Ten projects in development will be presented to industry professionals during the 8th Transilvania Pitch Stop (Tps) at this year’s Transilvania Intl. Film Festival, with a hybrid pitching session on July 29 including a range of film funds, distributors, sales agents, producers and financiers both online and on-site in the host city of Cluj.
Launched in 2014 as a five-day workshop for first- and second-time directors from Romania and Moldova, the Pitch Stop expanded in 2017 to include a co-production platform with projects from neighboring countries. The program – which has become one of the leading industry confabs in the region – looks to foster cross-border collaboration while also nurturing and supporting emerging talent.
TIFF industry manager Ioana Lazareanu says the Tps’ mission is to help create “a synergy between the creative side in the industry and the business side.”

The film is one of the very few independent Romanian features made outside Bucharest. Talk of Cluj-Napoca becoming an important regional filmmaking centre has been in the air almost since the inception of the Transilvania International Film Festival two decades ago, but only a handful of features have actually been shot in the Transylvanian town, including Ion Indolean’s Warsaw-selected Tony & Friends (2020). Romanian actor-director Rareş Abraham seems determined to put Cluj-Napoca back on the filmmaking map with his directorial debut, Friday the 3rd, which will soon start post-production after being shot in February. The feature consists of three interconnecting stories: the first stars Abraham as a man facing a difficult choice, the second centres on two spouses (Maria Obretin and Alin Panc) trying to save their marriage, while the last one focuses on two former university colleagues (Alexandru Unguru and Luchian Pantea) sharing a secret. Supporting characters are played...
Robert Popa’s low-budget, independent comedy may well prove to be Romania’s next domestic hit. Recent years have shown an unexpected trend in Romania: a string of independent comedies (the most recent being Miami Bici – see the news) that quickly became record breakers at the domestic box office. The next hit may very well be The Dac Side of the Moon (where “dac” is the Romanian word for “Dacian”), a parody helmed by first-time director Robert Popa that will start production in June. The project is being staged by Papa Pictures, with Alin Panc, Alexandru Pop and Cosmin Seleşi serving as producers, and co-produced by Compass Studio (Dorian Stan) and Erka (Ruxandra Şerban). The screenplay, written by George Lungoci and Popa, goes almost two millennia back in time, when the Dacians are under threat from the Romans, but pretty much any relationship the story may have with historical accuracy stops.

When a contract is put out on the same coldblooded drug dealer, both Brazil and Flint want him dead – one for the money, the other for revenge. With crooked Interpol agents and vicious members of the criminal underworld hot on their trail, these two assassins reluctantly join forces to quickly take out their target before they themselves are terminated.
