Five years ago, with Beto O’Rourke mounting an electrifying campaign to unseat Ted Cruz from the U.S. Senate, Democrats seemed hopeful that the political winds were shifting in Texas to one day make it a purple state. He ultimately lost by 2.6 percent amid a record turnout for a mid-term election.
Since then, Democratic hopes for turning Texas into a swing state have diminished. In the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump made gains with Hispanic voters. And the state legislature has become increasingly conservative with a host of bills signed this year by Republican Governor Greg Abbott that include barring public universities from creating Dei offices, banning transgender athletes from college sports, and restricting labor rights. In 2022, abortion was banned in the state following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) thinks his ruby-red home state of Texas is going blue.
Casar spoke about his 2022 campaign, which was featured in the new documentary Texas, U.S.A., with uInterview founder Erik Meers.
“It was a really fast and quick campaign,” Casar recalled. “I was committed to being an Austin city council member, had been working to make sure that people’s homes weren’t lost during the pandemic, make sure that people were able to survive that time of sickness and difficulty for so many people was working on that recovery.”
When the seat opened up in Congress, Casar decided that this “felt like the right moment” as he wanted to speak about “the really big issues facing people across the country, but especially in Texas where abortion was starting to become outlawed.”
During his campaign, abortion was outlawed in Texas right after the state had faced major natural disasters.

Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland are giving back to their hometown of Houston, Texas.
On Tuesday, Harris County officials announced that Bey and Kelly will be collaborating with the county to create 31 permanent housing units in Midtown for Houston’s unhoused. County leaders will use $7.2 million in American Rescue Plan funds to develop housing at the Bread of Life gymnasium at 2019 Crawford Street, the Houston Chronicle reported.
In addition to the 31 housing units, the permanent housing project — titled the Knowles-Rowland House — will have case managers, peer specialists, service specialists, and support services, including transportation, mental health, physical and behavioral health support.
An “even bigger launch” on the housing units will be announced in September when Beyoncé is in Houston for her Renaissance World Tour.

Houston, March 1 (Ians) A waste disposal site in south central US’ Texas state will continue receiving hazardous liquid from East Palestine, Ohio, where a train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed early February, the office of Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said.
“The Epa (the US Environmental Protection Agency) just informed us that due to heavy rain at the derailment site and capacity limitations in other facilities, transportation of the firefighting water from East Palestine will resume to Harris County today,” Hidalgo said in a statement.
“The Epa explained to me that the residents of East Palestine need this firefighting water to be properly stored and disposed of rather than for it to be exposed offsite,” Hidalgo was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.
The rest of the waste and some of the firefighting water will be transported to other facilities in Ohio and Indiana, according to the statement.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner walked back a story that a security guard at the Astroworld Festival was injected with a mysterious substance during the tragedy that left eight people dead. Police and sources close to Astroworld had previously pushed the injection narrative when the story was beginning to unfold. Several outlets including TMZ had previously cited an Astroworld source.
On Saturday, Nov. 6, one day after the deadly incident, Finner told reporters that one “narrative” that had emerged was that the crowd surge was prompted by an individual injecting other people with drugs.
