The story everyone knows about the rise of the Mp3 and the end of the CD gold rush is a good one. It’s got Metallica and Dr. Dre, Sean Parker and the RIAA, Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, and the record industry’s flabbergasting decision to sue its own fans. But the real story, or arguably the most nuanced and fascinating one, lies elsewhere with a bunch of young computer wizzes scattered across the country and a handful of crafty, underpaid factory workers in Shelby, North Carolina.

Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba is still making sense of something he saw one day on the way to the recording studio: A man on the side of the road battling his mental health, violently screaming at the world. “He was throwing his arms and legs about,” the singer and guitarist tells Rolling Stone. “It was a display of rage in front of this bush, but it looked like he was dancing.”
He noticed other passersby gawking at the man with amusement, but Skiba felt compassion — and curiosity. “I was just thinking,...

Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing delivered an electrifying masterclass to a sold-out ballroom full of screaming fans at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands on Friday.
The in-conversation event was part of the 34th Singapore International Film Festival where Fan is the recipient of this year’s Cinema Icon Award. The festival is screening three of Fan’s films, curated by her – the recent “Green Night,” “Buddha Mountain” and “Double Xposure” – and the star walked the red carpet on opening night, Nov. 30.
Fan spoke frankly – in Mandarin, which was translated live to English by an interpreter – on a range of topics including an in-depth analysis of Han Shuai’s “Green Night,” which comes to Singapore after Berlin and Busan. In the film, Fan plays a Chinese woman, trapped in an oppressive life with her Korean husband, and sets out on an adventure with a mysterious green-haired girl, played by Lee Joo-young (“Broker...

‘Right at the very beginning!’ – answered nobody, ever to the question of where a newcomer to Doctor Who should start watching. This is a show with almost 900 episodes, six decades of production, and a megaton of baggage.
To start with 1963’s “An Unearthly Child” now and try to watch everything, plus spin-offs, before you could get involved with the Ncuti Gatwa era? You’d need a Tardis.
So where to jump in? Now that BBC iPlayer is host to the whole Doctor Who kit and kaboodle in the UK as part of its new “Whoniverse” division, it’s a very good question. That’s why we asked it to our writhing nest of Doctor Who experts. And here’s what they recommend:

On their ninth album, Blink-182 are still pondering the riddle that’s always been at the center of their antic-filled career: “What’s my age again?” This time, the answer is pretty clear: old in life, but young at heart. The songs on One More Time are steeped in the sharp perspective of grown-ups who have gone through some shit and wonder how the hell they got where they are. After all, it’s been 12 years since they released an album with their signature lineup of bassist Mark Hoppus, drummer Travis Barker,...

Blink-182 are hung up big time on their new song, “Fell in Love,” the latest offering from the band’s upcoming album, One More Time.
“Fell in Love” is a bit of jangly alterna-pop, the bright guitars paired with some effervescent synths. Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus share vocal duties, reminiscing about those exciting, slightly stupid moments in an early relationship — until the inevitable hammer of doom drops: “It’s fucking with my head/Now we can never pretend, we can only be friends/Remember the time, we fell in love.

This is Day 127 of the WGA strike and Day 54 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
After the long Labor Day weekend, the Writers Guild of America East had no pickets scheduled for Tuesday in New York City, and turnout was light on a hot and muggy morning at a pair of SAG-AFTRA pickets outside NBCUniversal and Netflix offices in Manhattan.
“We are small but mighty today,” voice actor, singer and SAG-AFTRA strike captain Sue Berch told about four dozen people in wrap-up remarks at the Netflix rally, where actors Susan Sarandon, F. Murray Abraham, Michael Cyril Creighton and Mike Doyle also walked the picket line.

This article contains spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
Spider-Man has faced many foes on the big screen, but none of them have been quite so confusing to fight as The Spot. Voiced by Jason Schwartzman, this villain's big-screen debut in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" sees him clumsily trying to use his new powers to rob an Atm (because the job market is unfairly hostile to candidates who have a void where their face should be).
We've seen characters that have the power to create portals before. In "X-Men: Days of Future Past," Blink (Fan Bingbing) used them to buy time during a doomed battle against the Sentinels. More recently, "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" staged a daring heist that hinged on a portal spell. But animation might be the best medium for exploring the infinite possibilities of portals -- as seen in the portal doors of "Monsters, Inc.

