John Benson Brooks(1917-1999)

Songwriter "You Came a Long Way From St. Louis"), pianist, composer and
arranger, educated at the New England Conservatory and a student of
George Cohen, Joseph Schillinger, John Cage, and Tom Timothy. He was a
pianist in night clubs, dance halls and on radio from 1937, and
arranged for the orchestras of Les Brown, Tommy Dorsey, and Randy
Brooks. He led his own group in 1950, performed at the International
Jazz Festival in 1962, and made many records. Joining ASCAP in 1943, he
collaborated musically with Bob Russell, Eddie De Lange, Joseph
McCarthy and Mack Discant. His other popular-song compositions include
"Just As Though You Were Here", "Who Threw the Whiskey In the Well?",
"A Door Will Open", "Holiday Forever", "A Boy From Texas", "Over the
Weekend", "Where Flamingoes Fly", "99 Years" and "Season's
Greetings".
