I'm sure you all know the famous, then-shocking twist of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho." Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) is set up as the film's protagonist; the opening scene is an intimate moment between her and lover Sam Loomis (John Gavin), who can't commit until he pays his debts. So, she impulsively steals $40,000 from her boss' client. Surely the movie will be about her on the run.
Well, it is for a while, but then she makes it to the Bates Motel. She chats up polite young innkeeper Norman (Anthony Perkins), but his elderly mother sure seems creepy. With an hour to go, Marion is murdered by a knife-wielding assailant in the motel shower (a scene so scary it left Leigh scared of showers). The film's second half becomes a new story about Sam and Marion's sister Lila (Vera Miles) investigating her disappearance. They stumble onto the truth -- that Marion was killed by Norman,...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A Very Sapphic Second Coming
Given the choice to watch Jesus fight a pack of lesbian vampires or an honest-to-God homophobe, I will almost always choose the lesbian vampires. It’s not that I wouldn’t like to see an intolerant bigot get roundhouse-kicked by the Prince of Peace; in fact, that image is particularly tempting ahead of Easter weekend during an election year.
But as an ex-Catholic school girl born of the “Twilight” generation, my unquenchable thirst for horny vampires supersedes my taste for virtue signaling most of the time.

Love Is Blind isn’t the only reality series that Chris Coelen came up with. He has quite a few hit reality shows on Netflix, including Married at First Sight. Because of this, he might know better than anyone what the differences are between the shows.

Married at First Sight and Love Is Blind both aim to see if two complete strangers can grow to love each other. But the Netflix projects go about this experiment in two different ways. In Married at First Sight, the contestants start off already married, and determine if their marriage will work out. In Love Is Blind, contestants have to feel out their potential partners without knowing what they look like.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Coelen went further into the differences between the two reality shows.

From its autumnal aesthetic to its haunted history, Massachusetts is always a great place to spend the Halloween season, but horror fans were particularly spoiled this year. In addition to the usual festivities in Salem and repertory programming at Boston theaters, we had no less than four horror conventions throughout the state in the span of two months: Silver Scream Con, Terror Con, MonstahXpo, and Hometown Haunts & Hops.
Many convention memories are made in hotel bars, so why not set one in a brewery? The inaugural Hometown Haunts & Hops took place at Mayflower Brewing in Plymouth on October 28, providing a fun environment on the unseasonably warm Saturday before Halloween. Curated by America’s Hometown Horror podcast and Inebri-Art, both based in Plymouth, the event is poised to become an annual occurrence.

The following article contains major spoilers for the novels Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror and The Trench, as well as the feature films The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.
One year before Steven Spielberg made us all afraid to go into the water, Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel Jaws took the literary world by storm. Nearly fifty years after publication it remains one of the most popular examples of shark fiction with few titles entering the waters of its elite circle. One such novel is Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten.
Published in 1997, this sci-fi horror brings to life Otodus megalodon, a prehistoric relative of the great white shark estimated to stretch up to 65 feet in length. The novel pits retired rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham in the movies) against this mammoth beast after it escapes from a warmer pocket of water near the Mariana Trench.

Threads may not be the “Twitter killer” Meta wants it to be. After reaching 30 million users during its first 24 hours of activity, Threads’ momentum has slowed down. According to a Time article, the number of daily active users (DAUs) on Threads has dropped by 80% since the platform’s peak.
The Time report claims that Threads reached 50 million DAUs on Android devices shortly after its ballyhooed launch. A little more than a month later, about 10 million DAUs are still visiting the Twitter-style app on Android, according to data from Similarweb.
Figures provided by Sensor Tower show a similar decline in Threads’ engagement. The average user is spending about 2.4 minutes per day on the app — another 80% dip from the X rival’s peak.

