This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Discovery."
For many Trekkies, "Star Trek: Discovery" has always felt a little like the younger brother clinging onto the franchise's back. The sky-high stakes that always seem to threaten the universe, the heavily serialized nature from episode to episode, and even the way these heart-on-their-sleeve characters carry themselves throughout their duties has all but screamed the fact that this show was meant for younger, more modern audiences.
So imagine our surprise when episode 4 of this final season suddenly dipped into its bag of tricks to unleash not one, but two classic examples of TV tropes that hearken back to the days of "The Original Series." The "time bug" kicks everything off, catching Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) in the most quintessential of Trekkian problems: a time loop. Although not unfamiliar territory for our...

When it was announced that season 5 of "Discovery" would be its last, even the show's biggest and most loyal fans had to wonder exactly what showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise might have up their sleeves for one final adventure. That turned out to be no small thing, following the reveal that they would be following in the footsteps of a game-changing storyline in the canon first introduced in "The Next Generation" -- the so-called Progenitors and their role as, essentially, the creators of all sentient humanoid life in the galaxy. At its heart, "Trek" has always concerned itself with the most high-minded of ideas, routinely posing existential questions and philosophical debates. But as Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Book (David Ajala), and everyone else on board the USS Discovery race against time to put the pieces together for...

We knew Discovery was different from the start. Pitched as a prequel to The Original Series, the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery had a ton of references to the first Trek series, including Michael Burnham as Spock’s adopted sister, which also meant appearances from Sarek and Amanda Grayson, as well as Kirk’s predecessor Captain Pike.
The most audacious connection to The Original Series came with the revelation that Discovery‘s Captain Gabriel Lorca came from the Mirror Universe, that evil alternate dimension first introduced in the Tos season two episode “Mirror, Mirror.” In that 1967 episode, written by Jerome Bixby and directed by Marc Daniels, an ion storm disrupts Kirk’s attempt to beam back to the Enterprise, causing him to materialize abroad on the alternate-universe Iss Enterprise, part of the Terran Empire.
While Discovery‘s first season did visit the Mirror Universe, where they found a...

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.
At the end of the Star Trek: Discovery season five premiere “Red Directive,” Dr. Kovich finally levels with Captain Burnham. The mission that she and her crew had been on throughout the episode has escalated beyond even Admiral Vance’s clearance, to a level that only someone as deep within the Federation as Kovich can understand.
The mission involves the Progenitors, the source of all humanoid life in the universe. “A few thousand years ago, we’d have found them gods,” says Kovich. But to long-time Trekkies, the Progenitors are also the topic of a remarkable episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
As much as we all love Star Trek and its wild world of alien races, the fact remains that the large majority of those aliens are just regular-looking humans with different bits of putty slapped on their foreheads. Romulans, Klingons,...

Shields up! This article contains major spoilers for the season 5 premiere of "Star Trek: Discovery."
Who knew that "Star Trek: Discovery" would be saving its biggest reveal for last? After being responsible for kickstarting the new era of "Trek" on streaming, the fifth and final season is signaling the beginning of the end for the flagship series. But as fans would expect, the opening episode proves the writing team has no intentions of taking its final bow without crafting one last adventure worthy of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Mr. Saru (Doug Jones), and the rest of the Discovery crew. So perhaps it was inevitable that the biggest twist of the young season would have its roots in one of the most game-changing hours of "Trek" lore ever.
Trekkies will no doubt remember the classic "Next Generation" episode "The Chase," which first introduced the extinct race known as the Progenitors.

“Star Trek: Discovery,” the flagship series of Paramount+’s “Star Trek” universe, is heading toward its ending. The series, which premiered in 2017, will premiere its fifth and final season on April 4, closing the book on the adventures of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew.
A new season also means new challenges for any Starfleet captain, and IndieWire can exclusively share a new clip from the premiere episode that promises a big one for Burnham. On a recovery mission to secure a mysterious ship, Burnham receives information from her crew about signs of life on board. But as her supervisor Kovich coldly reminds her, her mission requires her to neutralize the potential threat “by any means necessary.”

