Warning: major (or should that be captain?) series 5 spoilers. Avoid unless you’ve already streamed “Pineapple Day” And “Carpe Diem”.
Bespoke portraits, fake teeth, Mike’s monocle and the Button House sign… all treasures taken home from set by the creators of Ghosts after finishing the final series. Of the souvenirs chosen to commemorate five happy years spent making one of the UK’s best-loved comedies, one in particular has taken on extra poignancy.
Ben Willbond plays Ghosts’ WWII officer, a character (until now) known only as The Captain. Speaking at the BFI Southbank launch of the final series in September, Willbond told the crowd that his chosen filming souvenirs were taken from The Captain’s costume: a medal ribbon band and military stick, items for which Willbond plans to have a presentation box made.
In series five, The Captain’s military baton was given a backstory that merits the special treatment.

A League of Their Own is looking like a rather healthy panel show. The Sky1 sports palaver has wormed its way well and truly into viewers' hearts, and it's now back for another series with James Corden, Jack Whitehall, Freddie Flintoff and Jamie Redknapp.
We sat down with the guys to find out what we can expect from the new series, whether James is quitting for the Us, and whether we'll see Neil Ruddock in pants again (what do you think?) Read on for all the gossip...
1. They're all happy to be back.
"This is the series I've enjoyed the most," James said. "I just think the shows we've done have been really good. I said to my wife the other day, 'I'm enjoying this so much it shouldn't be allowed to be called work'. That's the absolute truth. I think we've done some really fun things and good guests.

Newcastle United are being heavily linked with moves for two players that were “suspended indefinitely”, or sacked in layman’s terms, by their club a couple of days ago.
The Magpies are rumoured to be keeping tabs on both Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sidney Sam after their respective careers at Schalke came to an abrupt end at the weekend.
The pair were told they could find new clubs following the 2-0 defeat to Koln after the club’s sporting director Horst Heidt threatened “consequences” should they fail to win the game.
Manager Roberto Di Matteo blamed a “lack of mutual trust” which suggests there more than initially meets the eye with this story.
And should Newcastle actually go through with their interest and sign the pair, they will need a real manager to keep everything in check.
John Carver just won’t do.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew was given permission to speak to Crystal Palace yesterday about their vacant manager’s position after the two clubs agreed on a £2 million compensation package.
Pardew’s trusty leftenant, John Carver, has been installed as caretaker manager until The Magpies’ owner Mike Ashley finds a suitable replacement. The Toon are in safe hands if Carver’s record in the role is anything to go by.
The 49-year-old is one of the few managers in the history of football with a 100% win record following his previous tenure as Nufc’s babysitter-in-chief. Albeit, this incredible win percentage came from just one game after the late, great Sir Bobby Robson was inexplicably sacked in September 2004.
The former England manager, who was also assisted by Geordie John, guided Newcastle to three top five finishes, the Champions League second group phase, a UEFA Cup semi-final and...

Sadly for Liverpool fans, the start of the Premier League in 1992 coincided with the end of twenty years of dominance by the Reds: the 1970s and 1980s had been bossed by them, but now they had to sit back and watch bitter rivals Manchester United conquer all that stood before them.
Despite this, there have still been numerous impressive campaigns by Liverpool over the last 22 years. Ok, that elusive first league title since 1990 continues to elude them, but considering their expectations have been lower than in previous decades, they have achieved great things at times. Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez and Brendan Rodgers have all created excellent Reds teams during their time in charge- the hope is that the latter will turn his current crop into champions one day- becoming one of the country’s most formidable teams along the way.

Since the Premier League began in 1992, Liverpool have suffered numerous highs and lows. Graeme Souness and Roy Hodgson both did their level best to drag the club into obscurity during their respective reigns as manager, while Gerard Houlller, Rafa Benitez and, currently, Brendan Rodgers, have all come close to bringing the glory days back to Anfield.
Throughout that time, some wonderful players have represented the Reds. Whether it be commanding centre-backs, world-class midfielders or lethal strikers, Liverpool have had it in abundance. The hardest thing is whittling down all those great players to a single best starting 11.
Who makes the cut up front out out of Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez? Which midfield enforcer gets the nod out of Didi Hamann and Javier Mascherano?
Here is Liverpool’s Greatest XI Of The Premier League Era……….

