Ice Spice may be a budding rap star growing toward worldwide fame, but she never forgets her Bronx, NY, roots, where her parents raised her. Spice (her real name is Isis Naija Gaston) was born on Jan. 1, 2000, to her parents, Charina Almanzar and Joseph Gaston - who she's said are of Dominican and Nigerian descent. She's the oldest of five siblings. The "Munch" rapper spoke to Apple Music's Zane Lowe in July about the pros and cons of her fame, adding she's ultimately "grateful" for what it's provided her family. "At the end of the day, it opened doors for me," she shared. "It allowed me to help my family, help myself, and change my lifestyle for the better."
It seems Spice was always destined for rap stardom, or at least fame. Per an interview with British GQ, she jokingly said, "I've been a diva since birth . . . Like, my parents tell me that.

It’s understandable that the turn from July to August on the calendar doesn’t create much excitement for most TV viewers. That’s especially true this year, as Hollywood writers and actors are both on strike, meaning that new episodes of scripted TV shows will be hard to come by this fall unless the work stoppage is resolved very quickly (spoiler alert: it won’t be).
But August will bring some beloved titles back to streaming for new seasons, and some new selections that viewers may fall in love with while they wait for a world in which their old favorites are firing up production once again. Check below to see which shows and movies are making their way to streaming this week!

Key Art for Mixtape, streaming on Paramount+, 2023. Paramount+ announced that Mixtape, a new documentary exploring how the creation of mixtapes launched hip hop into mainstream culture, will premiere exclusively on the service Tuesday, August 1 in the U.S. and Canada and Wednesday, August 2 in the U.K., Australia, Latin America and Brazil, with further international markets to follow later in the year. Mixtape is the story of hip hop refusing to take no for an answer. Before radio play, the internet, and social media, there were mixtapes. DJs were tastemakers, trendsetters and creators of the sound that became the biggest musical genre on the planet. The importance of mixtapes goes well beyond the tapes themselves. Mixtapes were a form of currency and a signifier that someone was “in the know” and had their ear to the streets. The culture was too strong to be stopped, and the artists were too...

Juneteenth, which falls on June 19, commemorates the fall of slavery in the United States.
It celebrates the anniversary of the order made by Major General Gordon Granger on June 1965 that proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas. The order was actually made two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
In a tweet Monday, former President Obama explained it as the “delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas.” In 2021, President Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday.
Many networks are marking the occasion with Juneteenth TV specials or movie marathons showcasing Black talent and/or excellence. See our viewing guide below:

There's something particularly profound about Mary J. Blige holding her Strength of a Woman festival in the heart of Black culture's mecca. This year, the queen of hip-hop soul returned to Atlanta from May 11-14 for her second annual "by us for us" event - an uplifting, fulfilling, and fun-filled experience that catered to every woman in attendance. And boy, did they have a time.
The best way to describe the Strength of a Woman festival is like a warm hug from your family matriarch, welcoming you with open arms for the most captivating weekend of your life. Thirty years ago when Robin Thicke was 16, he recorded his first album with R&b star Brian McKnight. But the music wasn’t epic.
“[The label] was willing to put it out, but there wasn’t going to be a lot of promotion money behind it, so I said, ‘Let’s shelve it,’” he recalls.

But he needed to get back to making music for himself, so the early twentysomething decided he wouldn’t cut his hair until he heard his song on the radio.

"The landscape is beautiful," Justin Irvin Rivera tells Popsugar. The Puerto Rican rapper and native New Yorker better known as J.I. is referencing the Rocky Mountains just outside the window of his Colorado hotel. Rivera, 21, has racked up millions of streams over the past seven years. Yet even as a rising rap star, the contrast between his newfound circumstances and his life growing up in Brooklyn isn't lost on him.

Rather than mountains, Rivera grew up surrounded in a panorama of Crown Heights apartment buildings and city stoops, running around the maze of streets from sunup to sundown and sharpening his lyrical skills at the local ciphers. Even at a young age,...

Jay-Z is widely regarded as a hip-hop legend thanks to his years in the music industry and undeniable talent for rapping. He’s continued to remain a high-profile figure thanks to his music career as well as his marriage to Beyoncé. But despite being in the public eye, Jay-Z isn’t necessarily a fan of being on camera all the time.
Jay-Z | Kevin Winter/Getty Images Jay-Z has been in the public eye for nearly 3 decades
Jay-Z first started rapping in the mid-1990s in the wake of his fellow Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn native The Notorious B.I.G. The two even collaborated together on the songs “Brooklyn’s Finest” and “I Love the Dough.”
Jay-Z released his debut album Reasonable Doubt in 1996. He followed it up in the following years with In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life, Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter, The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, and his seminal 2001 album The Blueprint.