Sonequa Martin-Green’s first memories of “Star Trek” are of her parents watching it on TV — but really, they’re of Nichelle Nichols.
“I don’t even know as a child if I knew her real name, but I knew, here’s this beautiful Black woman,” Martin-Green says. “This is Uhura.”
Those memories — and that instinctive sense of the character’s significance — have stayed with Martin-Green through her seven years making “Star Trek: Discovery” as the first Black woman to headline a series in the venerated science fiction franchise. “Star Trek” had been absent from television for 12 years when “Discovery” launched in 2017, but as the flagship Paramount+ series premieres its fifth and final season on April 4, the franchise has the most robust slate of TV titles in its history, with a new show, the “Discovery” spin-off “Starfleet Academy,” set to begin filming later this year in the same Pinewood Toronto soundstages as its predecessor.

“Between season 1 and season 5 is an entire life.” That’s a real understatement on the part of Sonequa Martin-Green in an interview with Den of Geek magazine, describing the five-season and seven-year journey of her character Michael Burnham, the protagonist of Star Trek: Discovery.
When we first met Burnham way back in 2017, she was the first officer on the USS Shenzhou, a Starfleet ship operating about a decade before the events of The Original Series, and under the command of Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). By the end of the two-part premiere, Georgiou was dead and Burnham was in prison for mutiny.
Things have certainly changed since then. We begin Discovery‘s fifth and final season with Captain Michael Burnham of the USS Discovery, but adventuring over 900 years after the events of the premiere. Yeah, it’s been a wild journey, one that incurred more than a little criticism early...

When producer Alex Kurtzman launched Star Trek: Discovery nearly a decade ago, the idea of bringing the Star Trek franchise back to TV was a gamble. Back in 2015, the most popular science fiction TV series were either on the SyFy Channel or Doctor Who. After having gone out with a whimper with Enterprise in 2005, could Trek rematerialize as a fully rejuvenated version of itself? Could a mainstream audience be enticed back to the final frontier by yet another new crew? At first, the answer was maybe.
After several delays, Star Trek: Discovery debuted in 2017 on a newly minted streaming service, CBS All-Access, and the reviews were mixed. After the departure of Bryan Fuller, some critics felt Disco’s first season had a patchwork quality, amounting to a Trek tapestry that was as challenging as it was audacious. Star Trek was on the ground this weekend at WonderCon! On Friday, Paramount+ and CBS Studios hosted a Sing-Along for the first time. This included a screening of the “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” musical episode, “Subspace Rhapsody,” followed by a moderated Q&a with songwriters Tom Polce and Kay Hanley, also of Letters to Cleo fame, where they discussed writing the songs for Star Trek’s first ever musical episode.
Then on Saturday, fans were treated to an advance screening of the premiere episode of the final season of “Star Trek: Discovery.” Immediately following, a moderated Q&a with Michelle Paradise (EP/Co-Showrunner) and Olatunde Osunsanmi (EP/Director) took place in front of the crowded room where they discussed working on the exciting final season and teasing what’s to come in the upcoming episodes. One of the newest cast members of “Star Trek: Discovery” season 5, Elias Toufexis (L...

A new face has joined the ensemble for the final season of "Star Trek: Discovery," along with a seemingly familiar set of pointy ears. A character named Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is poised to board "Star Trek: Discovery" for the show's last voyage on Paramount+, and at first blush, this new player appears to be a Vulcan or similar alien species. A TrekMovie interview with series co-showrunner Michelle Paradise, however, has revealed that Rayner isn't Vulcan or Romulan after all: he's actually part of a lesser-known "Star Trek" species called the Kelleruns.
"He's a Kellerun," Paradise told the outlet after also reportedly confirming the character's background to SFX Magazine. "We were looking for a species that not a lot had been done with them. We definitely wanted another non-human on the ship and taking care of things." Currently, Doug Jones' Kelpien executive officer Saru is the most obviously alien member of the Discovery crew,...

