In the wake of American Idol singer Nikki McKibbin‘s untimely death on Sunday, her fellow contestants, along with the show’s host and a former judge, have taken to social media to pay tribute.
McKibbin died following complications from a brain aneurysm that occurred Wednesday. According to her husband, Craig Sadler, the singer was kept on life support in order to fulfill her wish of being an organ donor.

Given that it is Pride Month, it might be a good time to discuss “American Idol” Season 18 winner Just Sam‘s acknowledging her sexuality in an interview with the New York Post last month. That makes her the first openly LGBTQ+ contestant to claim the prize.

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

Jordin Sparks isn't the first "American Idol" star to step away from the reality boob tube and give Hollywood a go, and she won't be the last. Her loosely biographical movie "Sparkle" — also featuring the late Whitney Houston, Mike Epps and Cee-Lo Green — is but the latest instance of an "Idol" star getting a close-up on the big screen.
The movie successes of Sparks' predecessors in "Idol" alumni-hood have been a mixed bag of total wins and, well, sheer embarrassment. So, how will the season six-winning songstress' flick fare?
Let's compare "Idol" in Hollywood notes to find out.
Jennifer Hudson
While Season 3's winner (Fantasia Barrino) has had very little luck in the Hollywood spotlight, its the seventh-placer who serves as the lodestar example of an "Idol" alum making movie magic happen for herself. You've Lost That Loving Feeling couldn't have been a better song choice for Phillip Phillips & Joshua Ledet's duet on American Idol last night as Phillip's post-performance congratulatory hug was brutally rebuffed by Joshua on live television.
Video - Josh Denies Phillip
The look on Phillip's face says it all, "What the hell, dude?" It was so unexpected that even Steven Tyler commented on it during his critique, telling Joshua, "You need to embrace each other up there! Hold each other, look into each other's eyes and sing that song! Get over it!"
And when Phillip tossed his arm lovingly around those previously inhospitable shoulders once again, the horrified look on Joshua's face only compounded the issue.
So what's the deal here? I'm hesitant to think the boys dislike one another since Phillip was equally surprised by the diss and more prone to assume the issue lies within the way Joshua is trying to portray himself to America...

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

There’s currently a war of words going on between the popular talent competition shows American Idol and The Voice. But, as is so often the case with most disagreements, both parties could actually have more to learn from each other then they’d think.
While The Voice’s Adam Levine may have disagreed with American Idol’s Randy Jackson’s diss of his show, regarding first-season winner Javier Colon (” was an artist who had a deal at Capitol Records for several years, a failed contract… That show was almost ‘second chance people,’” Jackson had said), there are certain things...

The news of Pia “I Got Voted Off ‘Idol’ Way Early And All I Got Was This Awesome Record Deal” Toscano joining Interscope’s roster surprised no one, except maybe my cat Moo Shu. (Homegirl’s a Voice fan. She thinks Idol is so seven years ago.) Toscano already shattered records by being the lowest-placing Idol also-ran to nab a significant major label deal in the show’s ten year history. (She was ninth! Ninth, I say!)
While we wait to see whether Pia becomes the next Jennifer Hudson or Kristy Lee Cook, let’s look back at the careers of previous ninth-place finishers to see how they’ve fared.
Season One: Jim Verraros
Jim was our inaugural “token sob story” contestant, and he parlayed his name recognition into movie roles in popular gay indie flicks. (Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds might be my fave sequel title since Electric Boogaloo.

Throughout the 10 seasons of "American Idol," contestants have won over viewers in a variety of ways. Casey James took off his shirt. Tim Urban slid across the stage. And countless others, ranging from season one's Jim Verraros to season 10 also-ran Chris Medina, have shared their personal lives and hardships as a way to inspire viewers.
But recently eliminated Jacob Lusk — whose life has had enough drama for at least three Tyler Perry movies — was dead-set on gaining a fanbase using one thing and one thing only: his voice.

On Wednesday night's (January 26) episode of "American Idol," the viewing audience (and the judges) were treated to the tale of Chris Medina, a contestant who not only performed the Script's "Breakeven" but also told the heartbreaking story of his fiancée, who was in a tragic accident that put her in a coma for a short time and left her with brain damage. He remains her caregiver (along with her mother), and his devotion to her was a truly touching moment. It's unsure whether Medina has the chops to make it as the winner of "American Idol," but his story is one of the most inspiring and heartstring-tugging in the history of the show. (It certainly didn't leave very many dry eyes in the MTV Newsroom.)
In fact, it made us think: Was Medina's story the biggest tear-jerking moment in the history of "American Idol"? The show has always dealt with heightened emotions,...

