This week, Helen Mirren at the American Cinematheque Awards, the history-making connection between Godzilla Minus One and Stanley Kubrick, plus live on stage with Maestro and Anatomy of a Fall.
Helen Mirren got the royal treatment a queen deserves Thursday night from the American Cinematheque in a ceremony delayed by the actors strike but finally taking place right during crunch time in the Oscar race.
In my opinion, Mirren easily should have been in the Oscar Best Actress hunt for her stunning portrayal of legendary Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, but alas the summer opening (after an early 2023 Berlin premiere) and indie Bleecker Street’s limited campaign budget makes it hard to compete against particularly strong heavyweight competition this year.

During the silent era, Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre was a majestic movie palace where Hollywood’s biggest stars premiered their films. The year it opened in 1922, the Egyptian opened Douglas Fairbanks’ iconic “The Adventures of Robin Hood.” It launched Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments” in 1923 and Charlie Chaplin’s “The Gold Rush” in 1925. Situated in the middle of Hollywood Boulevard, only a few blocks from Grauman’s other movie palace, the Chinese Theatre, the Egyptian showcased all the opulence and splendor that was filmmaking.
In the ensuing decades, the Egyptian changed alongside its location, adding and subtracting pieces of the theater — columns were torn down and a glass facade added and taken away — but the majesty of showing one’s film there never diminished. The Egyptian premiered “Ben-Hur” in 1959 and James Cameron’s “Aliens” in 1986.

More than a century after its first screening, the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard is coming back to life following a restoration process that kept it dark for three years. But this isn’t the storied venue’s first makeover.
Sid Grauman’s homage to Egyptian culture — which predates his Chinese Theatre on the same street by five years — debuted in 1922 and hosted the first Hollywood premiere in history, for Douglas Fairbanks’ Robin Hood. After the theater shut down in the early 1990s and was nearly destroyed by the 1994 Northridge earthquake, it was purchased for a dollar in 1996 by the nonprofit American Cinematheque. A grand reopening followed two years later, attended by Charlton Heston and Quentin Tarantino.
“This is the theater where Hollywood was born, and now it’s becoming our industry’s equivalent of the Getty,” film producer Steve Tisch told The Hollywood Reporter at the time.

Netflix is finally opening the doors to the newly restored Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood this week, and in a first-look preview ahead of its November 9 reopening, the streamer and its partner, the nonprofit American Cinematheque, highlighted some of the enhancements and a screening schedule through the end of 2023.
The Egyptian will reopen on Nov. 9 with a sold-out screening of David Fincher’s “The Killer,” followed by a Q&a with the director. Throughout November it will showcase a 70mm series that includes titles like Jacques Tati’s “Playtime,” Stanley Kubrick’s “Spartacus,” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights.”
Announced today were December screenings for “Days of Heaven,” “L’amour Fou,” “Don’t Look Now,” “Imitation of Life,” “Lone Star,” “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and a new Netflix film for good measure: a 70mm screening of Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire.”

On the heels of the wonderful 2019 The Two Popes, in which Anthony Hopkins starred as Pope Benedict XVI in an imagined conversation with Jonathan Pryce’s future Pope Francis, Hopkins is once again involved in the same kind of cinematic historical fictional meeting as founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, who is engaged in a private debate with The Chronicles of Narnia author and theologian C.S. Lewis (played by Matthew Goode) on the existence of God. As with The Two Popes, there is no proof whatsoever that any meeting ever took place, but it clearly provides lots of material to wrap your head around. That is exactly what Mark St. Germain did in creating his 2009 play Freud’s Last Session, which was built on the 1967 Harvard lectures of Dr. Armond M. Nicholi Jr in his presentation “The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life.

One was fiercely focused, the other accident-prone. They both made it.
The careers of Rob Lowe and Tom Cruise first collided exactly 40 years ago when the two very young but ambitious actors showed up at an Oklahoma location to assume their roles in The Outsiders, directed by Francis Coppola.
Although thrilled by the opportunity, they didn’t exactly click: Asked to share hotel rooms, Cruise had his agent demand a single because the actor wanted to study his script each night. Lowe found another roommate for camaraderie.
On opening night, Lowe angrily discovered most of his scenes had been cut while Cruise’s had survived. It was an ominous portent because Cruise soon moved on to hits like Risky Business and Top Gun. Lowe struggled with early disappointments like Class and Masquerade.

Ed Pressman was cool. And he had taste. He didn’t care what other people thought of a given project. If he thought it was cool, that was enough. He kept his own counsel; he was quiet. But if he wanted something, he let you know. He was not one to take no for an answer.
This helps to explain how he came to produce some 80 films over the decades. And he had not slowed down in recent years. When Ed and his son Sam came to IndieWire’s Cannes party two years ago, Ed found a quiet corner and worked his phone. Pressman died January 17 of respiratory failure, at age 79.

