor nods, respectively.

Christmas and Emma Thompson seem to go together. The celebrated two-time Oscar-winning actress costarred not only in 2019’s Last Christmas, but in what become a certified holiday classic, 2003’s Love Actually, a yuletide-set romantic comedy that has become so beloved, returning year after year, that ABC News recently devoted an entire Diane Sawyer hour to examining it.

A star maestro. Multiverse dwellers. Fearless journalists who historically propelled the #MeToo movement. 2022 has supplied an embarrassment of riches when it comes to complex roles written for women, brought to life by a diverse array of actresses. In separate conversations with Variety, several of the names leading the awards conversation offered insights into their characters, reflecting on the most challenging aspects of their parts.
Playing the retired schoolteacher Nancy who hires a sex worker in Sophie Hyde’s “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” Emma Thompson recognized the utmost significance of a role that focused on a woman’s sexual pleasure.
“Especially a woman who has been roundly ignored and given very little agency in films,” she says. Thompson had been in search of a heroic role such as Nancy for years, so she knew her inside and out for a long time. “She’s someone who decides to cross...

As Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack log on to Zoom to discuss their Hulu film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, their ease with each other is immediately clear. They’ve been texting, trying to find time to hang out, and before they get into interview mode, they talk about their mutual love of the brand Carhartt, which they both happen to be wearing. “We wear the same clothes, basically,” says Thompson.
This kind of closeness was necessary to make Leo Grande, a two-hander directed by Sophie Hyde from a script written by Katy Brand. Thompson plays a woman who calls herself Nancy, a widowed teacher who hires a sex worker going by the name of Leo Grande (McCormack). Nancy’s goal: to have an orgasm, because she has never had one. Sophie Hyde’s “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, receiving critical acclaim — particularly for its star Emma Thompson — with many calling her a potential Oscars best actress contender. But the British sex comedy, which was acquired by Searchlight Pictures and later released on Hulu June 17, became ineligible when the Academy reverted to its pre-pandemic requirements that a film must have a theatrical release of seven days before debuting on a streaming platform.
However, Variety has now confirmed that Searchlight Pictures formally submitted an appeal to deem the film eligible, and the Academy has approved it for awards consideration. In addition to AMPAS, the film has also been cleared for awards submission by BAFTA (which was already given due to Lionsgate distributing the film in the U.K.), Screen Actors Guild (SAG), Producers Guild of America (PGA) and Critics Choice...

It’s because we don’t see “older” women — Emma Thompson is 63; is that old? — onscreen quite like this. As vulnerable. As searching. As confused. As sexual. As people. As, really, anything at all beyond a saintly devoted mother and/or wife and/or support mechanism for other people, usually a male protagonist. Existing purely in the shadow of others.
Fuuuuuuck that shit.
Be sure to toast your sex worker (and tip him well).
But here is Thompson’s Nancy, a retired schoolteacher, a widow, checking into a lux(ish) London hotel room as Leo Grande opens. Tiny details in Sophie Hyde’s (52 Tuesdays) direction and Katy Brand...

Here's one we absolutely meant to review at Sundance but didn't get to. We did you disservice. This must-see drama from writer Katy Brand and director Sophie Hyde, now streaming on Hulu, is a fine specimen in the increasingly endangered species of "character-based drama for adults". More rising directors and screenwriters should attempt low-budget premises like -- easier to get funding -- provided they can find and guide actors savvy enough to pull off something direct and delicate. Hyde and Brand have done just that even if they haven't attempted to make it very "cinematic". It's not based on a play but it does feel like a film version of a play. For the wisely economical 97 minute running time we're entirely focused on just two people in one hotel room. Nancy Stokes (Emma Thompson) is a lonely fifty something widow who hires a male escort "Leo Grande...

Good Luck To You, Leo Grande is coming out at the right time. Kind, contained, and funny, this film––written by Katy Brand and directed by Sophie Hyde––serves as an antidote to a weary world. The premise is simple: retiree Nancy (Emma Thompson) has booked a sex worker named Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) to fulfill desires that have lain dormant for the majority of her life. The film opens on their first meeting, wringing both dramatic and comedic tension out of the scenario. The acting is top-notch, as is the writing. Hyde’s ability to merge it all together is a feat all its own.
As it arrives on Hulu, we were lucky enough to speak with both Hyde and Brand about the film, its inceptions, the themes within, and the honor of working with a legend like Emma Thompson.
The Film Stage: To start, how does the film come together?...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on June 16th, reviewing “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” a two-person dance featuring Emma Thomspson. Streaming on Hulu beginning June 17th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Emma Thompson is Nancy, a British widow of two years who hires sex worker Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack), because her life, while okay in a domestic sense, had never been fulfilling in the bedroom. As they get down to it, some unusual emotions emerge, not only in Nancy but in Leo as well … since Nancy insists on getting to know him. Their relationship grows after a couple sessions, but also teeters dangerously close to untenable, due to too much information.
”Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” will stream on Hulu beginning June 17th. Featuring Emma Thompson, Darryl McCormick and Isabella Laughland. Written by Katy Brand. Directed by Sophie Hyde. Rated “R...

The Roman Spring of Emma Thompson: Hyde Demands Over Time in Sex Work Dramedy
One wonders what Camille Paglia might have to say about Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, the third feature from Australia’s Sophie Hyde, which formulates an earnest, sex-positive portrait of a mature woman’s humble quest for sexual satisfaction. Of Paglia’s many musings on sexuality, she posited ‘pursuit and seduction’ were necessary components constituting the ‘sizzle,’ both elements absent from this sometimes refreshingly blunt tackling of women pursuing pleasure.
Written by Katy Brand, who’s heretofore mined her talents in comedy, this sobering treatment of what some women may want takes a while to hit its stride, and features a winsome Emma Thompson, managing to land the fluctuations of her characterization even when the narrative feels like a lasso.…...

Burning (Lee Chang-dong)
After Poetry, it makes sense that Lee Chang-dong would find himself interested in deconstructing another literary genre: the murder mystery. Adapting Haruki Murakami’s short story “Barn Burning” for the screen, the South Korean master has created something that feels akin to a real page turner, with each cut, the tensions, and the mystery rise as we become desperate to know whatever happened to Shin Hae-mi (Jeon Jong-seo), the young woman who went missing, leaving her childhood friend Lee Jong-su (Yoo Ah-in) searching for her. With pulpy characters, including a delicious Steven Yeun as a mysterious Gatsby-like figure, and a dark sense of humor, the film also serves as a study of class and the way in which the...

This review of “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” was first published on January 22 after the film’s Sundance premiere.
The Sundance entry “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” may well be sparking awards chatter for 2023 over Emma Thompson’s marvelous turn as Nancy Stokes, a widowed, retired secondary-school religious-education teacher who decides to hire the titular escort, played by Daryl McCormack (“The Wheel of Time”).
The script by comedian Katy Brand is essentially a two-hander that takes place almost entirely inside a single hotel room, and could be easily reimagined as a West End play. But the cast and crew — led by Australian filmmaker Sophie Hyde, who brought “52 Tuesdays” and “Animals” to Sundance in 2014 and 2019, respectively — have put so much care into making the most within the piece’s limited confines that one could hardly deride the final product as stagy.
