In typical Neil Young fashion, virtually nothing was revealed about his 2024 U.S. tour before it kicked off Wednesday night at San Diego’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, other than the fact he’d be backed by Crazy Horse, and that Micah Nelson would be taking over guitar duties from Nils Lofgren. Would he pull a Greendale and debut an entire rock opera nobody had ever heard? Would he focus the set around the three new studio albums he cut with Crazy Horse between 2019 and 2022? Might he...

In any given year, many Hot Docs entries are reserved for films about people fighting the good fight against a sometimes apathetic, and sometimes cruel system that are guilty of oppression in one way, shape or form. In some respects, Everyday Rebellion is like a highlight reel of every major protest over the last few years, including all the hits like Occupy Wall Street, the Arab Spring and the Ukraine. The “in” for this movie is the idea that inventive and grassroots non-violent protest can change the world for the better, and is more beneficial than the more violent, bloodshed variety of change. There’s definitely something to that, but the message is murky because quite obviously, the small actions by the people profiled here aren’t moving the needle very much.

It took 17 years for former Louisiana Criminal Investigations Division detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart to reach the brink of solving the case of their lives and put an end to its sprawling, infecting darkness. And it took just two short months and seven episodes for the growing legion of True Detective fanatics to get whipped into an obsessive frenzy to see where the many clues unearthed by Cohle and Hart take them. As we head toward Sunday night’s finale, let’s take a detailed look at the evidence to see which perpetrator or, more likely, perpetrators may still be waiting for Rust and Cohle at the end of their long road.Of course, some unambiguously complicit parties, such as the slippery, heinous-videotape-having Reverend Billy Lee Tuttle (played by Jay O. Sanders) and those meth-cooking, child-molesting cousins Reggie and Dewall Ledoux (actors Charles Halford and the awesomely named Olafur Darri Olaffson,...

This week's comedy news
Woody Allen has been talking to the New York Times about his desire to make a film with standup comic Louis Ck. The latter has a small role in Allen's forthcoming feature Blue Jasmine, but the part isn't "commensurate with his talent", says Allen. "[So] when I finished this picture, I went into my room and thought, what would be a fun picture? My first thought was: can I come up with something that I could do with Louis Ck? … Some day, I will get something that we could do together, because I do think it would be fun. I'm such a great fan of his."

We’re recreating Shock Theater at Horrorhound Weekend March 24th complete with Horror hosts and a Super-8 twist. The original Shock Theater was a package of 52 classic horror films from the Golden Age of Universal Studios that were released to television in 1957, sparking the monster kid craze as well as the launching of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. Shock Theater was usually broadcast late at night and introduced by a costumed host who would occasionally interrupt the movie with bad monster puns. Zacherly, Ghoulardi, and Vampira were the most famous of these but there were many local hosts as well.

On Saturday March 24th at the Horrorhound Weekend in Columbus Ohio we’re presenting Super-8 Shock Theater a 4-Hour (!) show of films from the original Shock Theater package screened in condensed form on Super-8 Sound film. The films are abridged version of the classic...

Occupy Wall Street descended upon Broadway Friday night, commencing a daylong occupation of Times Square. The move to New York's theater district is meant to be a show of creative resistance, with a series of street performances and speeches that symbolize the people "taking back the stage" -- in other words, the public spaces that belong to them.
Occupy Broadway's statement lays out their objective:
Occupy Broadway is a symbolic attempt to regain the space of theatre as an accessible, popular art form, bringing it back to where it all started - in a public space, for the common citizen. We are using public space to create a more colorful image of what our streets could look like, with public performances, art, and music. Through this movement, New York re-imagines itself as a work of art, rather than a retail shopping mall.
Friday night's agenda began at 6 p.m., with...

