Maureen Sweeney(1923-2023)
During WWII, she was an Irish post office clerk who also recorded the local weather statistics. The readings she took on June 3, 1944, which indicated stormy weather for the English Channel on June 5, were eventually consulted by Britain's Met Office, where they were the basis of the decision to change the date of the D-Day landings to June 6. (Although Ireland was neutral, the head of government, Eamon de Valera, agreed to share weather intelligence with the Allies.)
