- On 1 August 2002, he hit a perfect nine-dart leg of 501 darts (seven consecutive treble 20s, followed by treble 19 and double 12), during a live televised encounter at the PDC World Matchplay Championships in Blackpool, Lancashire. This earned him a £100,000 pay bonanza and a place in the annuls of darts' history as only the third player ever to achieve this feat on television (the others being John Lowe [1984] and Paul Lim [1991])and the first man to hit the nine-darter during a live satellite broadcast.
- In January 2003, he was sensationally defeated by Canadian John Part in the final of the PDC world professional darts championship at England's Circus Tavern, Purfleet, ending his eight-year run of successive world title wins.
- He was awarded the M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to sports in the 2000 Queen's New Years Honors List.
- His M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) was annulled in May 2002 upon his conviction of assaulting two female fans.

- By 2002, he had won the world professional darts crown on 10 occasions, making him the game's all-time greatest exponent. His other notable achievements include 5 World Matchplay titles, 1997 News of the World champion, and winner of the inaugural Las Vegas Desert Classic (2002) - the first major televised tournament to be staged outside the UK.