Approaching the final season of Star Trek: Discovery feels bittersweet. The adventures of this crew have been unique, primarily because of their time-jumping. The future of Star Fleet always had potential, and Discovery tapped into that well. No matter how you feel about Star Trek: Discovery, it’s been a show that wears its heart on its sleeve and opened the door to new viewers in the process. The final season kicked off at SXSW 2024, and the big screen premiere lived up to the venue.
Star Trek: Discovery Plot
After the events of Season 4, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonnequa Martin-Green) struggles to move on from Book (David Ajala). His betrayal landed him a rotation with Star Fleet, and he bounces around the galaxy, helping relocate those displaced by the Dma. When an 800-year-old Romulan ship suddenly appears, Kovich (David Cronenberg) joins Discovery to pick up its cargo. However, a pair of salvagers,...

When asked about the long journey to Star Trek: Discovery‘s fifth and final season, producer Alex Kurtzman is honest but optimistic. “It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman tells Den of Geek when we chat with him at SXSW 2024. “And yeah, it was an incredibly bumpy first year.”
Kurtzman’s referring to the behind-the-scenes difficulties that plagued the show’s first two seasons. Initially developed by Bryan Fuller, who wrote for Deep Space Nine and Voyager before going on to make fan-favorite shows such as Hannibal and American Gods, Discovery ultimately premiered with Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts as showrunners. By the end of season two, both had left the show, with Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise stepping in as showrunners to right the ship.

When showrunner Michelle Paradise and co-creator Alex Kurtzman sat down to begin planning what would ultimately become the final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” they had one big goal: “Bigger and bolder,” of course, Paradise said.
They didn’t originally know the program would be coming to an end, but they still wanted to take some big swings when it came to keeping the story fresh for Season 5 — and that means compelling villains.
“They’re kind of like the Bonnie and Clyde of the ‘Star Trek’ universe,” Kurtzman said to IndieWire about the new baddies that fans will meet in the premiere episode. “But like all great villains, they have a sympathetic story. You know the old adage: The villain is the hero of their own story. That’s very true for them, and I think ultimately you’ll love them as much as you’ll see them as the villain.

Quick, who’s the most important person in Star Trek? Jim Kirk? Jean-Luc Picard? Morn?
No, no, and maybe, but not who we had in mind. The most important person in Star Trek is the character who has appeared in every series, except The Original Series: William T. Riker, the character immortalized by Jonathan Frakes.
Of course, Frakes played Commander Riker for seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation. His twin/clone/variant Thomas Riker showed up as a Maquis agent on Deep Space Nine, while Q shenanigans brought Will to the Delta Quadrant on Voyager. No one, not even Frakes, likes Riker’s appearance with Troi in the finale of Enterprise. But everyone loved Riker and Troi’s vocal appearances on Lower Decks. And, yes, it takes some fudging, but Star Trek: Very Short Treks allowed Riker to blast his trombone with the Star Trek: The Animated Series crew,...

Watching the world premiere of "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5 in a packed theater at the SXSW Film Festival is enough to give even the most cynical Trekkie a case of the fuzzies. Supporting characters earned applause as they entered. Big action beats elicited vocal appreciation. Even small gags brought big laughs. I watched and listened as a "Star Trek" show that has sometimes left me, a lifelong follower of the franchise, frustrated and annoyed held its intended audience in the palm of its hand. That intended audience? Well... "Star Trek" fans who happen to love "Star Trek: Discovery," I suppose. I don't want to put anyone in a box, but this show has to be someone's favorite iteration of "Star Trek," and it was clear the audience was full of those folks.

Alex Kurtzman looks exactly how you’d expect someone to look at the end of a five-year-mission for Starfleet: relaxed, confident, and ready to bring the ship home. At least, that’s the impression he gives when he, showrunner Michelle Paradise, and stars Sonequa Martin-Green and David Ajala talk with Den of Geek about the upcoming fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery during SXSW 2024. You almost can’t tell this show has faced many trials and tribulations across its seven years on the air.
“It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman declares during our chat, but quickly adds, “It was an incredibly bumpy first year.” Only a calm man can use words like “incredibly bumpy” to describe Discovery‘s inaugural season in 2017, the first new Star Trek television series since Enterprise went off the air in 2005. In 2017, the venerable “Star Trek” science fiction franchise had gone a full twelve years without a new series, after Upn aired the series finale of “Enterprise” in 2005. That changed when Paramount released “Star Trek: Discovery” on their CBS All Access (since rebranded to Paramount+) streamer, kicking off a new era for the IP.
Now, seven years later, the series is set to take its own bow. The fifth and last season of “Discovery” is set to premiere this April, and Paramount+ has released a new trailer for the series’ swan song.
Initially set a decade before the events of the iconic 1966 “Original Series,” “Star Trek: Discovery” focused on Michael Burnham a crew member on the Federation ship USS Discovery. Initially a science specialist under the command of Captains Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) and Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), she fully takes charge as the leader of the ship at the end...

