Ridley Scott’s Scott Free has nabbed the screen rights to dystopian thriller “I Alone Survive” after a three-way auction, Variety has confirmed.
Bethany Clift’s comedic debut novel centers on a woman in her mid-thirties who has spent her life pretending to be what other people want her to be. When she becomes the sole survivor of a global pandemic, she has to learn to lead an independent life, free from other people’s rules.
Marina Brackenbury, head of TV and film at Scott Free in London, acquired the rights from literary agent Cara Lee Simpson at Jonathan Clowes.
“I was instantly struck by the distinctive tone of Bethany’s writing, and I’m determined the TV series lives up to the book in its ability to thoroughly entertain, whilst speaking honestly to a wide range of issues women face that rarely get discussed,” Brackenbury told The Bookseller magazine.

Apple is developing a limited series based on the story of WeWork, Variety has learned.
The potential series is based on the Wondery podcast “WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork.” Lee Eisenberg and Drew Crevello will co-write and executive produce the project. Eisenberg is fresh off the critical success of the Apple series “Little America,” on which he served as co-creator and showrunner. It was announced in January that Eisenberg had signed an overall deal with the streamer. Crevello, a former studio executive at Warner Bros. and Fox, previously sold the sci-fi pilot “The Long Park” to TNT with Scott Free producing and Ridley Scott directing. This would mark his first TV writing credit.
Wondery’s Hernan Lopez, Marshall Lewy, and Aaron Hart would also executive produce.
Eisenberg is repped by Mosaic and McKuin & Frankel. Wondery is repped by UTA.

Matt Damon has come on board to star in “The Force” with James Mangold directing for Disney’s 20th Century Studios.
Mangold, who directed Damon in “Ford v. Ferrari,” has been developing the Don Winslow bestseller since 2017. “The Force” centers on corrupt NYPD officers with Damon attached to play detective Denny Malone, who runs an elite crime fighting squad but becomes ensnared in a corruption scandal.
Damon played a similar role as a career criminal who infiltrates the Boston Police Department in Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed.”
Fox bought movie rights to “The Force” in 2016 and set it up with Ridley Scott to produce through his Fox-based Scott Free company. The Story Factory’s Shane Salerno and Kevin Walsh are also producing. David Mamet wrote the first script and Scott Frank has been working on the most recent version.

Exclusive: After Ford v Ferrari landed an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, Matt Damon and James Mangold are teaming again. Damon is attached to an adaptation of the 2017 Don Winslow bestseller The Force, which Mangold has been developing to direct for 20th Century Studios.
There is potential here for the kind of New York movie that was the stomping ground of one of Mangold’s favorite filmmakers, Sidney Lumet. Damon is attached to play Denny Malone, a NYPD detective who runs an elite crime fighting squad, but bends the law so often that he loses the line between good and evil and becomes ensnared in a pending corruption scandal. To stop the city’s long-simmering racial tensions from exploding, he must reconcile the idealistic guardian he still views himself to be, with the corrupt cop he’s become. He under siege from all sides: Harlem drug gangs, the mob he’s in bed with,...