Even though we were right in the heart of Beverly Hills for last night’s American Cinematheque Awards tribute to Ryan Reynolds, you would be forgiven if you thought somehow you had been transported from the Beverly Hilton International Ballroom to Canada. Judging from these proceedings, Reynolds just may be the hottest import ever to come across the border.
Numerous presenters and participants, notably Reynolds’ very pregnant wife Blake Lively (they have three daughters with another child on the way) made mention of the fact that the star of Deadpool, Free Guy, and other hits has never ventured far from where he really considers “home” and that is his native Canada, and she added he is the first Canadian recipient of the award in its 36 years of existence. I can’t remember the last time I sat at a Hollywood tribute like this one and felt compelled to stand and...

Jason Blum and Blumhouse will be honored by the American Cinematheque this year with the 2022 Power of Cinema Award. Blum, the founder and CEO of Blumhouse, has been a pioneer in making hit genre films at a practical price while also collaborating on prestige Oscar- and Emmy- winning projects like “Whiplash” and “The Normal Heart.”
“It was a real honor and surprise to get the email from Rick Nicita,” Blum tells Variety. “I had to read it a couple of times to get the impact. It forced me to reflect on all of the movies we’ve made and the directors we’ve had the good fortune to work with, and that’s meaningful. When you’re in it, you can just get lost in the day to day, moving from project to project, but it’s nice moments like this that force you to look up and reflect on...

Ryan Reynolds recently took a year off from acting, but he’s ending 2022 with a bang. On Nov. 18, audiences will be able to see him opposite Will Ferrell in Spirited when the original holiday musical that’s loosely based on A Christmas Carol debuts on Apple TV+ following a limited theatrical run. He’s also shooting the John Krasinski-directed comedy If for Paramount. And on Nov. 17, Reynolds will become the 36th recipient of the prestigious American Cinematheque Award.
He’s certainly earned the top honor. The actor’s movies have amassed north of 5 billion at the global box office, led by the Deadpool franchise. Reynolds has starred in and produced one of the biggest theatrical hits of the pandemic era, 20th Century’s Free Guy, which grossed north of 331 million in the summer of 2021 (he played a key role in the marketing...

An upbeat crowd of film-industry worthies got off their couches and traded their sweatpants for formal wear to fill the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Thursday evening to see Scarlett Johansson feted at the 35th Annual American Cinematheque Awards.
If the ongoing pandemic led to properly cautious protocols and the complications of slowly reopening cinemas went almost wholly unmentioned, the evening displayed a peaceful near-lassitude rather than the typical gala’s Hooray for Hollywood ethos. After all, it’s been just a few weeks since Johansson won a significant skirmish with Disney and Marvel to get her proper payday for the “Black Widow” vehicle doomed by lockdown to underpay her what should have been a bounteous backend share of the box office. (Johansson’s CAA agent Bryan Lourd — his former agency partner Rick Nicita chairs the Cinematheque Board — was in great spirits at the star’s table.)

Few actors have dominated movie screens in quite the same fashion as Scarlett Johansson, who will receive the 35th annual American Cinematheque Award on Nov. 18. The American Cinematheque will be honoring Participant Media with its inaugural Power of Cinema Award.
Able to bounce back and forth between massive worldwide blockbusters and critically acclaimed independent productions, the Oscar-nominated Johansson landed Academy consideration for 2019’s “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit,” and has cemented herself as one of the most iconic women on the screen, making her a natural fit for the honor. Upcoming is the animated “Sing 2” in which she voices Ash, the female crested porcupine, one of the main characters of the toon.
Having done comedy, romance, action-spectacle, and nearly everything else in between, she never pigeonholed herself into one genre, opening herself up to various cinematic possibilities.

Scarlett Johansson, whose long-awaited solo Marvel movie Black Widow finally hits theaters and Disney+ next month, is being feted this fall as the 35th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award. After going with a virtual presentation last year for 2020 honoree Spike Lee, the organization’s marquee event returns to normalcy, with its November 18 ceremony taking place at the Beverly Hilton where it was held last in 2019, when Charlize Theron was the recipient.
The event is an annual fundraiser for the nonprofit organization that continues its year-round programming at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica and Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. After a year-plus shutdown due to the pandemic, the Aero just reopened June 10. The Egyptian, now under the purview of Netflix, is undergoing renovations before reopening as a venue both Netflix and American Cinematheque (on the weekends) will be using for their programming.

