MSNBC Films is set to release a documentary looking at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his administration’s role in a 2022 migrant flight to Martha’s Vineyard.
Martha’s Vineyard v. DeSantis, which is executive produced by Trevor Noah, is set to premiere next month on MSNBC and Peacock. The doc, produced and directed by the Oscar-nominated duo David Heilbroner and Kate Davis (The Newburgh Sting, Traffic Stop), takes a look at the incident in September 2022 when the DeSantis administration rounded up 49 Venezuelan asylum seekers in San Antonio, Texas, and flew them by private plane to Massachusetts. The migrants have said that they were promised shelter, work, food and money in the form of a card once they arrived, but that turned out not to be true.

MSNBC Film’s “Guerrilla Habeas” pulls back the curtain on the intricacies of the broken U.S. immigration system by revealing how hard immigration lawyers must fight to reunite immigrant families with their children and loved ones.
In an exclusive clip shared with TheWrap, lawyers Sarah Gillman and Gregory Copeland navigate an almost impossible circumstance as they desperately work to halt the deportation of Baba Sillah and reunify him with his family. When the attorneys hear that Sillah is about to be deported from New York’s JFK airport, Gillman and Copeland immediately hustle to file a petition to block his deportation — despite being a three hour drive away in a snowstorm.
While the lawyers were certain they wouldn’t make it to JFK before the flight was scheduled to depart, they determined they would stretch the rules ever so slightly to file their petition online before calling the judge and demanding a hearing.

John Leguizamo hasn’t been known in the past for his interviewing skills, but he sure likes to talk. And that may be enough.
The actor and comedian may be recognized most for his theatrical work in self-conceived shows like “Mambo Mouth” and “Latin History for Morons” as well as his parts in movies such as “Carlito’s Way” and “Encanto.” Yet he may have a chance to take on a role in documentary programing previously held by people like Anthoney Bourdain, Stanley Tucci and W. Kamau Bell.
Interviewing people “is not exactly what I naturally do,” Leguizamo acknowledges during a phone interview. “Luckily, I am a friendly motherf—er, so that works to my advantage.”
In April, his abilities in the space will be put to the test, when MSNBC debuts the six-episode “Leguizamo Does America.” The series, produced with NBC News Studios, will put a spotlight on Latino contributions...

Zackary Canepari, director of the project along with Drea Cooper, said that what happened was “a one of a kind situation. This only happened because there was a pandemic and stimulus checks and boredom and social media and populism,...

Rep. Jamie Raskin, who claimed the national spotlight as lead manager of then-President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial in the waning days of his administration, is the subject of a new MSNBC documentary titled “Love & The Constitution.”
The 86-minute docu, debuting on the cabler Feb. 6, follows the U.S. Congressman over a three-year period, capturing his fight to uphold the Constitution during the Trump administration. Several pivotal moments in life will be included, including the loss of his son, Tommy, to suicide on Dec. 31, 2020.
Director Madeleine Carter began filming “Love & The Constitution” during the Maryland representative’s second year in Congress, when special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Trump was well underway, and Raskin sat on the House Judiciary Committee.
“My first day filming Congressman Raskin was July 4, 2018,” says Carter, who expected Mueller’s report would be out soon. “I also assumed that the release of the Mueller Report...

MSNBC is giving cable news rival CNN increased competition in the exploding documentary arena through ramped up acquisitions by a revived arm devoted to non-fiction programming.
MSNBC Films showed the seriousness of its intent in June, when it won an intense bidding war for “Paper & Glue,” by the visual artist and prior Oscar nominee Jr, ahead of its Tribeca Film Festival premiere. “Paper & Glue” has since qualified for Academy Award consideration, and is competing against documentaries including “Julia,” backed by CNN Films and Sony Pictures Classics. MSNBC also has qualified two short documentaries – Emily L. Harrold’s “Meltdown at Dixie” and Seth Freed Wessler’s “The Facility” — for Oscar consideration
“We’re cherry-picking projects that exist in the ecosystem, whether it’s content from studios, or from an independent filmmaker, or a production company,” explains MSNBC president Rashida Jones, who brought in veteran docu producer Amanda Spain as...

MTV Documentary Films has acquired worldwide rights to “Krimes,” the new non-fiction feature by award-winning filmmaker Alysa Nahmias. The deal comes before the film’s screening at Doc NYC on Sunday.
“Krimes” had its world premiere at the Heartland Film Festival. It chronicles the story of a clandestine masterpiece by an incarcerated artist. Isolated in a segregated environment where personal expression is verboten, 26 year-old artist Jesse Krimes covertly creates conceptual art during his six-year prison sentence. His work includes a large-scale mural made out of bed sheets, newspaper and hair gel. Jesse’s detailed crafting of this artwork provides a mental escape from the dehumanizing surroundings, while inspiring connections in unexpected places. With the help of fellow artists, he smuggles out individual panels of his work piece-by-piece to avoid being caught with contraband, only seeing his artwork in totality after coming home. His creations, Apokaluptein: 16389067 and Purgatory, mark his experience...