Reverend Billy Graham was hospitalized Wednesday (Nov. 30) near his home in North Carolina after suffering from congestion, a cough and a slight fever, his spokesman tells the AP. The doctors wanted to test him for pneumonia.
The famous evangelist is 93 years old, which means pneumonia could be dangerous, but his personal physician says he is in stable condition. Graham was reportedly in good spirits after his full day of medical testing.
Graham was hospitalized a year ago with a bout of pneumonia. He was also hospitalized in October 2008 after falling over one of his dogs. Graham also previously battled prostate cancer. His organization, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, is now largely run by his son Franklin (pictured above, with Graham). Graham's wife Ruth died in June 2007.

Reverend Billy 'exorcises' Bp while The Tree of Life finds some spiritual support
Reverend Billy rounds on Bp
In these days of insurrection it seems that no institution is safe from assault. Take oil giant Bp, which for the past two decades has been blithely offsetting its business practises by bankrolling exhibitions at London's Tate Modern – only for "Reverend Billy" to come and desecrate the deal. On Monday evening the Rev (a New York-based activist in the guise of a hellfire Pentecostal preacher) stormed into Turbine Hall to perform an exorcism. "Bp money is the devil!" he bellowed. "The destroyer of the Gulf of Mexico cannot be sponsoring the Miró exhibit!"
Egged on by a gospel choir, Reverend Billy, below, duly anointed himself in oil and then rubbed his head against the information board. "For 20 long years, Bp has embedded its foulness deep within the Tate, using the fair face...

Obama was named most admired living man for third year in a row.

President Obama can continue to brush the dirt off his shoulder. The embattled politician was named the most admired living man for the third year in a row, according to an annual poll conducted by USA Today and Gallup.
Obama bested past presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton in the poll. Even though the Democrats lost control of Congress in the November midterm elections, the president was able to pass historic legislation during the subsequent lame-duck session, including repealing the miltary's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy regarding gay soldiers.
Ever since Obama took office he has placed first in the poll; the 44th President of the United States, however, has seen his percentages in the poll dip each year, from a...

Last week there was talk of the conglomerates behind Hulu turning the typically free product into a subscriber-based system. While we’re still crossing our fingers that “The Office” — or worse, our beloved “General Hospital”* — doesn’t go behind a pay wall, what about other sources for free movies online?
Check out Snagfilms.com, a website dedicated to providing free streaming full-length and short documentaries.
The site has a library of 950 different films to choose from, but there are a few gems I’ve seen and personally recommend. Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me is a must see movie about one man’s crusade to expose McDonald’s and America’s unhealthy addiction to fast food. There’s also Darkon, a fascinating look at the fantasy world of live-action role playing. Plus Confessions of a Superhero that chronicles the lives and motivations for the comic book characters posing for pictures on Hollywood Blvd.

- [Editor's note: When Laura Newman joined up our team of New York based writers little did I know that we'd find ourselves in such a predicament. Apart from being a short film filmmaker (she has something very cool coming up in early 08'!), she had mentioned her involvement as part of a unique traveling gospel. Traveling gospel? It is one that I was already familiar with due to a fervent documentary short film on a figure named Reverend Billy that I had caught at the Sundance a couple of years back. As fate would have it - we are now showcasing a documentary film release with one of our own writers featured in the film itself. How peculiar. I've screen capped & circled the interviewee below. Enjoy the interview!]What Would Jesus Buy? is a docu-comedy, gift-wrapped just in time for the holidays by producer Morgan Spurlock and director Rob VanAlkemade. It features Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping on a month long crusade across America to save Christmas from consumerism. I’m a big fan of the Church of Stop Shopping, so much so that in 2001 I joined their fabulous choir. In the 6 years since, I’ve traveled the world, been arrested in front of Starbucks, sung a gospel rendition of the First Amendment to thousands and fallen in love with an incredible community of activists and artists. The choir itself is made up of filmmakers like myself, singers, scientists, recovering corporate types, painters, teachers and preacher’s kids. Led by Reverend Billy and our director Savitri D, we passionately protest the demonic corporations that are destroying our environment, our communities and the economy. Through
