This Wellington Paranormal article contains no spoilers.
Wellington Paranormal does for cops what What We Do In the Shadows does for vampires: not really much. People didn’t offer their throats to Staten Island bloodsuckers, asking to be made immortal after the FX series, and there won’t be a run on the New Zealand police academy any time soon, even after any cadets learn there is a paranormal unit in some of the local precincts. Hardly any law officer has even visited the basement office of the paranormal unit at the Wellington station. It’s not because it’s such a tightly guarded secret. They just have no interest. The series brilliantly lampoons the entire force in farce.
The cops at the center of Wellington Paranormal are the most normal paranormal investigators ever assigned to cover “extraterresticle” activity. They treat supernatural law enforcement like it’s the most natural thing imaginable.

What We Do in the Shadows is one of the best comedies of the decade. The mockumentary released back in 2014 followed Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, and Jonny Brugh, as a group of longtime vampire roommates who recruit Cori Gonzalez-Macuer as a new bloodsucker into their crew. Now the basic premise for the comedy is […]

Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, the brilliant minds behind horror-comedy What We Do in the Shadows, are expanding upon that hilarious world with the upcoming spinoff television series “Wellington Paranormal,“ which will focus on the film’s easily-manipulable police officers, Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary. The half-hour series will follow the duo, as well as Cori Gonzalez-Macuer’s Nick, as they try to keep Wellington safe […]...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Video Service Corp. Directors/writers: Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Cast: Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, Jonathan Brough and Cori Gonzalez-Macuer. What We Do in the Shadows is an indie vampire film. From Wellington, New Zealand, the film follows four vampires and their sojourns into the local town and populace. Driven by bloodlust, the characters do their best to get-along, while creating lots of hilarious situations. What We Do in the Shadows is a very funny film. But, fans of horror will not find any scares here. Part a lampoon of Twilight and very spontaneous, the film offers its laughs through a series of skits. The film is one of the better comedies to come out this year. What We Do in the Shadows is not story driven. Instead, the characters and their conflicts create much of the action. Some...

Love it or hate it Twilight did a lot of damage for the vampire in pop culture. When the movies were finally over and done with and we were free of the scourge of the sparkly ones, the bloodsuckers stayed somewhat in the shadows, though recently making a comeback with good movies like Only Lovers Left Alive. With that spark of life given to the undead fiends, what they now need is a good injection of the red stuff to truly bring them back to glory. We may just have that in the form of What We Do in the Shadows.

What We Do in the Shadows
Written & Directed by Jemaine Clement & Taika Waititi
New Zealand | USA, 2014
What We Do in the Shadows is a new vampire mockumentary that brilliantly straddles the line between accessibility and quirkiness. The pitch-perfect black humor is tempered by a surprising level of tenderness, as well as some sharp observations about the stylized nature of “reality” television. It’s easily the funniest movie of 2015, and seems destined to join the ranks of other classic mockers like This Is Spinal Tap and Best in Show.
Armed with crucifixes and heavy-duty insurance clauses, a documentary film crew descends upon the flat of 4 vampires as they prepare for “The Unholy Masquerade;” a massive gathering of New Zealand’s undead community. These aren’t sanitized, sparkly vampires, either. These are hardcore bloodsuckers that prowl the streets for fresh victims every night. Each vampire is vividly captured with a heady mixture...

Just when you think there has been one mockumentary too many made in the history of cinema, along comes What We Do in the Shadows. Written, directed by and starring Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, the film follows a group of four vampires who share an apartment together in Wellington, New Zealand.
There’s the sweet-faced Viago (Waititi) who tries to keep things in order, the Transylvanian Lothario Vladislav (Clement) who is not the least bit blind to how sexy he is, the bad boy Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and last but not least, Petyr (Ben Fransham), who is an 8,000 year old vampire that looks like he came out of the movie Nosferatu.

