Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, which reconstructs the genesis and filming of Breathless by Jean-Luc Godard, is among the recipients of the first round of Cnc’s ‘avance sur recettes’ (advance on receipts) grants of 2024.

Running Jan. 19-Feb. 19, this year’s MyFrenchFilmFestival, an online showcase organized by France’s film-tv promotional body UniFrance, will mark its 14th edition with an accent on young talent, both in front of and behind the camera, and an emphasis on female empowerment.
With a mix of heritage docs like Agnès Varda’s “Jane B. for Agnès V.,” and a nine-film competition that spotlights auteurist animation like Alain Ughetto’s “No Dogs or Italians Allowed” alongside outré dramatic fare, the 11 features and 15 shorts that make up this year’s selection will be available on 80 partner platforms as well on MyFrenchFilmFestival.com, where all the shorts will be available to screen free of charge.

Something you often hear cinephiles proclaim is that “Every year is a good year in film.” Well, that’s obviously true––if one pays attention and knows where to look––but then there are also years that are simply better. To me, 2023 has turned out to be one of those.
It’s a year where the top festivals like Cannes, Berlin, and Venice all overperformed with stellar lineups. Geographically speaking, American/UK cinema can be proud of its output while productions from the rest of the world, especially France, Japan, Latin America, didn’t disappoint either. It’s also a year where not only indie/arthouse films delivered, but (some) blockbusters dared to get smart too. Even the presumed Oscar contenders this season include legitimate masterpieces in the mix.

It does rather feel as if the universe — or at least the French film industry — is trying to tell us something when 2023 has turned up not one but two loose Gallic adaptations of Henry James’s “The Beast in the Jungle.” That 1903 novella was about a man, John Marcher, who fails to fully live his life because he’s seized by premonitions of catastrophe that never visibly come to pass. It feels glumly relevant in an age of climate change, artificial intelligence and other obvious but indefinite signals of human demise; perhaps we should count this highly specific cinematic mini-trend as another.

How do you translate a story about inertia to the screen? And how do you do that when the source material belongs to one of English literature’s most astute chroniclers of the human psyche, in all its intricate mystery? London-set revenge thriller Femme, starring George MacKay and Candyman actor Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, has been selected for the Berlinale’s Panorama strand.
It was among a raft of fresh additions to the festival’s Panorama, Generation and Berlinale Special strands announced on Wednesday.

Patric Chiha follows the rehearsal and performance of a dance piece called Crowd by the Franco-Austrian artist and choreographer Gisèle Vienne, about the 90s club scene. The film follows the dance itself and stages one-on-one conversation scenes in which the young dancers talk about each other and the characters they play – a higher gossip, perhaps, about their lives and how this fictional creation shapes their sense of themselves and their sexuality.
Compared with, say, Gaspar Noé’s orgiastic dance movie Climax, If It Were Love is certainly more calm and less mad, more ruminative and less confrontational. Perhaps what it is about fundamentally is youth, something each dancer radiates unknowingly: a pure energy and abandon and openness.

Compared with, say, Gaspar Noé’s orgiastic dance movie Climax, If It Were Love is certainly more calm and less mad, more ruminative and less confrontational. Perhaps what it is about fundamentally is youth, something each dancer radiates unknowingly: a pure energy and abandon and openness.

Italian director Filippo Meneghetti’s debut feature Two Of Us leads the nominations in the 26th edition of France’s Lumière awards, which were unveiled online today (December 14).
The awards, which are voted on by some 130 international correspondents hailing from 40 countries, are France’s equivalent of the Golden Globes.

The fall film festival season, one unlike any other, continues on as BFI London Film Festival have announced the full lineup for their 68th edition. Featuring both virtually and physical screenings, the festival takes place between October 7-18. The physical screenings will occur at BFI Southbank and cinemas across the UK while all virtual screenings are geo-blocked to the UK, though Festival talks and Lff Expanded are available to experience for free from anywhere in the world. Brussels-based Best Friend Forever has acquired Canadian artist-turned-filmmaker Bruce Labruce’s queer comedy fantasy “Saint-Narcisse,” ahead of Cannes’ virtual Marché du Film.
Set in 1972 Canada, “Saint-Narcisse” follows Dominic, a handsome narcissistic young man who discovers the existence of his twin brother, living in a remote monastery lead by a depraved priest. Dominic sets out to save him and reunite once and for all. The two beautiful, identical brothers are soon embroiled in a strange web of sex, revenge and redemption.
“‘Saint-Narcisse’ is my biggest budgeted and most ambitious movie to date with spectacular locations, elevated cinematography and art direction,” said Labruce, who has so far written and directed 11 feature films, notably “Gerontophilia” which played at Venice in 2013 and “Pierrot Lunaire” which won the Teddy Award in Berlin in 2014.

