- Nicknamed "The Power" for his phenomenal scoring accuracy and ability to hit high checkouts, he remains the only player who consistently achieves a mean three-dart average in excess of 100 during televised tournament play.
- On 1 August 2002, he hit a perfect nine-dart leg of 501 darts (seven consecutive treble 20s, followed by treble 19 and double 12), during a live televised encounter at the PDC World Matchplay Championships in Blackpool, Lancashire. This earned him a £100,000 pay bonanza and a place in the annuls of darts' history as only the third player ever to achieve this feat on television (the others being John Lowe [1984] and Paul Lim [1991])and the first man to hit the nine-darter during a live satellite broadcast.
- In January 2003, he was sensationally defeated by Canadian John Part in the final of the PDC world professional darts championship at England's Circus Tavern, Purfleet, ending his eight-year run of successive world title wins.
