- Bobby Sands was born on March 9, 1954 in Rathcoole, Co. Belfast, Northern Ireland. He was a writer, known for The Rising of the Moon (2002). He died on May 5, 1981 in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK.
- It was he who came up with the slogan 'Tiocfaidh ar la' (Our day will come) which is now a motto of the republican movement in Ireland.
- He died after being on hunger strike for 66 days.
- He was the first of ten republican prisoners to die while on hunger strike in the Maze prison.