Sunday’s 65th Grammy Awards averaged 12.4 million total viewers across numerous platforms, including CBS and Paramount+, up about 30 percent from the prior year’s special and the most since 2020. That tally include out-of-home viewing.
Thank the (super-)star-studded guest list, including winners Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and Beyoncé, for the bump.
The 2022 Grammys drew an initial 8.9 million viewers, per Nielsen, which placed the show just ahead of the record low reached in 2021. That year-ago show would adjust up to 9.6 million total viewers when including those who watched from outside of their own homes. The Covid-impacted March 14, 2021 Grammy Awards settled for just 8.8 million initial viewers, and would adjust up to 9.4 million.
The Covid Grammys, for lack of a better shorthand term, plummeted 53 percent from the January 26, 2020 special, which nabbed 18.8 million viewers. Trevor Noah hosted all three of the shows; for the first two, he was the face of Comedy Central’s...

Hip-Hop Turns 50. The Grammys Celebrate the Milestone Despite Its Complicated History With the Genre
Hip-hop has had a contentious relationship with the Grammys, but tonight’s 50th anniversary performance was a much-deserved celebration of the genre. The loaded showcase achieved performance co-curator Questlove’s previously stated goal to span the breadth of hip-hop’s 50 years. The Recording Academy has been criticized in the past for controversial award selections in the rap categories, but this performance was a decision that few hip-hop heads could complain about.

Aneesh Chaganty's "Searching," the John Cho-led thriller which played out entirely across screens and devices, was an inventive, edge-of-your-seat experience that ended up being one of the best films of 2018. A father's search for his missing daughter was the driving force behind the film's plot, but eagle-eyed viewers quickly noticed an entirely different story playing out in the corners of the frame: an alien invasion. The film's main characters never personally engage with this storyline (they're a little preoccupied), but if you look closely, you'll see news articles, YouTube videos, and Facebook trending topics about green atmospheric anomalies appearing in the sky, culminating with NASA calling a meeting at the White House to address the invasion.
This week, the sequel to "Searching," titled "Missing," hits theaters. The film focuses on a young girl named June (Storm Reid) whose mother (Nia Long) goes missing, and the story is larger...

“This is me then,” she says in the video, as the camera zooms into her face on the LP’s cover. She removes her hat to show Lopez today with a sexier look as she says, “This is me now.

“It breaks my heart. They didn’t believe in us. They played themselves,” rants DJ Khaled on the title track of his 13th album, God Did. For over 15 years – and longer, if you count his early days as a Miami radio and club DJ – he has positioned himself as the id of rap’s mainstream, a meme-able interlocutor of the form’s pop ambitions. Exclusive: USC Originals has scored its first theatrical release, in association with Warner Bros., following Lightyear Entertainment’s acquisition of its film, Voodoo Macbeth. The company behind the Oscar-nominated Australian feature Tanna has slated the pic for release across the U.S. and Canada in October.
Based on a true story, Voodoo Macbeth follows a young Orson Welles (Jewell Wilson Bridges) and a group of committed artists as they set out to create what is now considered a landmark event in African-American theater history—the Negro Theatre Unit’s revolutionary 1936 production of Macbeth.
With Fdr’s New Deal providing funding for the Federal Theatre Project, director Rose McClendon (Inger Tudor) convinces co-director John Houseman (Daniel Kuhlman) to help her bring Shakespeare’s Macbeth to the Harlem community at the Lafayette Theater — with an all-Black cast. Well before Citizen Kane and War of the Worlds, they choose for their groundbreaking production...

Randy Wilkins connects with Derek Jeter, subject of his seven-part ESPN documentary series, The Captain, on a few levels.
For starters, Wilkins is a lifelong New York Yankees fan, and Jeter was the linchpin of five World Series championships captured by the team between 1996 and 2009. In his filmmaking career, Wilkins also can relate. While he wasn’t a teen-ager like Jeter when he got his big break, getting the chance to tell the story of his hero resulted from a surprise endorsement from Spike Lee, who is an executive producer of the series.
“In June 2020, he called me to check up on me,” Wilkins recalled in an interview. “He asked me who my favorite Yankee was, just out of the blue. I said, ‘Well, Derek Jeter.’ I was very confused as to why he was asking me that. And the next thing he said was, ‘Derek Jeter wants to do...

French Montana is one of rap’s great connectors. He’s known for crafting exuberant projects showcasing his irrepressible personality alongside a bunch of unlikely guest features. On his introductory 2007 mixtape, The French Revolution Vol. 1, he even has a song whose guest feature is credited to Martin Luther King, Jr. If he does nothing else, French Montana brings people together, even if that social butterfly aspect of his persona sometimes hampers the potency of his major-label releases.
His 2013 debut Excuse My French felt fun and wavy in all the right ways.