Matteo Garrone’s “Pinocchio,” starring Roberto Benigni, will have its international premiere at the 70th Berlin Film Festival the event announced Tuesday as new artistic director Carlo Chatrian unveiled the first titles for his debut edition.
“Pinocchio” will play as part of the Berlinale Special Gala section, which replaces the Out of Competition category.
Chatrian, who co-heads the Berlinale with executive director Mariette Rissenbeek, said: “Garrone succeeds in re-telling the well-known story with his very own world of images. Although he is faithful to Carlo Collodi’s ideas, he has nevertheless created a very personal Pinocchio that is much more cheerful than we’ve experienced before.”

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has today announced the fourth edition of Art of the Real, their essential showcase for boundary-pushing nonfiction film, scheduled to take place April 20 – May 2. Billed as “a survey of the most vital and innovative voices in nonfiction and hybrid filmmaking,” this year’s showcase features an eclectic, globe-spanning host of discoveries, including seven North American premieres and eight U.S. premieres.

This culminated with this year’s Golden Bear winner, Gianfranco Rosi’s Fire at Sea, a documentary which was the clear early favorite and remained so up until the awards ceremony. Rosi has now won two major film festivals with his documentary work (previously taking home the top prize at Venice 2013 for Sacro Gra), and further solidifies an argument for the Cannes Film Festival to follow suit and allow documentary titles to play in the main competition. Paris-based sales company Wide has partnered with new ‘film discovery’ platform FilmDoo. The new partnership will see FilmDoo distribute titles from Wide’s sub-label for first time directors, Eye On Films / Eye to Eye.
Initially the partnership is for UK and Irish VOD rights, with an aim to reach out to other English-language territories in the future.
The first title will be Tamar Van Den Dop’s Berlinale Generation contender Supernova, with a day-and-date release from independent UK distributor Matchbox Films. The film, about a teenage girl who wishes a car would crash into her home to spice up her life, is based on the novel by Flemish author Bo Van Ranst.
Other acquisitions include Patric Chiha’s Beatrice Dalle starrer Domaine and the docudrama Noor, about a teenage runaway taken under the wing of Pakistan’s transgender community (known as Khusras).

The rhythms and patterns of her life appear to be very orderly and precise, like -- ehem -- math. Her high heels clack like a metronome as she goes on the same walk in the park with her 17-year-old nephew, Pierre (Isaie Sultan), day after day after day. The repetition is enough to lull one into a hypnotized state, which could explain why Pierre seems so mesmerized by his aunt. Star-struck is more like it. Pierre worships at the altar of Nadia; to Pierre, she is the epitome of cool. But maybe Nadia is cool because she actually listens to Pierre; she cares what he thinks -- especially when it comes to his fashion advice.

We asked Patric Chiha, director of "Domain," to write a piece discussing what it was like to shoot his first feature. What he gave us was a love poem to its star, Béatrice Dalle. Enjoy. -- Indiewire Editors I wrote "Domain" for Béatrice Dalle. "Domain," my first feature film, is the story of a relationship between a woman and a teenager. She leaves the world while the other tries to find his place in it. It is a film about two opposite movements, a learning and a disappearance: Pierre, the teenager, tries to deal with the world, and is radically altered by the long departure, the process of self-destruction of his young aunt Nadia. He thinks he can save her and hold her back. But in the end, he understands that it is impossible. She eludes him and he lets her go. I don't like the idea of typecasting or casting against type.

If "Domain," the first feature of Viennese director Patric Chiha, were boiled down to pure formula, it would go something like this: Imagine "Harold and Maude" directed by Eric Rohmer with shades of film noir and doused in philosophical chatter enhanced by ample white wine. Everyone likes to release their lists of top 10 films but not everyone posts a list worth looking at. Usually the lists all look alike but you can always count on filmmaker John Waters to publish a list worth talking about, even if you don’t necessarily agree with his choices. This year Waters tops his list with Domain by Patric Chiha starring Béatrice Dalle, best known for her role in Betty Blue. Waters says, “the film will leave you breathless by the sheer elegance of this astonishing little workouts” – workouts meaning the majority of the film sees the main characters simply walking around. In the second spot is Enter the Void by Gaspar Noé, stating it to be the best film ever about taking hallucinogenic drugs.