Spike Lee is being honored with the American Cinematheque Award, and it undoubtedly encapsulates the director’s nearly five decades of artistic achievement. The award will be presented Jan. 14 in a virtual ceremony. “It’s a recognition of the body of work, and I’ve been putting in the work since the fall of 1979,” says Lee.
Previous American Cinematheque Award honorees include Amy Adams (2017), Bradley Cooper (2018) and Charlize Theron (2019).
After graduating from Morehouse College, Lee attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in the graduate film program. Spike Lee will receive the American Cinematheque Award and will be honored during a virtual tribute on Jan. 14, 2021.
American Cinematheque chair Rick Nicita said the legendary director always keeps his finger on the pulse of society.
“As a cultural arts organization that celebrates the importance of film in our society, Spike Lee is the perfect choice for the Cinematheque’s annual award,” Nicita said. “Spike’s ability to perceive and depict the tone of contemporary society is shown in his movies, ranging from ‘Do the Right Thing,’ ‘She’s Gotta Have It,’ ‘Malcolm X’ and ‘BlacKkKlansman’ to name only a few. He continues his outstanding output with this year’s ‘Da 5 Bloods’ and ‘American Utopia.’ We look forward with great anticipation to where he will next shine his light.”
“BlacKkKlansman,” which Lee co-wrote and directed, won the Academy Award for adapted screenplay. He was also nominated for an Oscar for directing and producing “BlacKkKlansman.

Gibson moved to APA to join president Jim Osborne, who started his career as one of iconic ICM agent Ed Limato’s protege assistants. Limato was Gibson’s agent forever. Gibson went with Limato to WME but parted company with the agency after Limato died, in the wake of controversial comments the actor/director made at a troubled period in his life. Faced with over $8 million in essential renovations at the Egyptian Theatre, the American Cinematheque faced closing the historic Hollywood movie palace and ceasing to exist as an organization. And then, Netflix bought the theater.
That was the blunt assessment offered by Cinematheque president Mark Badagliacca in recent letters to the California Attorney General’s office, through which the Cinematheque sought sale approval — technically, non-opposition — in accordance with state law.
“Your approval of the proposed transaction is fundamental to the long-term viability of the Cinematheque as a charitable organization,” Badagliacca wrote March 12. “Without the Egyptian Theatre, AC will be unable to continue its charitable purpose, and it will likely dissolve altogether.”
The correspondence, which IndieWire obtained through public records requests, are part of some 500 pages of documents that pull back the curtain on previously unpublicized details of the unusual deal between Netflix and the American Cinematheque. Announced last month, it allows...

Netflix now owns one of Hollywood Boulevard’s historic gems, the Egyptian Theatre. Officially, seller American Cinematheque is cheering the move as one that will help continue the preservation of the silent-era movie palace. But critics are raising concerns that the property — originally gifted to the nonprofit by the city — will now be subjected to the whims of a corporation after the sale, which was completed with minimal public input.
Netflix shared the news in a press release Friday. The sale, the amount of which was not disclosed, will allow the American Cinematheque to autonomously program the theater Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, while Netflix will pay for renovations, including sound upgrades, and use the space for special events, screenings, and premieres during the week.
The sale comes amid years of financial struggles for the Cinematheque. Chairman Rick Nicita told the Los Angeles Times the organization was quickly approaching a “crisis point.

Netflix officially closed their deal to acquire the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard and will team with the venue’s nonprofit American Cinematheque. Deadline first broke the news last August of the streamer’s interest in the Sid Grauman built venue.
The American Cinematheque organization, established in 1984 will remain a non-profit, with the organization’s curation team intact, and along with Netflix will continue to expand the cinema’s movie and event programming. Netflix will invest in the theatre’s renovation and will use the revitalized space for special events, screenings and premieres during the week. The Cinematheque will continue to program and operate a second historic theater, the Aero in Santa Monica.
“The Egyptian Theatre is an incredible part of Hollywood history and has been treasured by the Los Angeles film community for nearly a century,” said Scott Stuber, head of Netflix Films. “We’re honored to partner with...

Netflix and the American Cinematheque are partnering on a deal to invest in the restoration of the historic, century-old Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, the two groups announced Friday.
TheWrap reported in April 2019 that Netflix was in early talks to buy the Egyptian Theatre from American Cinematheque, and the deal has now closed, though it was reported at the time the deal is part of an effort to restore the cinema and not expand to brick and mortar theater operations.
Netflix will invest in the theater’s renovation and will use the space for events, screenings and premieres during the week, while the non-profit film organization American Cinematheque will continue to curate its movie program on the weekends. The announcement says that the partnership will allow American Cinematheque to expand the scope of its event programming, festivals and educational outreach.
