This post contains spoilers for "The Purge" franchise.
2013's "The Purge" introduced an intriguing premise: in a near-future dystopia, all crime is legal for 12 hours once a year, allowing people to indulge in their most violent instincts. Written and directed by James DeMonaco, "The Purge" takes the home-invasion route, where a wealthy family unit finds themselves cornered by a bloodthirsty group of murderers itching to commit crimes without any consequences. The overwhelming success enjoyed by the film contributed to the making of an expanding franchise, with later entries retaining this core concept while introducing new socio-political facets to enliven their narratives.
While it is perfectly acceptable to watch the "Purge" franchise by the order of release date, following this format introduces some chronological issues, as later entries serve as prequels or expand the universe with some ties to the film franchise. Although we will be focusing exclusively on the movies,...

Kind blue eyes. That’s the most striking part of the poster for The Black Phone, the latest Blumhouse horror movie from director Scott Derrickson. Filling the poster is the face of the Grabber, a kidnapper and child murderer who terrorizes a Denver suburb in 1978, covered with speckled gray paint. A mask covers the Grabber’s jaw, giving the killer an unsettling permanent grin, while a top hat and wide glasses accentuate his upper face. But it’s those eyes that stand out the most, somehow kind and sad, despite their ghastly surroundings, making the Grabber all the more terrifying.
In that one image, we see the secret to Ethan Hawke’s late-career turn toward horror. After establishing himself as one of the greatest leading men from Generation X, Hawke developed a reputation for playing sensitive and vulnerable characters, given to fits of thoughtful melancholy. We haven’t seen the last of James Sandin, it seems.
Seasoned security system salesman and all-round veteran of Purge night, it’s been announced that Ethan Hawke will reprise the role of Sandin for next week’s season 2 finale of The Purge TV show.
Due to air next Tuesday, December 17th, this marks Hawke’s first appearance in the cult horror franchise in six-and-a-half years, with USA Network confirming that his James Sandin character is featured “in the finale’s cold open, which flashes back to one week before the first national purge and the first time his high-tech security system is tested.” Color us very, very intrigued.
You’ll no doubt remember that Sandin was a proprietor of a best-in-class home security system, though as Purge night unfolded, and the Founding Fathers of America unleashed sheer anarchy on the streets for a full 12 hours, Sandin’s ivory tower suddenly begins to crumble.
