Could you imagine a world where Terry Gilliam’s Brazil doesn’t exist? It’s a dark territory, I know. Would you believe Universal almost shelved the filmmaker’s dystopian sci-fi drama in America before one of its stars, Robert De Niro, rescued the film from cancelation? According to Gilliam, the brilliant director behind films like The Fisher King and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Universal balked at the film and demanded significant changes before it could open in theaters. After an exhausting back and forth between Gilliam and then-Universal chief Sid Sheinberg, De Niro used his connections to push the film’s fate in a more positive direction.
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast, Gilliam said, “The studio did not like the movie at all.” Gilliam says he was on pins and needles during a screening where Universal executives looked pensive and distraught about Brazil.

Now widely regarded as a masterpiece, Terry Gilliam’s 1985 dystopic dark comedy Brazil was very nearly shelved by Universal. But one of its stars — Robert De Niro — played a hand in rescuing it from oblivion.
“The studio did not like the movie at all,” says Gilliam on The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast. The director recalls standing at the back of a room filled with “knotted backs of necks” as Brazil screened for Universal execs for the first time.
Then-Universal chief Sid Sheinberg told Gilliam he “hated” the film and insisted he radically change it. When Gilliam refused, Sheinberg refused to release it.
Gilliam recalls strategizing at the time: “We can’t fight them with lawyers. Let’s go about it a different way.” And so the director took out a full-page ad in Variety, reading, “Dear Sid Sheinberg: When are you going to release my film,...

Jack Mathews‘ colleagues remember the late, great film critic as a titantic industry figure who not only knew his Oscars, but was “charmingly unflappable” and “brilliantly funny.” Jack, who died Wednesday at age 80, contributed predictions and articles to Gold Derby for 20 years. We asked some of his peers to share their thoughts upon his passing.
Claudia Puig, film critic: “I had the good fortune of working with Jack at the L.A. Times, in the Calendar section. He was supremely knowledgeable about film and the entertainment industry, dryly funny, ever-professional and charmingly unflappable. Put simply, he was the ideal colleague and a prince of a guy. He will be sorely missed.”
Pete Hammond, Deadline Hollywood: “So sad. I continue finding reasons to truly hate 2020.”

Oscar just lost his best friend – and we lost one of ours. Jack Mathews – the dean of all Oscarologists and one of Gold Derby’s original expert predictors – died last night of pancreatic cancer in Walport, Oregon, where he retired after his esteemed career writing for the New York Daily News, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and Detroit Free-Press.
I met Jack in 1999 when he interviewed me in his office at the Daily News about my new book “Movie Awards” (Penguin Putnam Perigee), which Jack loved so much that he gave it a whole page write-up! Not only that, but Jack said “yes” when I asked him to be part of a new website I planned to launch that tracked Experts’ Oscar predictions beginning in November every year.
I couldn’t pay contributors. And, of course, media companies would never allow their employees to write for outside websites, but those...

Our Oscar experts from major media outlets now give the edge in the Best Picture race to PGA winner “1917.” Ten of our 25 pundits predict Sam Mendes war epic will take the top prize on February 9. However, seven of them say to watch out for “Parasite,” which pulled off an upset at the SAG Awards in the marquee ensemble category. Only seven still support “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which held the early lead after the 2020 Academy Awards nominations announcement on January 13
These updated predictions have resulted in new odds, with “1917” now in first at 11/2 while both “Ouath” and “Parasite” are right behind at 6/1. (See the individual rankings by experts and the resulting odds.) Scroll through our photo gallery at the top of this post to see how our expert critics rank Oscar contenders in the other 23 races according to the likelihood of winning in the key races.

After the 2020 Academy Awards nominations announcement on January 13, our Oscar experts from major media outlets updated their Best Picture predictions and gave the edge to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Quentin Tarantino‘s fable had 11 of our 19 critics predicting it to win Best Picture on February 9.
But since then, “1917” won at the PGA Awards while “Parasite” took the top prize at the SAG Awards. Those two films are now battling it out for first place with “Ouath,” which now has just nine pundits in its corner. Sam Mendes war epic has the support of seven experts while Boon Jong Ho‘s social satire is backed by five Oscar watchers.

In the wake of the 2020 Academy Awards nominations announcement on January 13, our Oscar experts from major media outlets have started to make their Best Picture predictions. Renee Zellweger (“Judy”) overtook Scarlett Johansson (“Marriage Story”) and Charlize Theron (“Bombshell”) at the Golden Globes for her performance as tragic music legend Judy Garland. So is it a done deal for her at the Oscars too? Not necessarily. We’ve learned from last year’s Glenn Close Globes victory and eventual Oscar loss not to count our chickens before they’re hatched. A few of the Expert journalists we’ve polled say Theron and Johansson is still in it to win it.
Close won the Golden Globe for Best Film Drama Actress last year for “The Wife.” Then she won the SAG Award too. But she was upset at the Oscars by BAFTA winner Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”). So while the vast majority of our Experts (26 out of 31) as of this writing say Zellweger will repeat at the Oscars, a few still think she’s vulnerable.

