His parents, Mihran and Zevart Chorebanian, were refugees who fled from the Armenian Genocide in Turkey in 1915, making their way to the United States, where they settled in New England.
He graduated from Dartmouth in 1951.
He joined the United States Army after graduating from college. He served with the military for 23 years.
