Luke Combs surprised us again by winning Entertainer of the Year at the 2022 Country Music Association Awards. You’d think after last year’s upset victory we would have seen it coming, but most of our users thought the award would go to either Morgan Wallen or perennial bridesmaid Carrie Underwood (no woman has won the prize since Taylor Swift in 2011). Combs surprised us one more time by also winning Album of the Year for “Growin’ Up” — his second victory in that category too. Check out the complete list of CMA Awards winners here.

When it came time for Joshua Hedley to begin work on his second album, the polished Nineties country homage Neon Blue, the neo-traditionalist had only one guiding principle: make a record to be played on a pontoon boat.
“After these last couple years we’ve had, I felt like I didn’t want to hang my sad-sack, typical brand on people,” Hedley says. ‘I wanted to make a record that people could party to.”

The 55th Annual Country Music Association Awards held on November 10 ended with another surprise for Entertainer of the Year: Luke Combs won for the first time on just his second try, which comes after Eric Church pulled off an upset in that category in 2020. It was a counterintuitive result considering that Chris Stapleton had just swept all four of his other categories, including Male Vocalist of the Year, where he beat Combs. And it meant Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert have to wait at least one more year for the title. Check out the complete list of winners here.
Stapleton was ultimately the night’s biggest winner, claiming Album of the Year for “Starting Over” and Single of the Year and Song of the Year for the title track, in addition to his aforementioned Male Vocalist victory. It was a big night for Chris Stapleton at the 55th annual Country Music Assn. awards Wednesday, as the singer took home Album of the Year and Single of the Year among his five trophies overall.
Stapleton won Song of the Year and Single of the Year for “Starting Over” and took album of the year for his record of the same name. He also won trophies as producer on the single and album.
“I want to say thank you to everybody that listened to the record, and everybody that listens to music,” Stapleton said from the stage.
Stapleton is also nominated in the male vocalist and Entertainer of the Year categories.
Update: Luke Combs won the Entertainer of the Year honors, the biggest award of the evening.

The 55th annual CMA Awards honored winners like Chris Stapleton, Carly Pearce, Old Dominion, Jimmie Allen, and Brothers Osborne during their Wednesday night ceremonies in Nashville.
Stapleton was a multiple winner, taking home trophies in categories like Album of the Year for his LP Starting Over and for Single and Song of the Year for the title track. But it was Luke Combs who won the night’s top prize, Entertainer of the Year.
Elsewhere, Brothers Osborne were named Vocal Duo of the Year, their fourth time to win the category.

Female artists are so commonly underrepresented for Entertainer of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards that I addressed the disparity last year, the year before that, the year before that, and the year before that. When the 2021 nominations were announced two women made the cut in that coveted category: Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood, the same two as last year. That ties 2020’s mark as the best female representation in the past decade, but that’s not saying much. Women still hold less than half of the category, and it has been fully 10 years since any woman has won the award.
Underwood has never prevailed in this race despite being one of the most successful crossover stars of the 21st century. In fact, her only other nominations for Entertainer of the Year were in 2016, 2019, and 2020. Lambert has been nominated a bit more often: this is her fifth citation...

Eric Church and Chris Stapleton are on top, tied with five nominations apiece. Stapleton is actually nominated in the exact same five categories: Entertainer and Male Vocalist, plus Album for “Starting Over,” and Single and Song for the title track. “No drama, just music.” That’s what an online marketing campaign promised for the 54th CMA Awards, in this year of utter chaos, struggle, and extreme loss. For three hours, we could all forget the “weight of the world.”
Except, in reality, it was less of a return to normal and more of an opportunity to nap in the warm glow of a muted TV — very little of the show rose to the level of something capable of summoning actual emotion. With its jocular hosts, intimate live audience of nominees,...

Maren Morris won a leading three awards at Wednesday’s 2020 CMA Awards, bringing home three, for single of the year, song of the year and female vocalist of the year. It was the first win in any of those categories for Morris, whose song “The Bones” was a smash in both the pop and country fields during the past year.
Eric Church won only one award, but it was the big one: entertainer of the year, generally considered the Country Music Association’s top prize. He had been nominated for the award three times before, including last year, when Garth Brooks got it, but this was Church’s first time accepting the win.
“If there was ever a year not to win this award,” Church said at the top of his climactic acceptance speech. Church explained that this year had mostly been “about loss — loss of life, loss of freedom,...

