Wendy Bell, a former Pittsburgh TV news anchor, filed a lawsuit against her former employer Monday saying the television station let her go because she is white. Bell, who was fired after comments in a Facebook post about a shooting were deemed racially insensitive, said in her federal lawsuit against Wtae-tv that the station violated her civil rights by firing her “because of race,” according to the Washington Post. Bell is seeking back pay, punitive damages and her old job. Back in March, she commented on the shooting death of six African-Americans in a Facebook post that would lead to her dismissal.

A veteran Pennsylvania news anchor who was fired over a racially charged Facebook post said her aim was simply to highlight a problem. Wendy Bell, a nearly 20-year veteran of Pittsburgh's Wtae-tv, came under fire last month by critics calling her Facebook post about a shooting in the Pittsburgh suburb of Wilkinsburg "tone deaf" and "racist." Pittsburgh news anchor Wendy Bell was fired Wednesday from ABC affiliate Wtae after outcry over a recent Facebook post in which she used racially stereotypical language in talking about “young black men.” Bell had been associated with Wtae for 18 years but could not withstand the outcry over her rant on the station’s own social media account speculating on the perpetrators of a then-unsolved murder. “Wtae has ended its relationship with anchor Wendy Bell,” Hearst Television, the station’s owner, said in a statement. “Wendy’s recent comments on a Wtae Facebook page were inconsistent with the company’s ethics and journalistic standards.
