VH1 is expanding its scripted portfolio with Hindsight, handing out a 10-episode series pickup to the hourlong scripted drama pilot from writer Emily Fox (Jane By Design) and Timberman-Beverly for a premiere in early 2015. The project, previously developed at NBC, marked the first scripted pilot order for VH1′s new head of development Susan Levison. Now it is her first scripted series pickup and a followup to the network’s first hourlong scripted series, the Queen Latifah-produced Single Ladies, and summer breakout Hit the Floor. The network most recently had scripted success with the highly rated TLC biopic and just greenlighted a Drumline sequel with Nick Cannon. Sam Worthington may be a big star in Hollywood action-adventures but Drift, the Australian surfing- set drama in which he co-stars with Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel, has had a limited release in the Us.
Wrekin Hill Entertainment, which bought North American rights last September, launched the film at 11 cinemas on August 2, a month after the title debuted on Video-on-Demand platforms.
The Us critics gave the film featuring Pollard and Samuel as brothers who build a surfboard/surfwear business in the 1970s, with Worthington as their hippie photographer mate, a cool reception.
As of today, the distributor had not reported any figures to Rentrak, Box Office Mojo, The Numbers or other web sites which track the Us box-office.
Australian films released in Us cinemas and on VoD platforms have not fared well this year. Mental earned just $18,000 in ticket sales and 100 Bloody Acres made $6,000, according to Box Office Mojo.

As far as the sports genre is concerned, those featuring surfing are about as niche as you go. Only 12 films have ever grossed more than $1 million at the domestic box office let alone found any measure of breakout success. Those that did find some semblance of an audience, like Soul Surfer and Point Break, had the added aid of family appeal and incorporating a heist element respectively, but for the most part they land with a whisper – not anything like the thundering, mammoth waves these daredevils tackle.
But in spite of this subgenre’s lack of mainstream appeal there is one thing they – and Australian import Drift – prove, and that is surfing looks damn cool, especially when presented so slickly and in such a high energy fashion. So it’s a shame in the case of this period drama (which transports us back to the early years of the sport...

Not so much drifting as veering between storylines, Ben Nott and Morgan O'Neill's Drift often feels like a film with narrative Add. With likable leads (Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard as brothers Jimmy and Andy Kelly, plus Sam Worthington supporting as a surf-hippie) and gorgeous scenery, it wouldn't have been difficult to make a charmer about a group of guys building a surfboard manufacturing business. Unfortunately, that's the film Drift might have been, not the film it is. The Kelly brothers are surf enthusiasts in 1970s Australia, when the sport hadn't yet caught on. Jimmy could go pro, while Andy is the thinker who wants to build a business. But the narrative keeps fracturing: Is Drift a sports film about winning the big competition? A gangster movie about smu...

I really don't put much stock in the International Animated Film Society's 2013 Annie Awards, which is why I didn't rush to report on their results on Saturday. One year Disney and Pixar boycott the event, feeling there was an unfair advantage paid to larger contributing sponsors, DreamWorks being the primary example. So with such a nasty stench over the event what good does it do to pay it much mind? That said, I'll be brief in mentioning Wreck-It Ralph topped Saturday night's winners with five awards, including Best Animated Picture. The awards have something like a 75% streak when it comes to helping predict the eventual Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and as the days have gone on, it's looking more and more like Ralph will be this year's winner (see my predictions here). Pixar's Brave, Laika's ParaNorman and DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians each took home two awards in lesser,...

There’s a new high-stakes surf drama on the way, and no, it’s not Chasing Mavericks. Or Blue Crush. Or Point Break.
Drift revolves around two brothers in 1970s Australia who start a backyard surf gear business in order to help get their family out of debt. Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard star as the brothers, Jimmy and Andy Kelly; Avatar star Sam Worthington plays their surf photographer friend Jb. The movie, produced by the Aussie independent film company Hopscotch, is due out in Australia in 2013, with a Us release to follow.

Drift, from the appropriately named Morgan O’Neill and Ben Nott, treks back to the 1970s to explore some truly horrendous wigs and the wild west of surfing down under. This is where the sport evolved from hobby into an international industry. In the movie, Jimmy (Xavier Samuel) and Andy Kelly (Myles Pollard) struggle with family debt, the drug underground and societal backlash while opening up a surf shop out of their backyard. Sam Worthington is the biggest name here with perhaps the worst wig of all, playing a wandering surf photographer that becomes friends with the brothers. The trailer showcases a blend between a sports movie and an Aussie crime flick. Check it out for yourself: Drift is set for an Australian release in 2013. From the official synopsis: Australia, 1970s. The Kelly brothers, Andy and Jimmy, have one great passion: riding big waves. As kids, their mother escaped from Sydney to Margaret River, a...

The world of surfing movies isn't really all that big, and "Point Break" aside, it isn't all that popular either. Remember this fall's "Chasing Mavericks"? Yeah, we nearly forgot it hit theaters and like most things involving Gerard Butler these days, audiences didn't seem to care about it at all. But can an unshaven and shaggy Sam Worthington change the tide? The "Avatar" star leads "Drift," an Aussie drama set on the waves that follows the Kelly brothers as they start a new life in a remote Australian coastal town. New in town, they come up against suspicious locals, killer waves and ruthless bikers as they struggle to kick-start a new business based on surfing, their greatest passion. Worthington isn't one of the leads, instead taking a supporting role as photographer/filmmaker Jb with Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard playing Jimmy and Andy Kelly. All told, this spot looks solid,...

Here’s the first trailer for the surfing-based action-drama Drift starring Sam Worthington (Avatar), Xavier Samuel (Twilight Eclipse) and Myles Pollard (Wolverine).
While Hollywood surf movies are mostly lame and stereotypical, the Aussie-set story written and directed by Morgan O’Neill and co-directed by Ben Nott centers on the Kelly brothers who launch a backyard surf gear business but get caught up with a local drug dealer, threatening their family and their future.
Interestingly, Worthington was content to take a back seat, playing photographer Jb and let Samuel and Pollard playing the leading pair, Jimmy and Andy Kelly.
The Drift production started in summer 2011. Aside from the three lead actors, other notable cast members include Ann Brandt (Memphis Beat), Robyn Malcolm (Outrageous Fortune), Steve Bastoni (Underbelly) and Aaron Glenane (The Black Balloon).

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

The surfing world hasn't seen much love since Kathryn Bigelow's "Point Break," with most pics since then merely excuses to get good-looking actors in swimsuits. There does seem to be one film on the horizon that aims to be different though, the surfing-based action-drama "Drift" starring Sam Worthington, Xavier Samuel and Myles Pollard. A handful of images from the film have arrived, and while there may not be much skin, there is a lot of Worthington hair.

Kung Fu Panda shut out its competition in every major feature film category at the 36th annual Annie Awards celebrating 2008’s best animated movies. The DreamWorks Animation pic bested critic favorite Wall-e and other nominee Bolt for “Best Feature.”
The surprise win is the first time DreamWorks has beaten a Pixar film for the top prize since 2001’s Shrek over Pixar’s Monster’s Inc. Panda took home fifteen statues Friday night and tied for the most wins ever. The Annie Award has matched the “Best Animated Feature” category at the Academy Awards every single year but one.
I thoroughly enjoyed Kfp, but I was under the impression that Wall-e was a better film all around. While DreamWorks Animation has stepped up its game in recent years, Pixar’s animation was exceptional. This is a major upset, especially since Wall-e went home with nothing. The Oscar race just got even more interesting.