Could it be possible that February – a month normally associated with cinematic duds and forgettables – brings one of 2015’s funniest movies in the form of a vampire mockumentary? When it’s created by one-half of the duo behind The Flight Of The Conchords (Jemaine Clement) and Taika Waititi, you damn well better believe it.
Coming together like the uproarious lovechild of Christopher Guest and Dario Argento, What We Do In The Shadows is another giant leap forward for a stunted vampire genre that now depends on out-of-the-box efforts to make people both love and fear bloodsucking demons once again. Airing more on the side of comedy, Clement and Waititi poke fun at numerous vampire generations in the same movie, from Nosferatu to Twilight, and they do so through a Big Brother-esque documentary that introduces audiences to a group of vampires just trying to survive in today’s crazy, monster-hating world.

Friends Forever: Clement & Waititi’s Pleasantly Charming Vampiric Mock-Doc
That immortal cinematic archetype, the vampire, has once again been commandeered into the periphery of independent cinema, at least indicated by recent examples of decidedly offbeat fare from the likes of Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch, and now from New Zealand, co-directors Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, who have made the next logical step with a vampire comedy as faux documentary with What We Do in the Shadows. After premiering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, the title has gone on to tour fests, including SXSW and Toronto (where it won the audience award in the Midnight Madness section), and received generally enthusiastic reception. But after securing a distribution deal, the filmmakers provocatively went to Kickstarter to establish a wider release platform beyond New York and Los Angeles, which means the independent title will now see its limited release extend to seventy plus cities.

Flight Of The Conchords’ Jemaine Clement reteams with Eagle vs Shark helmer Taika Waititi in What We Do In The Shadows, the Kiwi vampire mockumentary that premiered at Sundance last January and has since racked up festival circuit raves. Clement and Waititi co-wrote and co-directed the horror comedy about centuries-old vampire roommates living in the suburbs of Wellington, New Zealand, just trying to get on in modern society. Rhys Darby, Jonathan Brugh, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Stu Rutherford, and Jackie Van Beek also star in the film, which The Orchard acquired in partnership with Unison Films and Funny or Die in September. Pic hits theaters February 13; watch the new trailer above.

What We Do In The Shadows is one of the funniest movies that I've seen this year. You have got to see this movie when it's released! I promise that you will laugh your ass off. This is the brain child of Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Taika Waititi (Eagle vs. Shark) and they play centuries-old vampires in the film. The story is told from the perspective of a documentary crew who follows a small group of vampires that have lost touch with society over the years, and are still trying to adapt to modern life. I'm seriously excited about seeing this flick again.

Watch: U.S. Trailer For Jemaine Clement & Taika Waititi's Vampire Comedy 'What We Do In The Shadows'
If you're at all interested in genre fare, then you've likely heard the growing buzz around the vampire comedy "What We Do In The Shadows." From the minds of Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the movie has steadily building a fanbase and has landed on a few top ten lists from abroad. Well, the New Zealand flick is headed to the U.S., and a trailer has arrived. Rhys Darby, Jonathan Brugh, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Stu Rutherford, and Jackie Van Beek join Clement and Waititi in this mockumentary that follows a quartet of bloodsuckers who share what their day-to-day life in contemporary times is like. And it's that simple premise which allows for a foundation for inspired laughs via a genre has been well worn over the past few years. Vampire movies. Mockumentaries. Haven't both been done to death? Not quite. Comedy duo Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Taika Waititi have merged these two genres and delivered an amiable if unremarkable movie with regular chuckles and appealing performances.
The premise revolves around vampires Viago (Taika Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) and Petyr (Ben Fransham) sharing a flat in New Zealand, with their fantastical and immortal states deftly juxtaposed with the mundane travails of sharing accommodation. After all, a cleaning rota is handy if there's going to be mass blood-letting on the sofa.

Somewhere in the admittedly fairly broad space between F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu and J. Tribbiani's Friends lies What We Do In The Shadows, a new comedy-horror from Kiwi writer/directors Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. The Kiwis are the first to explore the relationship between vampiric souls and the internet, unless there was a bit we missed in Count Orlok's long and pestilential journey across medieval Europe where he gets wi-fi installed. “Diving deep into the throes of vampire life in New Zealand, What We Do In The Shadowsintroduces us to age-old vampire flatmates Vladislav (862 years old, played by Clement) Viago (379 years old, played by Waititi), Deacon (183 years old) and Petyr (8,000 years old). Stuck in their antiquated ways, they struggle to adjust to 21st century customs, like paying rent, sharing household chores and getting expressly invited into nightclubs. Enter 20-something hipster Nick, who Petyr turns to get an inside education on the modern world. What follows includes a whole lot of discovery: from fashion to...

