Robert Duvall has a few inviolable rules when he's making a movie: If there's a horse to be ridden, he will ride it; if there is a dance to be danced, he will dance it, and if there is a song to be sung, he will sing it.
"Those three things I am going to do myself without a double, unless it's a dangerous stunt," the legendary actor tells Rolling Stone Country.
So when the script for his new film, Wild Horses, called for him to sing the western standard,...

Read More: SXSW Review: Robert Duvall Directs James Franco and Josh Hartnett in Middling 'Wild Horses' Fans of rural-set murder mysteries will want to check out this trailer for Robert Duvall's new directorial venture, "Wild Horses." The film follows a Texas ranger who reopens a cold case and suspects a wealthy ranch owner and his family are somehow involved, especially after an estranged son returns home. Duvall, who wrote the screenplay with a story by Michael Shell, also stars as the Texas patriarch who will stop at nothing to protect his family. James Franco and Josh Hartnett play his onscreen sons and his real-life wife, Luciana Duvall, stars opposite as the Texas Ranger. 'Wild Horses' was an official selection at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival where it was picked up for distribution by Entertainment One Films. It will be released in theaters and on VOD on...

Ten films in today's MPAA ratings bulletin and ten R-ratings beginning with Todd Haynes' Carol starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, which will be heading to Cannes before hitting theaters later this year, most likely late as I expect the Weinsteins to milk this one, especially if it plays well on the Croisette. We also have Seth MacFarlane's Ted 2, which, unsurprisingly, received and R-rating, alongside a slew of smaller features including Results starring Guy Pearce and Cobie Smulders; Samba starring Omar Sy and Charlotte Gainsbourg and Robert Duvall's Wild Horses, which Duvall directed and stars in alongside James Franco, Josh Hartnett, Luciana Duvall, Adriana Barraza and Jim Parrack. Check out the complete bulletin below. Carol Rated R For a scene of sexuality/nudity and brief language. Release Date: TB 2015 In The Courtyard Rated R For drug use and language. Last Shift Rated R For bloody horror violence,...

In your typical crime thriller, activism isn’t high on the list of focal plot points. Right off the bat, that’s what makes Robert Duvall’s latest western, Wild Horses, stand out from the mass of films following relatively similar stories. Writer/director/lead Duvall sets out to show just how hard life can be for someone who can’t adapt to modern thinking and how immensely difficult that can make things for those closest to him, especially when they’re the cause of his rage and confusion.
Scott Briggs (Duvall) is a 70-something rancher stuck in his ways. Fifteen years ago he kicked his son Ben (James Franco) off his property for being gay, but he’s asked him to come back into town so the family can go over his will and try to reconnect. Complicating this reunion is the fact that a Texas ranger, Samantha Payne...

There's a twinge of activism amid the threads of Robert Duvall's latest directorial effort Wild Horses. Although a traditional crime story, Duvall slightly subverts this simple approach, casting himself as a man confronted with a lifestyle he doesn't quite understand, exploring an ideological message rather unexpected for a film like this. It's an interesting choice and potentially effective one. Unfortunately, it's packaged in a middling, mediocre framework that's inert almost from the word "go". The film opens with Scott Briggs (Duvall), a ranch owner, finding his son, Ben (James Franco), fooling around with another man in their barn. He ultimately chases the kid off and we flash forward fifteen years to learn the young man Briggs chased off that night actually disappeared. The police never found a body or a suspect. Now, Samantha Payne (Luciana Duvall), a Texas ranger, has decided to reopen the case. She suspects the missing...

Great minds think — and apparently dress! — alike. Jennifer Lopez and Robert Duvall's wife Luciana Pedraza showed up to the 2015 Oscars on Feb. 22 in remarkably similar (though not identical) dresses. Both women wore sparkling ball gowns with plunging V-necks and voluminous tulle skirts. Their styling was similar, too: elegant updos and drop earrings. Best Costume Design presenter Lopez, 45, chose an Elie Saab Haute Couture number that showed off her ample cleavage and featured intricate beading all over the bodice and the top of the [...]...

It's once again time to drag out the celebrity equivalent to musty yearbooks: wonderfully dated red carpet photos. With the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday Jan. 25, we dug through the archives and surfaced 20 years of gowns, power couples and confusing trends straight from the SAGs of yore. While Benedict Cumberbatch and Rosamund Pike are still relatively new to the SAG scene, most of the nominees have been walking the show's star-studded carpet for years. This means plenty of hidden treasures, from Jennifer Aniston's formal crop top to Billy Bob Thorton's inexplicable hair. See what 2015's honorees look like...