Martin Scorsese is certainly a Golden Globes favorite, with three victories for directing “Gangs of New York” (2002), “The Departed” (2006) and “Hugo” (2011). Yet when it comes to their Best Film categories, he’s been far less successful, with a single victory for “The Aviator” (2004) 15 years ago. That losing streak could finally be broken with “The Irishman,” a meditative mob epic that’s emerged as a major frontrunner.

According to our racetrack odds, the Netflix release is out front to win Best Drama Film with odds of 69/20. Close behind are “Joker,” “Marriage Story,” “1917” and “The Two Popes.” Oddly enough, it’s the only award the movie is predicted to receive, although it could very well surprise in Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Al Pacino or Joe Pesci) or Best Screenplay (Steven Zaillian).

Love him or hate him, Quentin Tarantino is perhaps the most well-known movie director of our time to never win an Oscar for Best Director. Don’t believe me? Do a quick Google search for “best film directors in history” and you’ll see Tarantino’s name pop up alongside bigwigs like Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. Of these four auteurs, Tarantino is the only one still patiently waiting for his directing trophy. Sure, he won two screenplay Oscars for writing “Pulp Fiction” (1994) and “Django Unchained” (2012), but the one he really wants has eluded him all these years. Might Tarantino finally win Best Director for Sony’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”?

Jack Mathews is the beloved, reigning king of Oscar pundits. As a journalist for major media, he’s been covering the track longer than anyone else (40 years!) and he’s earned the reputation along the way as our smartest bookie and horse whisperer. Jack’s the guy we Oscar pundits trust the most to give us the inside track and we regard Jack, frankly, all of us, with awe.
Now listen to our podcast chat (at the bottom of this post) while Jack discusses his current Oscar predictions and tattles on what he’s seen behind the scenes over four decades.
What’s changed the most over the years?
“There were only a handful of us” journalists covering the Oscars in the old days, he notes. “I’d be able to go directly to the foreign-language branch or the shorts branch and talk to the people on those committees and...

Up until this week, I was predicting that “Rbg,” the Oscar-nominated documentary tribute to the wonder woman who is Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg would win, mostly because of its medicinal effect on our uncertain times. It gets many things right, like highlighting her nearly half-century love story with her devoted husband, Martin, her odd couple friendship with fellow Justice Antonin Scalia and her career-long dedication to fighting on behalf of women to be treated as equals in the eyes of the law.
But “Rbg’ has one major flaw that is simply the fault of Ginsberg’s profession. We can’t eavesdrop on her arguments in the Supreme Court or witness her as she delivers those scathingly brilliant dissents in real time. Basically, we rummage through her closet and see her jazzy array of jabots that she wears with her robes. And we can hear her arguments for her landmark cases over the years.

The Oscars have been full of controversial ideas this season, and they have finally clarified one of them: the four categories they’ll be shunting over to the commercial breaks are Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Live Action Short. There has already been significant backlash against the decision (our own Jack Mathews addressed the announcement here). Now Oscar winner Russell Crowe has spoken out. He tweeted his disapproval on February 12. Scroll down to read his comments.
Crowe is a three-time Best Actor nominee for “The Insider” (1999), “Gladiator” (2000) and “A Beautiful Mind” (2001). He won for “Gladiator,” which also claimed Best Picture and was nominated for its cinematography and film editing. “The Insider” was nominated in those categories as well, while “A Beautiful Mind” contended for editing and makeup. So his career has certainly benefited from artists and craftsmen in these fields. Now the actor calls...

“Roma” may have won only four BAFTAs to those seven for “The Favourite” but this haul included the top prize of Best Picture. Multi-hyphenate Alfonso Cuaron shared in that win as well as the one for Best Foreign Language Film and claimed the other two on his own for directing and lensing this intimate memoir.
Heading into these precursor prizes, his film was already out front to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Mindful that the British academy often previews the Academy Awards, our Oscar experts from major media outlets have been busy updating their predictions. All but four of our 24 pundits are now predicting “Roma” to prevail on February 24. That support translates into leading odds of 4/1 for it to take the top prize at the Academy Awards.
Three of our Oscarologists favor SAG Awards winner “Black Panther” while one is expecting PGA champ “Green Book” to pull off an upset.

