The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced on Tuesday that Warner Bros.’ Barbie will receive the Gotham Global Icon & Creator Tribute at the 2023 Gotham Awards.
Co-written and directed by three-time Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig, Barbie is the top-grossing film of the year, and the honor is the first major accolade it’s received as it enters the best picture Oscar race.
“Across the globe, audiences have fallen in love with the inventive world of Barbie and its razor-sharp original script, dynamic filmmaking, emotional and hilarious performances, vibrant set and costume designs, and electrifying original music,” said Gotham executive director Jeffrey Sharp in a statement. “The Barbie creative team took Mattel’s beloved icon and turned it into a cinematic tour de force. We are thrilled to recognize this extraordinary film, the creatives who brought it to the screen and their unique take on the iconic doll at the center of it all.

The production team behind Barbie was on hand at Deadline’s Contenders London event to reveal some of the secrets behind the smash hit’s unique journey and what set it on the road to becoming the year’s biggest movie at the box office.
Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed fantasy comedy, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has been a cultural phenomenon this year.
Oscar-nominated producer David Heyman told the audience that much of the film’s appeal comes from its originality: “One of the reasons the film has done so well is because it’s original. There’s a real hunger for originality. Greta Gerwig is a singular artist, she pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in the most collaborative way. The film is fun, thematically rich and very moving. It was challenging, of course, but when we made it, there was a spirit of fun that permeated the production.

Arguably the best look yet at “Barbie” was released Thursday by Warner Bros. The new trailer for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film mixes goofy comedy with some existential conflict while also showcasing the star turns from leads Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
The “Barbie” main trailer opens with the title hero (Robbie) having yet another “best day ever” and a blowout party that gets interrupted when Barbie asks her friends if they ever think about dying. The cracks in her happy facade continue from there before Barbie and Ken (Gosling) are forced to go to the “real world” to find out the “truth about the universe.” Once in reality, Barbie and Ken are faced with confrontation and disinterest as they seemingly must work to escape the clutches of a corporate overlord (played by Will Ferrell). Think “Elf” meets “Lady Bird” meets “The Lego Movie.”

Warner Bros. had some fun on Tuesday with the release of a new trailer for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” The latest teaser eschews the “2001” spoof of December’s marketing material and instead opts for a more straightforward look at the July release co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.
Set to the Beach Boys’ track “Fun, Fun, Fun,” the new “Barbie” trailer establishes Barbie Land, where everyone is either a Barbie or a Ken. Margot Robbie stars as the title Barbie, with Ryan Gosling as her main Ken. But other Kens include Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, and Kingsley Ben-Adir. There are more Barbies too, played by Issa Rae, Nicola Coughlan, Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, Alexandra Shipp, and many others. Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, and Helen Mirren are in this as well. The tone of the trailer is daffy and whimsical and shows off the comedic chemistry between Gosling and Robbie.

A bunch of sequels and a remake are vying for the Best Visual Effects Oscar this year, many of them from Disney, including Bill Condon’s live-action remake of Disney’s classic “Beauty and the Beast,” Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Three Fox films offer stunning VFX: “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which advances its visual effects technology over the last Matt Reeves installment featuring Weta Digital’s astonishing array of digital apes led by performance capture master Andy Serkis as Caesar, could win Weta’s Joe Letteri (“Avatar,” “King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings”) his fifth Oscar. Another visually sumptuous sequel is Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049.” And Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” is also impressive.