Since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, Liverpool have never been reluctant to spend money. Brendan Rodgers spent over £100m during the most recent summer transfer window, while the likes of Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez also broke the bank during their time in charge.
Between them and fellow Reds managers during the Premier League era Graeme Souness, Roy Evans, Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish, they have signed many players for hefty fees, some of whom have been roaring successes and others who have failed spectacularly.
On the flip side, there are those players who have ended up being signed on the cheap, certainly in terms of their respective ability, before becoming Reds heroes and, in a few cases, legends.
With that in mind, here are the 11 Liverpool Premier League Signings Who Proved To Be Bargains.

Southampton’s strong opening to their Premier League campaign this season has been rewarded with a duo of September monthly awards. New boss Ronald Koeman, in only his third month in the job, took home the Manager of the Month award, while £8.8 million striker Graziano Pelle picked up September’s Player of the Month.
September saw Southampton achieve a 100% record and rise as high as 2nd in the league. All three teams beaten in the Premier League were also managed by ex-Saints with Qpr’s Harry Redknapp a recipient of this same award in March 2005 while Southampton boss, Swansea’s Garry Monk having spent seven years as a Saints player, and Newcastle’s Alan Pardew (2012 Manager of the Season) having joined the Magpies after being fired from Saints in 2010.

Steven Gerrard is one of the greatest footballers of his generation, there can be no denying that. At his peak he was best central midfielder in the world, and he has tweaked his game to become a superb deep-lying playmaker as age has caught up with him.
He is arguably the greatest player in the history of Liverpool Football Club- older fans will understandably say that Kenny Dalglish tops the pile, while the likes of Ian Rush, John Barnes, Graeme Souness and Luis Suarez also deserve a mention- winning games single-handedly at his peak and racking up 173 goals in 670 matches for his boyhood team to date.
When it comes to back catalogues of best goals, not many can compare to the 34-year-old. So often he has produced moments of sheer brilliance in the biggest games, swinging massive occasions in the Reds’ favour in the process. He has scored volleys,...

Once upon a time Newcastle United weren’t afraid to spend money. Austerity didn’t really exist at St James’ Park before Mike Ashley dropped into town while financial planning was a mystery concept to ex-chairman Freddy Shepherd and chief note burners Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Ruud Gullit.
It was a strategy that proved more miss than hit over the years as the club would often fork out a kings ransom for a throughly average player and lumber itself with a financial burden on a lucrative five-year contract. Our roll call of extravagantly priced flops is so bad it’s impressive.
But among the masses of damp squibs that Toon supporters have had to grin and bear in the Premier League era there are 10 useless individuals that stand out from the crowd as our most costly transfer mistakes.

Ben and Gabe Turner's football documentary The Class of 92 puts Manchester United's treble-winning team of 1999 under the microscope, specifically the six players - David Beckham, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs - who graduated from the club's youth academy and became some of the most decorated players the English game has ever seen.
Simply put, the Turners' film is funny and moving - essential viewing for football fans. Contributions from the likes of Tony Blair and Danny Boyle put the time period of The Class of 92 into a wider cultural context, but at its heart this is a Stand by Me-like tale of six young friends growing up together and sharing many ups and downs.
With The Class of 92 on the horizon, Digital Spy takes a look at eight soccer stories that could make incredible movies...

"All fans can join the action as we launch our new Saturday schedule for the most eagerly awaited Premier League season in years."

As a footballer, Jamie Carragher split football fans, and not quite down the middle. On one side were the Liverpool fans who revered him - on the other side were everyone else.
But as a boyhood Everton fan who became a Liverpool legend, Carra is more than capable of putting aside his emotions and being professional.
It's a good job, as this season he takes on the role of Sky Sports pundit. Digital Spy got in touch to ask him all about it.
Were you always planning on becoming a pundit after hanging up your boots?
"Not particularly. Obviously there's always two options - either the media role or the coaching and managing side of it. I got involved in punditry in the Euros last summer. I enjoyed it, it put a seed in my mind and I've come to the end of my career and it was known in...

