1969 joined the Junge Union, since 1972 member of the CDU, member of the social committees (CDA), 1977 to 1993 chairman of the CDU Göttingen city, 1984 to 2002 member of the CDU state executive Lower Saxony, November 1986 to August 2002 secretary general of the CDU in Lower Saxony. 1976 to 1986 Member of the Göttingen District Council; 1982 to October 2002 Member of the Lower Saxony State Parliament.
