Warning: contains spoilers for The Last Kingdom season 5 finale.
Fans of The Last Kingdom may be guilty of confusing our Aethelreds, Aethelflaeds and Aethelhelms from time to time, but we are able to count. That’s why, when Uhtred’s grown-up children were introduced in season four, many were puzzled. We met Young Uhtred and his sister Stiorra, played respectively by Finn Elliott and Ruby Hartley, but where was Uhtred’s youngest son? There was no mention of the siblings’ younger brother, as if he’d never existed.
The boy’s existence was the sad reason for the death of Uhtred’s second wife Gisela, who died in childbirth in the opening episode of season three. Uhtred returned to Winchester victorious from battle, and Hild – who had attended the birth along with Beocca’s wife Thyra – broke the news that Gisela was gone but had given him a son.

It's the end of the line for another Netflix series.
Deadline is reporting that the streamer has announced the upcoming fifth season.
Alexander Dreymon, who plays Saxon warrior Uhtred of Bebbanburg, said in a statement, “Playing Uhtred for five seasons has been a wonderful journey.”
Added EP Nigel Marchant: “With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his epic quest, where not everyone survives.”
News of the conclusion means that Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories novel series will not be fully adapted since the fifth season is said to be based on the ninth and tenth books in the 13-pear series.
The good news for fans is that the final season is currently in production, so there should be some semblance of a conclusion when it's all said and done.

This The Last Kingdom review contains spoilers.
The Last Kingdom Season 4 Episode 1
Back to where it all began. There’s pleasing symmetry between this season four opener and The Last Kingdom’s first ever episode. Both start with Bebbanburg fighting off marauding invaders, both end with our hero vowing to reclaim the fortress from his usurping uncle, and in between, both see a boy plucked from his faith and thrown in with a band of warrior-strangers.
Making Uhtred’s son a devout Christian lost to his roots is a poetic way to reframe The Last Kingdom’s constant themes of family, faith and identity. It took three seasons for our Pagan hero to reconcile his warring Saxon/Dane selves, and now a kid with the same name as him is beginning the same process right from the start.
Young Uhtred can also step into the gap left by Alfred. For years,...
