On Thursday afternoon, the history-filled Sony lot in Culver City — which was the MGM lot during Hollywood’s Golden Age, home to “more stars than there are in heaven” — welcomed film composer John Williams, after whom the studio’s musical building was being renamed.
Williams, 91, who is best known for the scores of Star Wars and 29 Steven Spielberg films — 20 of which were scored in the structure that will henceforth be known as the John Williams Music Building — was on hand, as were many of his collaborators (Spielberg, J.J. Abrams and Spielberg’s producers Frank Marshall and Kristie Macosko Krieger) and colleagues (including fellow film composer Thomas Newman).
Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra kicked off the festivities by noting how much “magic was made right here in this building.” Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman then argued that the greatest of all time in many fields is debatable,...

French luxury shoe brand Roger Vivier always provides immersive experiences when unveiling new collections, and the spring-summer 2024 season was no different. Themed “Les Éléments Vivier,” the collection spanned over four floors, highlighting art and the best shoe savoir-faire in Paris’ 8th district on Thursday.
As guests arrived, things got a little cramped downstairs as no one was allowed up while Cher was getting a private tour. “I have been buying Roger Vivier shoes for more years than I’d care to admit. It’s so beautiful to see what [creative director] Gherardo [Felloni] is creating now with this incredible brand. I continue to be a fan,” said the “Turn Back Time” singer in collection notes.
Cher wasn’t the only celebrity in attendance. Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Laura Dern joined Emily in Paris castmates Camille Razat and Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, along with Eve, Poppy Delevingne, former French First Lady and singer Carla Bruni,...

Ivana Miloš, Agatha and the Limitless (2022), monotype, gouache, and collage on paper.Summer in WinterWhat would we do without air, without light?—Marguerite Duras, Agatha and the Limitless ReadingsThe hotel Les Roches Noires was located in Trouville-sur-Mer, France, and, as with so many hotels, its fame came from its visitors, in this case Marcel Proust, Gustave Flaubert, Claude Monet, and Marguerite Duras. In 1981, the foyer of the hotel was decorated with several intriguing, almost otherworldly plants whose type it is difficult for an amateur to classify. I know of these plants because Duras used the abandoned off-season, Second Empire-style hotel, which served as her temporary home, as a location to film Agatha and the Limitless Readings in March of that year. With different texts and films set in Les Roches Noires, this should not remain the last time Duras looked through its huge windows towards the English Channel but the...

Audiences can’t help but root for the underdog, and that’s exactly what writer-director-actor Radha Blank’s black-and-white directorial debut “The Forty-Year-Old Version” gives them. The film posits that there are no age restrictions to career advancement, and it’s a defensible assertion: Famed artists ranging from Claude Monet to Leonard Cohen didn’t experience breakout success until they were in their 30s and 40s. That’s Blank’s narrative, onscreen and off.
“It doesn’t matter how much you put into something, no matter how old you are, because you should always expect the possibility that your effort will be undervalued,” she said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “But you can’t really take that personally. It’s just the way it is.”

Above: All My LifeFollowing the online presentations of the Ann Arbor, Oberhausen, and Images festivals, the San Francisco Cinematheque’s Crossroads festival is the latest experimental film showcase to go virtual in 2020. While the major international festivals take their own tentative steps into the brave new world of digital this month, these modest, more specialized events have already made commendable inroads into the realm of live-streaming and on-demand viewing. What’s at stake in each of these ventures is quite different, and worth outlining: whereas festivals like the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival work to combat piracy and appease the demands of sales companies with vested interest in who sees what movies when by limiting press accreditation and geo-blocking films by region, smaller festivals that focus on artists’ cinema have more ideological issues to consider. In this field, concerns over context and materiality take precedence...

Claude Monet's Water Lilies
Few people have done more to broaden access to art than Phil Grabsky, who has been instrumental to the creation of over 100 films on the subject for television and the big screen. His latest, I, Claude Monet, tells the life story of the famous impressionist through dozens of his letters, illustrated with his paintings and, in the process, giving them a powerful narrative context. Given his work on The Artist's Garden: American Impressionism last year, I start our interview by asking if the impressionists are his particular favourite area within the wider arc of bringing art to screen.