Alfonso Cuaron just won the second DGA Award of his career for his memoir “Roma.” Five years ago, he picked up the Best Director prize from his guild for “Gravity” before claiming that same award at the Oscars. However, he saw that film go down to defeat in the Best Picture race to “12 Years a Slave.” According to our experts, “Roma” will finally win him that top Academy Award.
“Roma” has widened its lead and is now the pick for Best Picture by a whopping 16 of our 19 pundits. Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” has the backing of just one expert while two tout Ryan Coogler‘s “Black Panther.” None of the other five nominees is predicted to prevail in the top race at the 91st Academy Awards.
That support for “Roma” gives it odds of 39/10 to take home the Best Picture award while PGA winner “Green Book” has odds of 13/2 to pull off an upset.

It looks like Mahershala Ali is well on his way to winning his second Oscar in just three years. He won Best Supporting Actor for “Moonlight” (2016), and he’s currently the front-runner to win that award again for his performance in “Green Book.” That would be the fastest any actor has won two Oscars since Tom Hanks went back-to-back in Best Actor for “Philadelphia” (1993) and “Forrest Gump” (1994). But this would also be historic because it would be only the second time a black actor has won twice.
Denzel Washington is currently the only black actor to double up. He won the first of those for his supporting performance in the Civil War drama “Glory” (1989). Then he got a promotion to Best Actor with his win for “Training Day” (2001). He was only the second black actor ever to win for a leading role, following Sidney Poitier for “Lilies of the Field...

One of the biggest surprises on Oscar nominations morning was the snub of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” from Best Documentary Feature. But that doesn’t seem to indicate a lack of support from the industry. The film actually won Best Documentary at the Producers Guild Awards, and now we think director Morgan Neville will be avenged at the Directors Guild Awards.
“Neighbor” is a biographical film about the life and career of children’s television host Fred Rogers, placing his work in the larger context of children’s education and cultural change through the second half of the 20th century. It was a box office blockbuster by documentary standards, grossing $22 million. And it was admired by critics, scoring 85 on MetaCritic and winning top honors at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.

With his win at the SAG Awards, Rami Malek picked up enough support from our experts to move past Christian Bale on our Best Actor chart. Malek now has the votes of eight experts while Bale has the backing of six. One-time frontrunner Bradley Cooper (“A Star is Born”) is hanging onto the support of two of our Oscarologists.
So far this awards season, Bale has collected a Golden Globe and two Critics’ Choice Awards for his performance as Dick Cheney in “Vice.” Malek also won with the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., picking up the prize on the drama side in a shocking upset over Cooper. Indeed, Cooper has yet to win any hardware for his performance as a star in decline.
Bale and Malek both portray real-life people, which has proven to be a winning formula for 11 of the leading men who’ve taken home the Best Actor Oscar this century.

“Black Panther” is locked in close Oscars combat for Best Production Design against “The Favourite,” but “Panther” has already made history just by earning the bid. Hannah Beachler is the first black nominee in the history of the category, and just like that she could become the first black winner when prizes are handed out on February 24.
According to our racetrack odds, Beachler’s closest competition is another first-time nominee: Fiona Crombie for “The Favourite,” which is the kind of lavish period film that often prevails here, like recent winners “Lincoln” (2012), “The Great Gatsby” (2013) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014). In the wake of the 2019 Academy Awards nominations announcement on Jan. 22, our Oscar experts from major media outlets have started to make their Best Picture predictions. Alfonso Cuaron‘s memoir “Roma,” which reaped a leading 10 nominations, has the early lead with 14 of our 16 pundits predicting it to win on February 24. Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” has the backing of just two experts. None of the other six nominees is predicted to prevail in the top race at the 91st Academy Awards.
That support for “Roma” gives it odds of 39/10 to take home the Best Picture award while “BlacKkKlansman” has odds of 6/1 to pull off an upset. If you missed your chance to predict the most recent Emmys and Golden Globes, you had another opportunity on Sunday night because the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards looked a lot like those recent kudos fests; the majority of their winners were the same. So why all the rubber-stamping? Did the critics wait for what their awards peers decided and then copy their homework? Check out the complete list of Critics’ Choice winners here.
For TV, there were 17 categories, and all of them corresponded to an Emmy and/or Globe race. But there were only three deviations. Critics’ Choice picked “BoJack Horseman” for Best Animated Series over Emmy winner “Rick and Morty,” which wasn’t nominated at this event. The critics also gave Best Drama Supporting Actor to Noah Emmerich (“The Americans”), who wasn’t even nominated at the Emmys or Golden Globes.

