Mindshow, a CG animation production company, has raised an additional $10 million in funding to expand its content pipeline.
With the new funding, led by SWaN & Legend Venture Partners, MindShow has raised more than $25 million in total. Sugar23, the management production and creative platform founded in Michael Sugar, also participated in the fundraise.
The company’s proprietary animation efforts, used recently on Mattel’s “Enchantimals” series, merge video game technology, visual effects and machine learning. The results produce high-quality graphics in record time.
“We are thrilled at what the team at Mindshow has accomplished over the past year, even more so in light of the challenges 2020 brought to all of us,” said Fred Schaufeld, the SWaN and Legend co-founder. “We couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come in this next chapter of the company’s growth.”

In Smallfoot Migo (Channing Tatum), a big-hearted Yeti, learns that the myths he’s be raised believing are false when he discovers a mysterious “smallfoot”, actually a human TV host (James Corden) desperately in need of a comeback.
Warner Bros.’ Smallfoot is as charming, inconsequential and uplifting as you may imagine any animated musical is today. It broods charm and charisma to an almost sickly extent, albeit perfectly adequate for its target audience. Filled with charming and satisfying musical numbers that are undeniably effective. Creating a warm and engaging atmosphere to the proceedings that unfold, yet the film itself,...

‘Roma,’ Alfonso Cuaron‘s nostalgic ode to his ’70s childhood in Mexico City, won over the 84-member Alliance of Women Film Journalists — including me. The stunning black-and-white Netflix release pocketed five Eda wins: Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Non-English Film, Best Editing and Best Director. Coming in second were those cutthroat royals in “The Favourite” with four wins, including Olivia Colman as Best Actress.
The all-female group’s 12th annual competition once again salutes the best – and some of the worst – in the world of film with 25 categories in three sections. There are the general Best of Awards, Female Focus Awards and Eda Special Mention Awards whose nominees are picked by those Awfj members who send in a nominating ballot. There is room for the good, including Viola Davis of “Widows” receiving the “Actress Defying Age and Ageism Award,” and the bad, as in Jennifer Lawrence of “Red Sparrow,” who...

Even though it’s only October, it’s officially the start of the festive cinema season that makes long winter evenings more manageable. Smallfoot – a word play on the legend of Bigfoot, the abominable snowman or yeti – is one such family contender, ready for half-term viewing.
This animated musical tale from co-directors Karey Kirkpatrick and Jason Reisig sets the snowy scene in a yeti world high above the clouds, but not too far from our own, with some younger residents possessing the same hopes, dreams and ambitions. The human or ‘Smallfoot’ is the great mystery for the yetis to uncover, as well as a taboo subject.
It takes Migo (voiced by Channing Tatum) to break with tradition and start the ball rolling, after encountering a plane crash and a human falling through the cloud bank. What follows wakes the explorer in the yeti and his contemporaries to discover the truth about mankind,...

‘Ladies in Black.’
While children’s and family titles understandably are dominating ticket sales during the school vacation, Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black looked smart in its second weekend.
Universal’s comedy Night School opened reasonably well considering the African-American cast led by Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish aren’t big stars here, while Sony’s Ice Age adventure Alpha was frozen out by the competition despite glowing reviews.
Palace’s French drama Custody fared best among the limited releases while Transmission’s Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot and Icon’s feature doc McKellen: Playing the Part had modest debuts.
Benjamin Gilmour’s Jirga began a platform release at nine screens, posting solid figures at the Cinema Nova, Hayden Orpheum and Luna Leederville. (See separate story).
The top 20 titles raked in $15.8 million from Thursday through Monday, up 16 per cent on the same frame last week,...

While yucks haven’t translated into bucks at the box office for quite some time, the comedy genre is expected to come alive this weekend with Universal’s PG-13 rated Malcolm D. Lee-directed feature Night School which is set to ace a $30M-plus opening; the highest debut for a comedy, well, since last July’s Girls Trip ($31.2M) which was also directed by Lee and repped a record debut for the director at the B.O.
When it comes to comedy stars, moviegoers like a discovery, and that’s Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish and she’s paired with one of the few box office stars who can actually still make it work on the big screen, Kevin Hart.
That pop for comedies is also a boost for this September’s turnstiles which is shaping up to be the second-best ever with an estimated U.S./Canada gross of...

It might be hyperbolic to call Smallfoot the most dangerous film of the year, but it wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. Yes, there’s a wholesome message at the back of what Karey Kirkpatrick (who co-directed with Jason Reisig and co-wrote with Clare Sera from a previous script that itself was based on Sergio Pablos’ book Yeti Tracks) has put onscreen, but it’s not difficult to misconstrue its meaning if you’re motivated to do so. Ask him and he’ll say it’s a story about not lying to those you love to “protect” them from external oppression because that itself is oppression. And it’s also about a community of bigfoots finding common ground with a community of smallfoots despite long-standing historical acrimony. Is this starting to sound familiar?
On its surface Smallfoot stars a genial yeti named Migo (Channing Tatum) who believes his life is perfect.

The Academy’s 90th Sci-Tech Awards Saturday at the Beverly Wilshire (hosted by Sir Patrick Stewart) was dominated by the integral animation and visual effects software that powers the industry’s CG characters, simulations, and compositing. Digital Domain, DreamWorks, Industrial Light & Magic, Pixar, and Rhythm & Hues were among the 10 standout honorees.
In addition, visual effects technologist Jonathan Erland received the Gordon E. Sawyer Award (an Oscar statuette) for his technological contributions. Erland worked at Ilm as a model builder for “Star Wars” in 1977 and later moved over to Apogee to work on “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.” He eventually became director of R&D for Apogee, where he received patents for a reverse blue-screen traveling matte process, the Blue-Max flux projector, and a method for making front projection screens.
Erland also played a key role in establishing a separate visual effects Academy branch in 1995. He received the Academy’s John A.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.