Jamie Carragher has joined Sky Sports as a pundit.
The Liverpool defender - who will retire as a player at the end of the 2012/13 season - will team up with Gary Neville, Graeme Souness and former teammate Jamie Redknapp for Sky's team of football experts.
The 35-year-old has previously appeared as a pundit for ITV during last year's European Championship in Ukraine and Poland.
Carragher has played over 700 games for Liverpool, winning 12 trophies in a 17-year career at the club. He will start his new appointment at Sky in August.
Neville welcomed Carragher's arrival by tweeting a photo of himself arguing with his Liverpool rival when playing for Manchester United.

With the departure of Craig Levein last month, the Scottish national football team is looking for a new manager – yet again. They do have the luxury of a few months before the next World Cup qualifier against Wales in March, so there is no need for a panic appointment, which has maybe happened in the past.
But who can they bring in to kick-start a new beginning for Scottish football? Listed here are 10 men who potentially could be the next man in the job.
1. Graeme Souness
Souness almost certainly would not be a universal choice as he is still not fondly thought of by the Celtic half of Glasgow due to his time with Rangers. He does have a great CV though: he captained Liverpool through their most successful period, winning 3 European Cups and 5 league titles during his time there, and then cut his managerial teeth with Rangers before moving back to Liverpool,...

It’s not like the old days.
From roar to whimper, joy to tension and courage to cynicism; Anfield and its faithful have evolved, regressed and disappointed when it comes to producing their heralded atmosphere in recent years.
Where once it pushed Liverpool teams over the line, sucking the ball into the net as it swayed as one, The Kop is now reserved, inhibited.
Quiet.
Often it’s possible to hear the chants of the visiting support, sometimes mocking the lack of spirit from their home counterparts in the stands for all to hear, with retorts proving either meek or desperately thin on the ground.
Players come and go, they age, they fade and they lose what made them great, yet the same should not be said about a stadium. Sadly, in Anfield’s case, its power has diminished, lying dormant. A thing of the past.
Its restoration may yet come with the planned expansion.

Roman Abramovich is planning a £30 million raid to bring Newcastle United’s key duo Cheick Tioté and Tim Krul to Chelsea in the summer, according to an exclusive report in The Independent.
Krul (23) and Tiote (25) are seen as the prime young talent that Chelsea are targeting as part of a rebuilding process to replace the old guard at Stamford Bridge. Ironically this was a move that former boss Andre Villas-Boas began before the disgruntlement of the senior players such as Ashley Cole and John Terry led to his outing.
Ivory Coast international midfielder Tiote is believed to have been a long term target for Chelsea almost since he first made his debut for Newcastle back in 2010 and has impressed as one of the most dynamic central midfield generals in the league. His signing would bring the Chelsea midfield the kind of strength it had under Claude Makelele under Jose Mourinho...

When Newcastle United took on Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League a month ago at St James’ Park and beat them comfortably 3-1, the North East club must have felt like they were in a different league to their opponents. Rovers were completley outclassed that day and if Newcastle had shown more composure in front of goal, could have won by several more. United currently lie joint third in the league, a whopping 14 points ahead of bottom placed Blackburn but the Carling Cup is always a great equaliser, and Newcastle will know that all too well having needed extra time to beat both Nottingham Forest and Scunthorpe in previous rounds, who actually are in different leagues.
With many changes expected on both sides, tonight’s game is expected to feature players with something to prove and a tight affair is predicted. For Blackburn, under fire boss Steve Kean may see...

(P.S. – I am a Newcastle United fan, so as always my match reports are bias and for the like minded);
Unbeaten in seven games Newcastle United go into today’s Premier League match at St. James’ Park with Blackburn Rovers knowing all too well that the visitors have won on this ground five consecutive times, an unbelievably strong record that Alan Pardew will be wanting to put a stop to today. But this season’s game compared to the one last year on this ground when Chris Hughton was in charge is significantly different in that 1) Joey Barton has left, and he completely overshadowed the game with his disruptive and illegal antics that saw him post-match banned via video evidence and 2) former manager Sam Allardyce has left the club, and his tactics forever haunted Newcastle, even when he was our own manager.
And there is a 3) Newcastle are more...