The Season 10 premiere of "American Idol" is only a week away and to make the days go by a bit faster, Zap2it decided to take a stroll down memory lane and re-evaluate the previous nine seasons.
Each day leading up to the premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 19, we will post a retrospective on each season. We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.
First up, the inaugural 2002 Season. We kind of miss the more intimate, smaller feeling of the show when it was still figuring itself out and had a touch of innocence to it. It produced one of the show's most successful "Idol" winners ever and had that extremely awkward co-host Brian Dunkleman (remember him? Bueller?) competing with Ryan Seacrest for more screen-time.

As you might have heard, American Idol's season five runner-up Katharine McPhee landed a lead role in an NBC comedy pilot called The Pink House. The premise of the show? McPhee plays a Midwestern girl who must cope with being one of the only women in her neighborhood without a "California beach-bunny" figure. Though I worry the mere presence of the word "bunny" in this description might remind viewers of McPhee's awkward turn in 2008's The House Bunny, I say good for McPhee! I was never the biggest fan of the singer, but I've got to admire the serious...

Amidst the on-going controversy addressed to Adam Lambert following his provocative performance at the 2009 American Music Awards (AMAs) over the weekend, some "American Idol" alumni break their silence to offer what they have in mind regarding the much-talked gig. I see no reason why he should be punished by ABC."

A movie franchise is like a shark. For it to stay alive, it has to move forward. It’s a lesson that the Eating Out franchise would do well to learn.
I liked 2004’s Eating Out a lot. The campy gay sex farce was downright revolutionary coming after decades of earnest, angsty coming out dramas (and two years before Another Gay Movie).
2006’s Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds wasn’t as successful, but it wasn’t a disaster.
But Eating Out 3: All You Can Eat, now playing in limited release, is the weakest entry in the series so far. It’s not that parts of it aren’t funny. It’s just that the movie takes absolutely no chances, choosing instead to change a few details and repeat what came before in the first two movies.

In last week's column, I discussed Glee and how some of the characters felt as if they bordered a little close to being stereotypes. I said:
Created by out writer Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck) the show includes much for a good gay boy to love including an out gay character. And some of the musical numbers are flat out brilliant. But I thought the first half of the pilot was actually bad and some of the characterizations — sassy, chunky black girl, fashion-obsessed gay boy — sometimes veered too close to stereotypes. Much will depend on how those characters evolve and whether the writing holds up .

She was already in bed with Ryan Seacrest.
At yesterday's taping of The Ellen Degeneres Show, our favorite power lesbian dropped a heck of a bombshell: She's going to be the new permanent judge on American Idol. This capped what was already a pretty gay week for Idol.
First we had news that Adam Lambert was releasing his album on November 24th, then we had the beautiful wedding photos of season one contestant, Jim Verraros. Locally, we decided that last season's winner was Gay Catnip. Now this.
Seriously though, Ellen has always been a fan of Idol. She talks about it constantly, she has each contestant on her show when they're voted off. And she's considered one of the nicest people in Hollywood, which makes her a natural to take over Paula Abdul's role of nurturing the contestants. She's also up to trading barbs with Simon. It's a natural fit.

Every week we pick the gays who we think have made the biggest splash in television and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week. We'll announce the winner in Friday's Bgwe column, and that champ will reign until a new set of challengers are introduced the following week to try to steal his title.
Last week Oliver Fish from One Life to Live took the crown for his angsty coming out scene. But this week he's been busy on the periphery with police work, and a slew of reality show personalities have crowded out the field: We've got a gay Idol finalist and his groom, a harried Project Runway contestant, the most successful gay Big Brother housemate ever, and a guy who literally "danced his ass off" (well, at least 90 pounds of it).

Jim Verraros is keeping things civil. Chief among them, his union to his entrepreneur partner of four years, Bill Brennan. The American Idol alum, who finished ninth during the reality hit's maiden season, swapped vows with Brennan at the Oak Brook Hills Resort in Illinois (where, incidentally, same-sex marriages are not recognized) in a unity sand ceremony.
