Role-playing game fans had a field day with last year’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a comedy caper film adapted from Wizards of the Coast’s world-famous tabletop board game.
The movie really understood what the game was about and carried over the whole D&d experience to the screen, from strange-sounding location names and authentic character depictions to, well, dungeons and dragons.
The film is styled as an emulation of a Dungeons & Dragons game session and takes place in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting from the original’s multiverse.
It is ostensibly a picaresque movie, with the main characters trying to pull a heist on a sleazy lord in the film’s fantasy universe, and there are some quality laughs for good comedic measure, but the heart of the film’s storytelling is in following the source closely.
That said, the film is not quite consistent when getting into the specifics.

One of the most celebrated cinematic interpretations of Stephen King is the two-film adaptation of his seminal horror novel "It." Directed by Andy Muschietti, with the movies released in 2017 and 2019, "It" follows the twisted coming-of-age of a group of childhood friends in Derry, Maine. While the seven kids are harassed by neighborhood bully Henry Bowers (Nicholas Hamilton) and his gang of teenage ne'er-do-wells, a different kind of evil festers under Derry. Primarily appearing in the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård), this otherworldly monster instills fear in its young victims before consuming them entirely.
Though the creature has haunted the region since ancient times, the first chapter takes place in the summer of 1989. That's when Pennywise surfaces to claim new victims around Derry while setting its sights on the main characters. Finding strength and solace in numbers, these friends refer to themselves share a bond under the banner...

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a movie starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez, as well as the great Hugh Grant with his peculiar (and marked) English accent… in the lands of Tolkien.
Very nice and with a lot more sense of humor than the previous ones. A film that blends comedy and the most inconsequential adventure genre very well.
The kind we all love.
And, above all, it knows how to distinguish itself in treatment and narrative approach from the rest of fantasy productions so hackneyed lately.

The following post contains spoilers for "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves."
Before we begin, I have a confession. I've never played Dungeons and Dragons. I've always wanted to, but all the players I knew were deep in campaigns with more characters and subplots than a Tolkien appendix. It was daunting to jump in. Before seeing this movie, I didn't know a mimic from a displacer beast, and I only had a vague idea of the dangers of gelatinous cubes. After "Honor Among Thieves," I'm posting a Craigslist ad for a bard seeking a patient Dungeon Master and other rogues to join his party. Lucky for noobs like me, the internet is littered with beginner's guides. Goodbye, hours of my life. Hello, new nerd obsession.

This article contains Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves spoilers.
With Paramount and eOne’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves now in theaters, and blowing past studio projections for its opening weekend, it’s a good time to be a D&d fan. It also seems to be a good time to examine the easter eggs that old fans and new may have missed.
If we missed anything please feel free to drop it in the comments.
Cult of the Dragon
Early on the film treats us to a delightfully narrated “getting to know the character” monologue by one of the film’s main protagonists, Edgin the Bard (Chris Pine). In a flashback, we learn that Edgin was a member of a secret organization known as the Harpers, a fact that serves as a bit of an emotional chord that plays with themes of redemption and destiny throughout the film.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” conjured up $38.5 million at the box office this weekend — a respectable figure given the movie was based on a tabletop role-playing game from the ’70s. And whether you’re an old-school D&d player (like this writer) or a newer fan (thanks to “Stranger Things”), “Honor Among Thieves” includes plenty of fan service.
Classic Roles With a Twist
In the tabletop game (and licensed video game adaptions), players take on different classes or jobs, the archetypes being fighter, cleric, thief and wizard. Amongst those archetypes may be variations; fighters can be rage-driven barbarians, or divine-infused paladins.
Each major character in “Honor Among Thieves” aligns with an existing D&d class: Michelle Rodriguez’s Holga is a barbarian with her favored weapon — a battle axe; Rege-Jean Page is a paladin who is almost comically virtuous.
It’s fun seeing these classes and their abilities come...

The concept of a lead or a singular protagonist doesn’t get that much prominence in adventure-based high fantasy narratives, which tend to include characters from different fictional sects, species, and walks of life. Also, as a tabletop role-playing game, “Dungeons & Dragons” encourages the idea of companionship by forming adventure groups among characters chosen by the players. Therefore, quite obviously, the live-action movie adaptation “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor among Thieves” stresses the importance of companionship by introducing Simon, Doric, and Xenk, who assist Edgin in his quest by utilizing their individual expertise. We will take a look at their backgrounds and the character arcs to better understand what they bring to the table.