What We Do in the Shadows wasn’t just the funniest film I watched at Sundance this year, it was the funniest movie I’ve seen in years! The mockumentary, written and directed by Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Taika Waititi (Eagle vs Shark, Boy), does for vampires what This Is Spinal Tap did for rock bands. The first six minutes of this fake vampire documentary have been released for your viewing pleasure. This and the trailer that was previously released barely scratch the surface of the laughs in this uproarious comedy that follows a group of centuries and millennia old vampires who are trying to adapt to live in the modern world. The pace ramps up later in the film, and the gags just get better and better. I’m very pleased that they are keeping those best bits tucked away for now. If you want some...

After premiering at Sundance earlier this year, What We Do in the Shadows next heads to the Toronto International Film Festival, which kicked off yesterday. When will you be able to see it outside of the festival circuit, you ask?
Well, we're getting closer to being able to answer that one as the mockumentary has been acquired for Us distribution. Read on, fang-bangers!
Today we've learned that The Orchard and Unison Films are partnering up on the release of the film, the former handling U.S. digital, DVD, and broadcast distribution while the latter is in charge of the U.S. theatrical release.
As previously announced, Funny or Die also has its hands in the cookie jar, using its social media reach to help market and promote the movie. Funny or Die also now has an ownership stake in the film, which was produced by Unison Films and Defender Films.

The Sundance Institute has released the movie line-up for their Spotlight, Midnight and Sundance Kids selections for The Sundance Film Festival 2014. The Midnight selection has always been my favorite because its always packed with really crazy, fun, and messed up films. It looks like another great collection of films this next year! They include films such as Cooties with Elijah Wood, Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead and more. Sundance Kids is a new addition this year which, if you couldn't tell, is meant for younger audiences.
The Festival takes place January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah, and we will be there to cover as many of the films as humanly possible. Director of Programming, Trevor Groth, had this to say in a statement.

You may have noticed Uncle Creepy posting lots of imagery from films playing at Sundance 2014 earlier today, and now we have the full announcement of which horror projects are included in the Spotlight and Park City at Midnight lineups.
As mentioned when posting the first wave of films screening this year, it's sometimes difficult to tell exactly what's horror-related, so below are our best guesses of what we'll be covering from this latest batch or are films that sound just fringey enough that we'll be keeping our eyes on them:
Spotlight
Blue Ruin / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Jeremy Saulnier) — A mysterious outsider’s quiet life turns upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving to be an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family. Cast: Macon Blair, Amy Hargreaves, Sidné Anderson, Devin Ratray,...

I had a hunch that Cooties (read here) and Adam Wingard’s The Guest (read here) might make it into what appears to be a line-up of eight (there might be some wiggle one for one last minute inclusion), but this year’s section flaunts a more international palate with the latest from Norway’s Tommy Wirkola (sequel to Dead Snow – which showed at the fest in 2009) reps Europe, Taika Waititi & Jemaine Clement return to the fest they broke out of with Eagle Vs. Shark but with a mockumentary (What We Do in the Shadows) that might compliment the inclusion of Jim Jarmusch’s latest. Oceania gets further representation with Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook and from Asia, the program assures some blood splatter with The Mo Brothers’ Killers. William Eubank arrives with a title that might sound familiar for those who hit the fest in 2007, but this version of...

When Sundance announced the films in competition for the 2014 festival yesterday, its organizers noted that they were impressed by the caliber of cinematic artistry — mostly due to technology — that freed up filmmakers to experiment with different genres. No category of the festival is more rooted in genre than Park City at Midnight, the late-night section that specializes in horror and the supernatural, and this year’s slate has several potential breakouts. “The Midnight lineup came together in a way that is about the strongest group we’ve ever had, top to bottom,” says Trevor Groth, Sundance’s director of programming.
