Hollywood’s iconic Chinese Theatre is about to get an internal makeover that will transform it into an Imax auditorium. Imax, the Toronto-based large-screen theater company, has struck a deal with the owners of the Chinese, but declined to comment on the high-profile move into the landmark Hollywood Blvd. property pending necessary city approvals for the project. Elie Samaha, a former dry cleaner with a spotty track record in Hollywood, and Don Kushner, executive producer of "Tron: Legacy," have agreed to buy Grauman's Chinese Theater, according to the L.A. Times.
The paper said that a partnership between Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures parent Viacom Inc. has signed an agreement to sell the iconic theater on Hollywood Boulevard for an undisclosed sum.
The sale, expected to close May 20, includes the Mann Chinese 6 multiplex.