Hark! “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” looks to reach the top of box office charts in its opening weekend, besting the sophomore outing of “John Wick: Chapter 4.”
“Honor Among Thieves” scored $15.3 million in its opening day, a figure that includes $5.6 million from Thursday screenings and specialty previews. Playing in 3,855 venues, the fantasy comedy is projecting a finish around $40 million, which would come in around the higher end of estimates heading into the weekend.
That’s a solid figure for “Honor Among Thieves,” which Paramount has thrown support behind with a sweeping press tour and a premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. Along with the studio, Entertainment One (eOne) covered a good fraction of the production budget for the film, which totals about $150 million between the two banners. eOne is a subsidiary of Hasbro, which controls the “Dungeons & Dragons” intellectual property.

This piece contains mild spoilers for "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves."
There's no denying the impact that "Dungeons & Dragons" has had on popular culture over the past few decades. The tabletop's deep world-building and encouragement of roleplaying gave it a particular reputation of being for nerds at best, and being the tool of Satanists at worst.
Of course, what was once considered uncool usually becomes cool again, and D&d has seen a resurgence in recent years thanks to properties like "Critical Role" and "Stranger Things." It has made a similar inroad to mainstream success as comic books, which saw renewed interest once the Marvel Cinematic Universe made the nerd zone accessible to general audiences. Sure, comic book movies had been successful before, but not at the levels that the MCU brought them to.
Unfortunately, since the MCU first found success with its formula, it has primarily adhered...

What do you get when you team up a warrior, a young inexperienced wizard, a shape-shifting tiefling druid, and a charming, cocky thief? You get the four main characters of the fantasy adventure/comedy Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
The movie kicks off in a frozen wasteland where a prison houses Edgin (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), a pair of thieves up for early parole. Edgin attempts to regale the parole board with a tale of how he and Holga fell into a life of crime. He reveals they were charged with taking care of his young daughter and that they only ever stole from those who could afford it and never, ever hurt anyone.
His story is actually a ploy to delay the parole board’s decision until a missing member of the board arrives.

Plot: A thief and his team find themselves on an epic quest, one putting him in search of his daughter. Monsters, mayhem, and more ensue – with a healthy dose of humor.
Review: In this year of sequels, we have something a little different but very familiar to many. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, directed by John Francis Daley (who you may remember from Freaks & Geeks) and Jonathan Goldstein, is another big-screen adaptation of the popular interactive game. The last time a D&d movie played in the cinema was the less-than-stellar 2000 feature starring Justin Whalin and Jeremy Irons, which made little of an impression. It certainly didn’t meet the expectations of critics or audiences. At all. The upcoming film stars Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez as Edgin and Holga, hapless thieves on a desperate journey. The Monsters of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – Gelatinous Cube, Owlbear, Mimic, and More!
This article is presented by Paramount Pictures.
Bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons from the tabletop to the big screen was no simple task, with hundreds of artists, animators, sculptors, and designers from different studios working in concert to make the film’s beasts, creatures, and curiosities look as ferocious and fantastical as they deserve to.
Den of Geek spoke with Shane Mahan and Lindsay Macgowan, co-owners of special effects studio Legacy Effects, and Todd Vaziri, Compositing Supervisor at Ilm, who gave insight into the practical and digital effects that make Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ monsters and magic look so distinctly D&d.
The Owlbear
Tiefling Druid Doric, played by Sophia Lillis, has the enviable ability to shapeshift into a snowy Owlbear, a hulking monstrosity with razor-sharp talons and a head that turns on a swivel. The team at Ilm obviously had no real-life reference to help them create the Owlbear,...

Chloe Coleman plays Kira, Michelle Rodriguez plays Holga, Chris Pine plays Edgin, Justice Smith plays Simon and Sophia Lillis plays Doric in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves from Paramount Pictures and eOne.
So, it appears that the Spring of 2023 may just be recalled as the season of big movies based on toys (I know Barbie is still several months away). Well, maybe not toys as much as games. The Tetris movie is streaming, and that plumbing duo returns next week, but this new/reboot flick harkens back to those pre-video game olden days. It’s not based on a board game (the box office dud Battleship may prevent another one for a while), but rather the “in-between” era. This is based on the big role-playing game juggernaut that swept the nation about 40 or so years ago. Sure there was a big studio adaptation way back in 2000 and a couple of minor sequels followed.

"Let the games begin." Such is the title of a clip from the highly-anticipated "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," which is based on the beloved tabletop role-playing game, "Dungeons & Dragons." "D&d" has been steadily gaining mainstream popularity over the last 50 years since its release, and it's about time that we got a riveting, live-action rendition of this particular fantasy adventure. "Honor Among Thieves" looks like a hell lot of fun, replete with a band of thieves who must make their way out of a dangerous area while battling "D&d" monsters, who display no mercy toward the players.
The clip already proves how some aspects of the tabletop game have been successfully translated onto the big screen. The primary threat in this segment, a displacer beast, is shown using its standard powers of bending light and creating illusions to trick players while being resistant to all ranged attacks.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves pulls from the camaraderie of the roleplaying game from which it’s based to deliver on a fantastical adventure. Game adaptations on the silver screen get a bad rap, as they’re often dismissed as poor storytelling right out of the gate. It’s hard to believe, but it took almost a decade to bring Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves to movie screens. The film has been in development hell since 2013, with Warner Bros. initially expressing interest in bringing the tabletop role-playing game to life.
However, the film later moved to Paramount Pictures. Chris McKay and Michael Gilio were originally tapped to write and direct the movie, but were replaced in 2019 with Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who used elements from McKay and Gilio’s script.
And though there are plenty of references to the Dungeons & Dragons game, the film’s directors said they “definitely took some liberties” when making the movie.
A quick overview of ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves follows a charming thief, Edgin Darvis, who recruits a band of unlikely adventures to undertake an epic heist to recover a lost relic.