Despite a shuffling performer line-up due to multiple positive tests for Covid-19, the Country Music Association Awards were held on Wednesday at an in-person ceremony at Nashville’s Music City Center.
In the days leading up to the ceremony, four acts — Rascal Flatts, the recently renamed Lady A, Florida Georgia Line and “I Hope You’re Happy Now” singer Lee Brice — were forced to pull out from the show after either being exposed to or testing positive for Covid.
But as they say, the show must go on, and the Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker-hosted ceremony went ahead as planned, honoring some of the biggest names in country music.
Eric Church took home the night’s top prize for Entertainer of the Year, which came up for grabs this year after seven-time winner Garth Brooks took himself out of the running. “It’s time for somebody else to hold that award,...

The CMA Awards aimed to be a triumphant affair as the first major live, in-person awards show since the Covid-19 pandemic struck the US in March. But must the show really go on? The ceremony took place with nominees, performers, presenters, and hosts Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker gathered together at the Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee, but performers dropped left and right due to positive Covid diagnoses in the days leading up to the event. What did you think of how the show went forward? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Lots of award shows have adapted to the pandemic. The Daytime Emmys and Primetime Emmys were handed out remotely. The ACM Awards were held in separate venues with empty stands. The MTV Video Music Awards included outdoor and drive-in performances. And those shows didn’t have a slew of Covid cases leading up to their big nights.

The Country Music Association’s 54th edition of its annual awards show will look different than all the previous years. For obvious reasons, no audience will be present at Nashville’s Music City Center on November 11th, but artists are still anticipated to be, if not seated together, than at least in the same room. That could change, however, as two scheduled performers — Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line and Lee Brice — have both tested positive for Covid-19. Needless to say, it’ll be an interesting year. Here’s everything...

Musical tributes will be a major component of the 2020 CMA Awards on November 11th. The show’s opening number will be devoted to a multi-artist medley of songs originally recorded by Country Music Hall of Fame member Charlie Daniels, who died in July.
Artists participating in the tribute to Daniels include Brothers Osborne, Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, previously announced performer Ashley McBryde (who will have a solo performance elsewhere during the show), and Musician of the Year nominee Jenee Fleenor. In 2019, Fleenor, a fiddle player, made history as the first...

The “In Memoriam” factor will be high on next week’s CMA Awards telecast, as an all-star opening tribute to Charlie Daniels will be followed during the ABC telecast by individual performers’ salutes to the late Kenny Rogers and Joe Diffie. All three of these tributees died this year.
The homages to country music’s dearly departed were announced Thursday as part of a talent rollout for the show that also includes Justin Bieber joining Dan + Shay for the first live performance of their joint hit from earlier this year, “10,000 Hours.”

On September 1 the Country Music Association announced the nominees for the 54th Annual CMA Awards, and Miranda Lambert came out on top with seven bids. That not only makes her the most nominated artist of the year, it makes her the most nominated female artist of all time. Her career haul of 55 noms surpasses former record-holder Reba McEntire, who amassed 50.
Lambert is up for Entertainer of the Year against Eric Church, Luke Combs, Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban. Absent is defending champion Garth Brooks, who recently withdrew his name from consideration after winning seven times. Lambert’s additional six bids are for Single of the Year (“Bluebird”), Song of the Year (“Bluebird”), Album of the Year (“Wildcard”), Female Vocalist of the Year, Musical Event of the Year (“Fooled Around and Fell in Love”) and Music Video of the Year (“Bluebird”). That’s every single category she was eligible for.

The nominations for the 54th CMA Awards are out this morning, and they don’t include country music legend Garth Brooks as a nominee for the Entertainer of the Year award.
That’s because Brooks voluntarily disqualified himself in late July, saying that he’s won too many times — seven, to be exact, including last year’s — and wants to give the opportunity to another artist.
It was a tweet from a fan that steered Brooks to the decision.
“It said, ‘Hey, man. This guy, why doesn’t he just step down (and leave) the entertainer for the next generation?’ 100% agree,” he told press according to The Tennessean. “It’s time for somebody else to hold that award.”
That leaves the possibilities open this year to Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Luke Combs and Eric Church. May the best country star win.