The following contains major spoilers for The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.
Sharksploitation movies live and die based on the strength of their bite. In order to make us afraid to go in the water, genre filmmakers usually deploy a barrage of visual and practical effects to bring to life the ocean’s most feared predator: the shark. Of the many aquatic horror films to hit the screen, few have featured teeth so big and vicious as The Meg.
Jon Turteltaub’s action-packed shark film brings to life Otodus megalodon, the largest predator the world has ever known. Thought to be extinct, a group of oceanic explorers discover this prehistoric shark species lurking beneath the thermocline, a temperature barrier near the ocean floor. A box office hit, The Meg won over audiences with its splashy energy, dynamic special effects, and a captivating performance from action star Jason Statham. Five years later,...

Every summer movie season deserves a killer shark flick! After all, it was a killer shark movie that pretty much kicked off what we now know as the "summer blockbuster" way back in 1975, the immortal "Jaws." Because of that film's success, every killer shark venture is inevitably compared to that Spielberg classic, its three sequels, and the large number of copies that appeared immediately in its wake. In a subgenre that's been through the waves of popularity, postmodernism, and back, there's not a ton that's wholly new out there in the ocean.
For that reason, the Sharksploitation subgenre has generally settled into a pattern not unlike the slasher, an "if it ain't broke,...

Netflix’s “Love Is Blind” has become one of the most popular reality dating shows in the world thanks largely to its irresistible concept: Couples date in “pods” where they can hear but not see each other, forming connections based truly on what’s inside and not on looks. As strong as that premise is, it’s not the only reason audiences are addicted to the show; a lot of the appeal of “Love Is Blind” comes from the emotional investment it engenders in the viewer by fulfilling the main requirement of any good romance: presenting “characters” the audience desperately wants to see end up together.
Casting director Donna Driscoll has been with “Love Is Blind” from the beginning and is responsible for finding contestants for whom the show’s experiment has the best odds at success — and given that four of the couples from Season 4 got married in the final episode,...

“Now I’m through with land and the land’s through with me,” says world-weary mariner Donkeyman (Arthur Shields) in The Long Voyage Home, succinctly expressing the dichotomy that runs through John Ford’s 1940 drama. Adapted by Dudley Nichols from four of Eugene O’Neill’s one-act plays, the film is deeply concerned with the threshold between land and sea.
Even when in port, the men working on the SS Glencairn are largely confined to the British cargo ship, and for logical reasons, such as police and military restrictions during wartime. For the first time in 75 years, one of golf’s four major tournaments has returned to the city of Los Angeles.
The United States Open championship, now in its 123rd year, is taking place on the Los Angeles Country Club’s North Course for the very first time (also making it the first time a major championship has been held at the club in general). This lack of major championship presence at the 126-year-old course – some 325 acres in the middle of Beverly Hills — is largely by design; infamous for its discriminatory exclusivity (the club had no Jewish members until 1977, and the first Black member was admitted in 1991), the club has opened its gates to the public to host the Los Angeles Open four times (most recently in 1940) and the 2017 Walker Cup.

Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon is one of the most legendary rock albums from the 1970s. It’s achieved an almost mystifying status as its otherworldly music transfixed audiences. The album doesn’t include collaborations with other artists. There was nearly a voice cameo from former Beatle Paul McCartney, but Pink Floyd left it off the record.

A version of this story about the designers behind “Angelyne,” “Impeachment: American Crime Story” and “Pam & Tommy” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
A nostalgic look in the rearview mirror is nothing new for television creators. But it is unusual when so many mine the same era, in this case reframing controversial personalities and events from the recent past. The frenetic landscape of the 1980s smashing directly into the 1990s was omnipresent in three different limited series: Peacock’s “Angelyne,” FX’s “Impeachment: American Crime Story” and Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy”. They not only provided viewers with a satisfying reintroduction to the excesses of those decades, but also gave their leading female characters a dissecting reevaluation. And the designers on all three projects were vital to the series’ success.

Larry Laque, Kristin Brown, Jessica Driscoll and Doug Seybert are exiting their roles at Warner Bros. Discovery, Variety has learned.
They join Corie Henson and Todd Weiser, who were also learned to be leaving the company on Thursday. These firings are the latest additions to a long list since the company’s merger was made official on April 8, after which CEO David Zaslav committed to cutting 3 billion in costs over the next three years.