And though there are plenty of references to the Dungeons & Dragons game, the film’s directors said they “definitely took some liberties” when making the movie.

Sophia Lillis is no stranger to fantasy, having played the lead in the 2020 film Gretel & Hansel. But while that film had her primarily in a realistic world where fantasy rudely intruded, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has Lillis completely surrounded by the fantastic, both in special effects and immersive sets—and her very own set of horns. Lillis spoke with Den of Geek about playing Doric and what it’s like to see herself turn into an owlbear.
Den of Geek: You play Doric, a tiefling druid. What can you tell us about her?
Sophia Lillis: Out of the group, she’s kind of the straight man. Everyone else is a thief or an outlaw. She’s more lawful good. She’s the one keeping everything together instead of going out of control and spiraling and failing. She helps things move...

The appeal of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign is in creating weird, wonderful characters of your own and throwing them into a wide array of quests: no two games can ever be the same. This is what I’m assured by friends who are into D&d, anyway, as playing any tabletop game with a convoluted set of instructions causes me to glaze over mentally––yes, dear reader, the following review isn’t written from an authoritative perspective as a member of the franchise’s enduring fandom. I have been informed by those more in the know than myself that the latest role-playing, game-themed effort from director duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (who previously gave us the appreciably greater Game Night) contains a treasure trove of Easter Eggs and winking references only the faithful will latch onto.

Rege Jean Page plays Xenk, Michelle Rodriguez plays Holga, Chris Pine plays Edgin, Sophia Lillis plays Doric and Justice Smith plays Simon in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves from Paramount Pictures and eOne. If early reviews are any indication, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves could be one of the spring’s surprise hits at the box office. And that may be due in large part to the film’s comedic tone. Thanks in part to the script by directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. But that’s only part of the equation, according to Regé-Jean Page, who says the film’s ensemble cast — led by Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Hugh Grant — really bring the humor to. Have you ever played Dungeons and Dragons? If not, odds are you know someone who has, and even stronger odds that you know someone who adores it. The beloved table-top game, which was introduced nearly 50 years ago, is just that: beloved — which is why it might be puzzling that it took so many years for the property to be adapted for the screen. After the bomb that was the 2000 adaptation, it seemed like we might never explore the worlds of D&d in cinemas again. But good things take time, and that adage has never seemed more true than in the face of “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” the fantasy-comedy that brings the world of the game (at least one version of it) to audiences in a way they’ve never experienced before.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves isn’t the first feature to adapt the beloved tabletop role-playing fantasy game to screen, but it might be the first to emphasize the fun. In an expansive world where anything goes, directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein pack in elaborate set pieces in an epic-sized fantasy adventure, assembling a Rogues’ gallery of stars to deliver a charming and amusing introduction to the lore.
Honor Among Thieves begins with a jailbreak. Edwin the Bard (Chris Pine) delivers an expository plea to a panel, explaining how he and his best friend Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) entered the life of crime and got caught, separating them from Edwin’s daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman). With the hefty dose of world and character building info comes the humor: Edwin and Holga enact their escape plan before the panel judges can reveal that the pair have been pardoned after all.

Swords. Sorcery. Multi-sided dice. The dubious title of “Dungeon Master.” Tiny, pewter miniatures of warriors, wizards, and assorted mythological creatures. Basement rec rooms. Groups of teenage dudes — not exclusively dudes, but almost always dudes — huddled around battle maps and books of grid paper. These are the things that most folks immediately think of when they hear the name Dungeons & Dragons, the role-playing game that’s turned generations into die-hard fantasy fanatics during their formative years. It’s also gotten a bad rap, since it’s become a shorthand for...

Breathing life into the beloved board game Dungeons & Dragons was no easy feat, as it took the roleplaying tabletop game’s long-gestating feature film adaptation four years to reach the silver screen on the opening night of this year’s SXSW. But patience, passion, and perseverance prevailed — and, incidentally, those aren’t just traits necessary for making any film, they’re also the exact mix one needs to succeed in the playing of the beloved RPG itself.
Drawing inspiration from the game’s unique improvisation and communal creativity, directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein successfully construct with “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”
The story follows the heartbroken and comically calculated Edgin (played by the charming Chris Pine), an ex-Harper who has turned to petty thievery. He escapes prison with his barbarian best friend Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), who has spent years helping him raise his daughter Kira...