“Vice” is the most nominated film at the Golden Globes this year with six bids including Best Film Comedy/Musical, but according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, that race is really a match-up between “Green Book” and “The Favourite.” So which period film will win: the civil right era buddy movie, or the comedy of (bad) manners set in Queen Anne’s court?
As of this writing “Green Book” has the slight edge. It gets leading odds of 7/2 thanks in part to support from 8 out of 16 Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Christopher Rosen (TVGuide.com) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

It gets leading odds of 7/2 thanks in part to support from 8 out of 16 Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Christopher Rosen (TVGuide.com) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

Is “A Star is Born” destined to sweep the Golden Globes? Maybe not. Though it’s still the front-runner to win Best Film Drama and Best Film Drama Actress (Lady Gaga), according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Bradley Cooper has fallen ever so slightly behind in our forecasts for Best Film Drama Actor. Now it looks like Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody“) has the inside track. But it’s so close that it could still go either way.
Malek now leads with odds of 17/5. That includes support from 8 out of 16 Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets: Erik Davis (Fandango), Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Jack Mathews (Gold Derby), Michael Musto (NewNowNext), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).
However, that’s only a slight advantage against Cooper, who currently gets 69/20 odds with support from seven...

Amy Adams and Christian Bale have co-starred in three films together now: the boxing drama “The Fighter” (2010), the caper film “American Hustle” (2013) and now the political satire “Vice.” As of this writing we think they’ll both be nominated for Oscars for their latest roles, so they might want to keep these collaborations coming because if we’re right, they will have earned nominations for all of their movies together.
For “The Fighter,” Bale won Best Supporting Actor for playing cocaine-addicted former boxer Dicky Eklund, who trains his brother Micky (Mark Wahlberg) for a career in the ring. Adams was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for playing Micky’s girlfriend Charlene, but she lost to her co-star Melissa Leo as Micky and Dicky’s brash mother.

Lady Gaga has been greeted like Hollywood royalty in her first leading role on the big screen, “A Star is Born.” But she’s not the only Queen competing for kudos this season. The Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” is also in the running for awards. It would be Oscar kismet if both make the cut because the band was actually the inspiration for Lady Gaga’s name.
“I adored Freddie Mercury and Queen had a hit called ‘Radio Ga Ga.’ That’s why I love the name,” said Lady Gaga about her moniker back in 2009. The artist formerly known as Stefani Germanotta added, “He was not only a singer but also a fantastic performer, a man of the theater and someone who constantly transformed himself. In short: a genius.” So will she and her namesake both be rewarded on Oscar night?

In the seven years since the academy went to a variable number of Best Picture nominees, the winner of the top prize has not also claimed Best Director four times. And according to the predictions of our Oscar experts, this scenario is likely to play out again this year with Bradley Cooper‘s remake of “A Star is Born” winning Best Picture but Alfonso Cuaron picking up his second Best Director Oscar for “Roma.”
Of our 29 Oscarologists, a whopping 25 of them are forecasting that Cuaron will win a bookend (but only three say his film will also prevail). That support gives him leading odds of 82/25. Four experts are backing Cooper (compare that to the 19 predicting that “A Star is Born” will win Best Picture), which translates to odds of 9/2. Following the Thanksgiving break, “A Star is Born” has widened its lead over “Roma” in the Best Picture race at the Oscars according to the predictions of the 30 Experts at Gold Derby by a vote of 19 to 3 (it was 18 to 5 last week). One “Roma” backer [Andrea Mandell (USA Today)] switched to “A Star is Born,” while another [Anne Thompson (Indiewire)] is now the lone vote for “Black Panther.”
“Green Book,” which did good business in its first weekend of wide release, now has the backing of five pundits (that’s up from just one at the beginning of the month). “The Favourite” and “Vice” have one Oscarologist apiece in their corner. [See the most up-to-date Best Picture rankings by our 30 Experts.]
Although “A Star is Born” enjoys a clear majority of first-place votes from the experts, it is not that far ahead of “Roma” and “Green Book” on our Best Picture odds chart. It leads with odds of 13/2 to take home the...

As more critics and audiences have gotten to see “Beautiful Boy” and “Green Book,” our Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor have taken a turn. “Green Book” star Mahershala Ali moved into the lead, while the former front-runner, “Beautiful’s” Timothee Chalamet, slipped a bit. But it’s far from an open-and-shut case. Voters may be reluctant to give Ali a second Oscar just two years after his victory in the same category for “Moonlight.” And five Experts are still backing Chalamet for the win.
Ali gets leading odds of 37/10 based on the combined forecasts of thousands of Gold Derby users. That includes a majority of the 29 Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets. Ali benefits from the fact that “Green Book” looks like a stronger Best Picture contender based on our current forecasts, and it’s easier for an actor to win while riding a wave of support for a popular film.