The Hollywood press corps, friends and supporters sang "Happy Birthday" to 80-year-old Robert Duvall at Grauman's Chinese Theater Wednesday as he placed his hands and feet in cement. "It's long overdue," said crony James Caan, who had co-starred with Duvall in The Godfather and wished he had made 25 more films with him. Andy Garcia and Billy Bob Thornton also lent their support to their friend and mentor, who they consider to be more than actor, but an artist. They recalled talking with him about horses, the mambo and the tango, and lately, meat. Duvall, who has been acting for 50 years, thanked his friends and his wife, Luciana Pedraza, recalling his old pal Wilford Brimley telling him, as he was falling in love with ...

Robert Duvall had the cast and crew on new movie Get Low cowering in fear whenever they were around him - because The Godfather icon was an intimidating "time bomb", according to co-star Bill Murray.
The actor admits he was struck by Duvall's presence on the film set - but he refused to walk on egg shells around the star like the rest of the crew and tried to engage him in some playful banter.
He explains, "(There was) tension around the set. This guy is a time bomb and the ticking is audible. And so I just remember being on the set and the first day - this guy's very serious... people are just (staying) 12 feet away from him. I don't work that way. I try to be very loose and relaxed all the time. I just started - every take, in between - I was just messing with him."
The Ghostbusters funnyman was convinced his co-star was going to lose his temper until Duvall's wife, Luciana Pedraza, encouraged the serious actor to lighten up - because she was tickled by Murray's antics.
Murray recalls: "I figured he's gonna hit me anyway, I might as well get it over with... Turned out his wife thought I was funny. So that was it, I was done. I kept thinking he's gonna come in with a big piece of metal and take it right over my head. But then she walked in the room and she said (to Duvall), 'He's good, he's funny, just go along with it.' So that's what happened I guess."...

Movie legend Robert Duvall has hinted he is finally ready to marry his Argentinean girlfriend of seven years, Luciana Pedraza. The Apocalypse Now star met Luciana - who is 41 years his junior - in Buenos Aires in 1996 over their mutual love of tango dancing, and now Duvall has hinted they be about to walk down the aisle. He muses, "Why not get married. Maybe we should. I've been thinking about it. I had been to Buenos Aires many times. I love the city, and I've seen a lot of pretty women there. But she was something special. We clicked right away." Of the huge age gap between the 72-year old star and his 31-year old belle, Duvall says, "The age difference has never bothered her. We go everywhere and do everything together. It's like we've always known each other."...

Encouraged by all the accolades heaped upon 1997's "The Apostle", multitasker Robert Duvall again serves as director, writer, star and co-producer on "Assassination Tango", an undeniably inspired if occasionally bumpy ride.
Determined to find a way to put his passion for the Argentine tango up on the big screen, Duvall has crafted a story that is nothing if not unique -- it's part gritty crime thriller, part dance-driven romance, part evocative character study.
While those diverse parts don't always coalesce, Duvall's performance is a fully dimensional, richly robust keeper.
But aside from drawing tango enthusiasts (and acting students), it won't be enough guarantee the MGM/United Artists release a decent following without enthusiastic reviews, and those notices will likely be as mixed as the picture's various components.
Duvall's John J. is definitely a colorful bit of business. A paranoid hit man with a short fuse and a loving devotion to the young daughter Katherine Micheaux Miller) of his girlfriend, Maggie (Kathy Baker), John enjoys busting a move at a local Brooklyn dance hall between "assignments" from his boss, Frankie (Frank Gio).
The latest sends him to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he's hired to carry out a hit on a retired Argentine general. He's briefed on the situation by Miguel (Ruben Blades), who explains that the man was responsible for the death of many innocent people, including the son of an elderly couple seeking vengeance.
But John J. doesn't need any rationalization. He just wants to ice the guy, get paid and go back home. Unfortunately, when his intended victim unexpectedly delays his anticipated return to Buenos Aires, John J. finds himself with a lot of downtime.
Wandering into a hole-in-the-wall tango club one day, he becomes enthralled by the captivating moves of the beautiful Manuela (the captivating Luciana Pedraza), who draws him into the sensual, mysterious world of tango.
It's nice to see someone at Duvall's stage of life wearing his passion on his sleeve, but that tricky bullet/ballet balance is frequently thrown out of whack by fantasy dance sequences that tend to derail plot progression.
As a showcase for Duvall's acting abilities, "Assassination Tango" always puts its best foot forward. His John J. is a wonderfully complex mix of tough-guy bravado and quirky vulnerability. And whether the character knows it, he's also pretty funny.
Making her screen debut, Argentinian native Pedraza has an exotic, very natural screen presence as Duvall's beguiling dance instructor, while Baker and Blades do their usual dependable work.
The international flavor is nicely captured by a seasoned European and Latin American crew.