We start with a dungeon buried under layers of snow. The camera takes in the frosty landscape; a blizzard blurs our vision. We hear the clank of metal chains meeting concrete floors before seeing the dour-looking figure being ushered into a cell. He is confident — cocky, even — about his new mates. A smooth-faced man with searching blue eyes knits a sweater in one corner. A scruffy woman, wearing a perpetual frown, inhales a potato in the other. Arrogance and unfamiliarity make for a deadly combo. When the new cellmate says the wrong thing, his head swiftly hits the concrete. Quite the brutal opening for a film that’s ultimately such a jovial adventure.

The world isn’t ending. Probably. Yet somehow in the realm of blockbuster cinema and high fantasy, it’s always seven seconds to midnight. Maybe that’s why the prospect of Armageddon has become so tedious at the multiplex? It may also be a factor in why Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldestein’s mirthful and easygoing adaptation of the famed roleplaying game, is so charming. At last, here is a crowdpleaser that actually pleases, and not least of all because the stakes are as small as an evening with some mates going on “a quest” by way of a 20-sided die. Imagine that.
As the second big screen adaptation of the tabletop game, Honor Among Thieves feels about a million miles away from the sinister image D&d conjured in 1980s newspapers and at church luncheons. Really, this is a movie that’s...

Introducing “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” the lavish hyperkinetic popcorn fairy tale that kicked off SXSW this evening, the film’s co-directors, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, told the audience that they had designed the movie to appeal to hardcore D&d players — and also to those who know absolutely nothing about the game. This came as a relief to me, since what I know about Dungeons & Dragons you could put on the head of a…well, I know so little that I can’t even come up with a proper D&d reference with which to spin that cliché.
The filmmakers were being honest. “Honor Among Thieves” is built on the edifice of D&d lore, packed with totems and characters and Easter eggs that fans of the legendary role-playing game will drink in with a connoisseur’s delight. But for those, like me, who have...

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” stole the hearts of the audience at its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival on March 10, no matter whether or not they’d played the 50-year-old role playing game that shares its title.
The action comedy stars Chris Pine as a rakish bard named Edgin and Michelle Rodriguez as his platonic life-partner, the tough-as-nails warrior, Holga. The two set off on a quest to reunite Edgin with his estranged daughter, Kira (Chloe Coleman), and they wind up working with Xenk (Regé-Jean Page), a valorous paladin; Simon (Justice Smith), a sorcerer with an inferiority complex; and Doric (Sophia Lillis), a no-nonsense shapeshifting druid. Rounding out the cast are Hugh Grant as Forge Fitzwilliam, Edgin and Holga’s untrustworthy former compatriot; and Daisy Head as Sofina, a powerful wizard who is more than she initially seems.

Dungeons & Dragons is, by its very nature, undefinable. The world's most popular tabletop roleplaying game is a sandbox built on a never-ending pile of options, an opportunity for creative gamers to immerse themselves in fantasy fiction and tell a story together. There is no defined tone, no set-in-stone canon, no rules beyond the mechanics that allow a roll of the dice to determine disaster or triumph. There is no right way to play Dungeons & Dragons. Every group will be different. Every dungeon master will craft a tone unique to their table.
"Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein probably run one hell of a D&d session. Their interpretation of the game's infinite pool of fantastical options and monsters and adventures is powered by humor and heart, a take that is more "Princess Bride" with big action than grim 'n' gritty dark fantasy.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves contains a distinctive character in Doric, the tiefling druid. Seen in the movie’s first trailer, turning into a beast before diving into melée combat, she looks like she’ll hold a significant place in the adventure – as well as being the “straight man” character to act as a foil against the movie’s comedic tone. Most notably though, tieflings like her are a unique and much-loved part of the Dungeons & Dragons (Dnd) universe. Honor Among Thieves has received a lot of hype so far and looks set to be a lot of fun when it’s

As the credits come up on screen at the end of Dead for a Dollar, the dedication “In Memory of Budd Boetticher” is bannered so prominently next to the title, it could almost serve as a subtitle for the film itself.
In fact, it’s not entirely clear whether or not it officially is the film’s subtitle. Either way, this entertaining latest feature from venerable writer-producer-director Walter Hill is soaked in elegiac love for the clean lines, brisk storytelling and moral clarity of classic westerns, like the kind Boetticher used to make, such as The Cimarron Kid (1952), The Man From the Alamo (1953) or Comanche Station (1960). Even the highly jiggery-pokered look of the film, presumably shot on digital but adjusted in post so that all the blues get filtered out, makes the movie look like something made 60 or 70 years ago.