On the surface it seems to be odd for a "Star Trek" legend like Jonathan Frakes to excitedly report that the fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" will feel like "Indiana Jones" and "Deadpool," two flavors that absolutely do not go together at all, but there's a good reason for him to be making those comparisons.

Fans have been mixed on the more serious tone of "Discovery," especially compared to all the Og "Trek" shows and even the "Discovery" spin-off "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," which follows Captain Pike's adventures in the years before a certain James T. Kirk shows up to claim the captain's chair on the Enterprise. "Strange New Worlds" isn't all rainbows and sunshine, but there's a thrill to the adventure and the desire to explore that underlines that series which keeps it from getting...

The Star Trek universe is slowing down at Paramount+.
The streaming service announced Thursday that Star Trek: Discovery will end with its fifth season.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, additional filming will help craft a proper conclusion for the now-final season.
The news is somewhat surprising, especially when you consider that it wasn't always planned to be the end.
Hopefully, the fans who have spent five seasons watching the series will get a conclusive ending.
"When we first started talking about the return of Star Trek eight years ago, we never could have imagined the indelible impact Star Trek: Discovery would have," said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios.
"The series brought back a beloved global franchise, and just like its predecessors Discovery honored Star Trek's legacy of 'infinite diversity in infinite combinations,' representing the best of what we could be as humans when we celebrate our differences.

Star Trek: Discovery is coming to end.
The Paramount+ sci-fi drama will embark on its final voyage with its upcoming fifth season.
Sources say principal filming of the season is mostly complete. But with this move to end the show, there will be additional filming to help craft a conclusion for the series. The fifth and final season will premiere in early 2024.
Launched in 2017, Discovery is credited with successfully launching a new era of Trek TV. The series, starring Sonequa Martin-Green, was heralded as the first Trek show headed by a Black female lead, plus marked other firsts along the way in Lgbtqia+ representation, as well as pioneered a more serialized storytelling format for the 50-year-old franchise. Discovery also helped launch CBS’ streaming service (then called CBS All Access) and currently stands as Paramount+’s longest-running drama. The success of Discovery led to a multitude of other Trek projects being developed,...

Star Trek: Discovery has always been fun, but it sounds like Season 5 could be a tad lighter than the Paramount+ drama has been in the past. Series star Wilson Cruz (who plays Dr. Hugh Culber) and co-showrunner Michelle Paradise sat down with Andrea Towers in TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine‘s studio at New York Comic Con 2022 to tease the upcoming fifth season — which they’ve been filming since June — and share their excitement over finally getting to share a look at it with the fans. (The trailer debuted as part of the Star Trek Universe Nycc panel.) After the heaviness of the third (following the jump to the future) and fourth seasons, “we talked a lot about doing a tonal shift. Those were the first things that [co-showrunner] Alex [Kurtzman] and I talked about at the start of the season, so I feel like people will be excited for that...

Screenwriters across the industry are mourning the long-running Warner Bros. Television Workshop, which newly merged studio Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down after more than 40 years.
“I got my first staff writing gig b/c of the WB Writers Workshop. The reason I can celebrate the release of a trailer for my movie today ties back to this workshop,” tweeted Akela Cooper (class of 2009), who wrote the screenplay for upcoming Blumhouse feature M3GAN (whose trailer has become an instant viral sensation). “It helped kick start so many careers. To see it scrapped in the name of capitalism is infuriating and heartbreaking.”
For more than 40 years, the Warner Bros. writers’ workshop selected up to eight early-career writers (out of more than 2,500 annual submissions) with the immediate goal of staffing them on a Wbtv-produced show and the longer-term goal of establishing their careers in the industry.