It’s never too early to relive one of the few comical moments from the final, chaotic months of the Trump presidency.
“Four Seasons Total Documentary,” a film centering around Rudy Giuliani’s botched attempt to contest the 2020 election results, is airing on MSNBC on Nov. 7 — exactly one year after the infamous debacle.
The documentary is less about the then-president’s lawyer accidentally booking a press conference outside a local landscaping company instead of the lavish Four Seasons Hotel, and instead focuses on a small business in Philadelphia that was unexpectedly thrust into the national spotlight when it agreed to host a political event in the middle of the presidential election.
MSNBC Films acquired rights to “Four Seasons Total Documentary” as part of the cable news channel’s attempt to bolster its presence in the documentary space. MSNBC Films is a new unit from the NBCUniversal-backed outlet that will...

A fight for answers as to why their children were battling rare cancers forms the crux of “In the Dark of the Valley,” the newest acquisition by MSNBC Films, a nascent unit that hopes to build the cable-news network’s pipeline of longform projects.
The documentary tells the story of a mother in southern California who finds that an abandoned rocket-testing facility, called the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, near her home was the site of one of the largest nuclear accidents in the U.S. She examines the possibility that the site may have exposed the surrounding community to cancer-causing radioactive and chemical waste. “When our team was first introduced to the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, we were astounded by the difference a group of broken, but unwavering mothers could make,” director Nicholas Mihm said in a prepared statement. “MSNBC gives these mothers a voice, a voice that has too...

After Rachel Maddow signed a new multi-year deal with MSNBC and NBCUniversal, there were reports that she ultimately will scale back her schedule to as little as once-a-week. That would leave the network with the potential loss of the nightly show, with no obvious successor.
In an interview with Deadline after Maddow’s deal was signed, MSNBC president Rashida Jones was asked whether, with the new agreement, Maddow will continue to host her show five nights a week. “Her show will continue as she’s doing it now,” she said. “One of the things we are looking at is she is so interested and excited in doing things in so many different areas within NBCUniversal, so we are figuring out how to juggle all of that, but her show continues on.” As for the longer term, Jones suggests that details are still being worked out.

The song “My Bathroom” from 1969 never made it onto the Billboard charts. But that doesn’t mean this ode to the commode—with lyrics like “My bathroom, my bathroom, is my very special room, where I primp and fuss and groom”—isn’t worthy of deeper appreciation.
That’s the guiding spirit of Bathtubs Over Broadway, the documentary directed by Dava Whisenant that explores the “golden age” of industrial musicals when companies great and small commissioned Broadway-style shows to celebrate their products and motivate sales staff.
“That kind of heyday of corporate musicals was between the ’50s and mid-’80s. Huge companies like Ford, McDonald’s, to very small companies that made cafeteria steam tables, all these companies were doing musicals,” Whisenant tells Deadline. “These weren’t commercials, they weren’t jingles, they were a full-blown book musical…with a storyline, making that salesman and his team feel better about the work they were doing.

During the panel entitled “The House That Horror Built: Inside Blumhouse Television” at the Atx Television Festival, the heads of Blumhouse talked about the future of the studio and what stories they’re looking to tell through TV. We all know Blumhouse for the horror movies they built their reputation around, but they have also brought us some surprises over the years, like the Oscar-winning film Whiplash, the sci-fi thriller Glass, and the latest films that gave a new feel to the horror genre, Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Us.
The studio is looking to branch out and tell their stories in the form of TV series. Co-president Marci Wiseman said, when talking about the direction that the studio is looking to head, that “Blumhouse is not just about the monsters under the bed, but [about exploring] things in the world that scare us and keep us up at night.” Executive...

During the Atx Television Festival panel “The House That Horror Built: Inside Blumhouse Television,” Blumhouse TV co-presidents Jeremy Gold and Marci Wiseman as well as the division’s Sahar Vahedi and Amanda Spain, took a deep dive into how Jason Blum’s multi-genre studio looks bring unsettling everyday stories to television.
On the feature side, Blumhouse is known for creating thriller and horror pics, and the TV side is looking to expand that through different lenses. “Blumhouse is not just about the monsters under the bed, but [about exploring] things in the world that scare us and keep us up at night,” Wiseman said.
Spain said they create projects and stories that make difficult subjects to watch and that they hope the masses come out for. The film side did it with Jordan Peele’s Oscar-nominated Get Out, and they are taking the same approach to TV.

In Their Boots documents the stories of troops coming home from the battlefield, the young wife whose husband never returns, the child who will never know her mother. Each episode is told form the first-person — there is no narrator. This makes for very compelling and, at times, gut-wrenching storytelling. Now in its third season, the series is branching out to encompass more voices and tell different stories. This spring, five veterans were selected from over 100 applicants to have a chance at telling theirs. The five fellows attended a three day production workshop in Los Angeles and will be given a professional camera man, a $7,500 stipend, and a $10,000 budget. Their episodes will be released this summer. A production of the of the Brave New Foundation, the series is funded by the Iraq Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund of the California Community Foundation. It is Executive Produced by documentarian Richard Ray Perez, and produced by Abe Greenwald,...