Just when you thought Turnstile couldn’t get any more, well, Turnstile, they’ve popped up in the newly released Season 3 of I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson with their new track, “Listening.” Stream it below.
Despite being attributed to the fictional band The Everything-You-Knows in the show credits, it’s undeniably Turnstile — though the track veers off their usual sonic path onto one more pop-punk. Brendan Yates’ vocals cooly coo over pogo-worthy instrumentation in the catchiest of ways, befitting of the school setting energy of the “Children’s Choir” sketch.
As Stereogum points out, the appearance doesn’t come out of nowhere. Robinson previously posted an Instagram Story of him attending a Turnstile concert, and they’ve been spotted in multiple photos together. Check out a few of those below.

A big question hung over the final night of Coachella 2023’s second weekend: What now? Seven days earlier, on April 16, Frank Ocean had closed out the festival’s first weekend with a performance that he himself acknowledged as chaotic at best. Some fans were devastated by it, while others found it off-handedly brilliant; either way, it added up to one of the weirdest headline sets ever.

Man on Man, the duo comprised of Faith No More’s Roddy Bottum and his partner Joey Holman, have announced their sophomore album, Provincetown, due out July 16th via Polyvinyl Records. They also dropped the video for lead single “Showgirls.”
Much of Provincetown was written in the Massachusetts town that gives its namesake and where Bottum and Holman shared their first home together. For example, the noisy pop-punker “Showgirls” was inspired by a Provincetown variety show and sees Bottum and Holman trading off on vocals and guitar licks.
“As we lean into what Man on Man is and will be, two things immediately come up. Energy and community,” said Bottum in the press release. “’Showgirls’ is all that.”

Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker played their first show together in nearly a decade at Coachella.
The Friday night performance at the Sahara Tent was announced just days prior to the festival’s kick-off. DeLonge, Hoppus, and Barker sounded in fine form as they ripped through an 18-song comprised primarily of greatest hits like “Anthem Part Two,” “The Rock Show,” “What’s My Age Again?” and “All the Small Things.” The setlist also included the live debut of their new song “Edging” as well as the first performance of “Aliens Exist” with DeLonge since 2001.
In between songs, DeLonge and Hoppus delivered their trademark banter, delivering crass commentary about the Dalai Lama and DeLonge’s mother’s vagina.

Last month, Blink-182 postponed their Latin American tour dates due to an injury drummer Travis Barker suffered on his ring finger. He smashed the finger during rehearsal, leading to emergency surgery and a later-than-expected launch of the band’s first tour with singer and guitarist Tom DeLonge since 2014.
Barker offered an update to Rolling Stone on his recovery: “I’m recovering really, really well,” he says. His cast was taken off a week after last month’s surgery, and he has been in physical therapy working to “expedite the process” of his healing.

Blink-182 have pushed back the start of their upcoming reunion tour as drummer Travis Barker recovers from finger surgery.
Barker, Tom DeLonge, and Mark Hoppus were set to play their first shows together in nearly 10 years beginning later this month in Mexico and Latin America. However, due to a “freak accident that no one saw coming,” Barker requires surgery on his ring finger, DeLonge explained in a video message posted on Wednesday. As such, those dates have now been moved to 2024.
Barker initially injured his finger in early February while rehearsing for Blink-182’s upcoming tour. “I smashed my finger so hard I dislocated it and tore the ligament,” he explained at the time. Last week, Barker appeared to re-injure the finger, ultimately forcing him to undergo surgery on Wednesday.

As we catch up with Brandi Carlile in a phone call, she is able to talk at some leisure because she’s traveling by train, headed from Washington, D.C., where the night before she sang in honor of U2 and Amy Grant at the Kennedy Center Honors, to New York City, where she’s just about to perform with Marcus Mumford and Jon Batiste for a War Child benefit. From that show, she will be heading right into rehearsals for her second “Saturday Night Live” appearance of the year. This whirlwind east coast actually started a few days earlier up in NYC, where she served as the headliner for the American Museum of Natural History’s annual gala, giving everyone a Fomo moment when Steve Martin turned up on stage to play banjo with her.

“Me Time,” a slapdash comedy by writer-director John Hamburg, stars Kevin Hart as Sonny Fisher, a stay-at-home parent suffering from what Betty Friedan labeled “the problem with no name.” Sonny feels lonely and out-of-step around adults with concerns more grown-up than his fixation on minivan technology, elementary school talent shows and a proposal to include plant-based milks in the cafeteria. His wife Maya (Regina Hall), a high-powered architect, proposes that he press pause on his domestic responsibilities to reconnect with his own inner needs. She’ll take their two kids Dash and Ava (Che Tafari and Amentii Sledge) over spring break if he’ll agree to attend the 44th birthday blowout extravaganza of his childhood best friend Huck (Mark Wahlberg), a footloose, Peter Pan-esque party boy whose company isn’t much more mature.
