Jones died Saturday of natural causes at his home in the Hollywood Hills, his grandson Erté deGarces told The Hollywood Reporter.
Jones portrayed ranch hand Andy Belden on 25 episodes of NBC’s The Virginian over an eight-year span, was one of the bad guys who slipped a noose over Clint Eastwood’s neck in Hang ‘Em High (1968) and played a sheriff on the 1983-84 NBC primetime soap The Yellow Rose, starring Sam Elliott, Cybill Shepherd and Chuck Connors.

There are few things as quietly distressing and disappointing to the film fan as seeing people you like and admire feature in movies that are total turd. Such is the case with Let’s Be Cops. I really like Jake Johnson. If you read my Frightfest review of Creep you’ll probably have noticed that I spent about a third of that gushing about Safety Not Guaranteed, the Johnson-starring offbeat dramedy in which he is really good as a louche journalist. He is also really good in New Girl. So good, in fact, that he pretty much carried the show for the first half season it takes to get used to how annoying Zooey Deschanel is in it.

The arrival of Let's Be Cops, a comedy about two no-hopers who don uniforms, buy a used squad car off eBay and pose as police (hijinks naturally ensue), could not feel more ill-timed considering it comes in the same month as the fatal shootings in Ferguson, Missouri, and the subsequent civil unrest. With blanket media coverage questioning the competency and culpability of police, do we really need to be seeing a film that treats the job as a lark? Does anybody really aspire to be a police offer right now?
Awkward timing, however, doesn't really disguise the fact that Let's Be Cops is an absolute stinker from start to finish. If the Jump Street movies are shining examples of how to successfully...

“Let's Be Cops” may be the summer's next R-rated comedy hit — providing ticket buyers completely disregard the critics pumping it full of lead. The 20th Century Fox release starring Jake Johnson (“New Girl”) and Damon Wayans Jr. (“Happy Endings”) as two Los Angeles losers who pretend to be cops after dressing up for a party has been nearly universally panned in reviews summing it up as, simply, not that funny. Also read: ‘Let's Be Cops’ Opens With Strong $5.2 Million at Box Office Director Luke Greenfield‘s comedy he co-wrote with screenwriter Nicholas Thomas has accumulated a 9 percent “rotten” rating on Rotten.

This was just a bad idea. Don't get me wrong… Jake Johnson, Rob Riggle, Keegan Michael Key, and Damon Wayans Jr. are all genuinely funny people, and when you put that many funny people together, there are going to be funny moments. I certainly laughed a few times during "Let's Be Cops," and as far as actual film craft goes, it's perfectly serviceable. But if anything counts in comedy, it's timing, and right now is not the time to make a movie about how easy it is to abuse the privileges that come with wearing a police uniform. I'm not just talking about this week's horrifying events in Ferguson, Missouri, either, although I'm sure everyone at Fox is mortified. This is the second time in recent memory that they've released a comedy at the exact wrong moment, with "The Watch" rolling into theaters just as the Treyvon Martin conversation was at its most heated.

Between the Ferguson, Missouri, police shootings, Lauren Bacall’s death and Robin Williams’s suicide, this has been a particularly painful week to endure. Its gloomy times like these where we could collectively use some comedy to abate the sadness. And so in desperate need of a remedy we turn to Hollywood’s latest comic offering, Let’s Be Cops. There is laughter to be found here, unfortunately that laughter is buried under a towering mountain of rampant misogyny, homophobia and poop humor. In other words, if you like your movies in which two males treat women poorly, mock homosexuality and repeatedly slap each other in the face, this film is for you. From moment one Luke Greenfield’s regressive trifle feels dated — culturally, politically, cinematically. We open with the Backstreet Boys pop hit “I Want It That Way,” which would be slightly amusing if This Is The End didn’t exist. But...

Chicago – The premise is sound, but the new film “Let’s Be Cops” refuses to do something original with the premise of a couple of regular Joes pretending to be Johnny Law. The same stale jokes and inevitable need for heroic action climax overwhelms the mild amusement of it all.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Jokes about horny boys, marijuana, horny ladies, mistaken identities and obsession with ridiculous minutiae – like having the boys involved in a “case” – limit the enjoyment of the two lead actors. Damon Wayans Jr. handles smart comedy much better than the physical or character variety, and is miscast, and his partner Jake Johnson practically sweats blood to deliver the scenario, going off in directions that quite frankly would have him spend jail time in the real world. Will there be a wacky arrest that the fakers have to do? Yes, and it will be extreme, though bizarrely funny. In essence,...

Chicago – When the assignment was to find a comedy team to take on impersonating police officers, funny men Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. – of the TV series “New Girl” – fit the uniforms perfectly for the new film, “Let’s Be Cops.” Add in the always hilarious Rob Riggle, and let the games begin.
Riggle is a well known comic character presence on “The Daily Show” and films like “The Hangover,” “21 Jump Street,” “Big Miracle” and the upcoming “Dumb and Dumber To.” Riggle is also famous for having served in the Marines and Marine Reserves for a total of 23 years – retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel – and began his comedy career after his first military stint.

But when these newly-minted “heroes” get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.

When a couple of slacker buddies need a costume party plan, they come up with the fine idea of going faux Five-o. So Damon Wayans Jr and Jake Johnson don their Lapd uniforms, and people think they’re the real thing. Our heroes soon experience the respect (and women and drugs and such) that comes with it. They take the joke to the next level by creating a fake squad car, and serious hijinks ensue. But so does stumbling into real crooks and major crimes. The first red band trailer for the self-explanatory comedy Let's Be Cops starring Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. was short on big laughs, but a new red band trailer dives a little deeper into what seems to be a shallow concept. As these two friends keep pretending to be cops, they get deeper into trouble. The new trailer shows off more of the dangerous activities they get involved with when they're mistaken for real cops at first, including Rob Riggle. But when the bad guys find out that they have forged badge numbers, it's assumed they might be working undercover for the FBI or the Atf. We're still not sold on the premise sustaining itself, but Wayans and Johnson certainly make it seem more appealing. Watch below! Over the past few television seasons, both New Girl‘s Jake Johnson and Happy Endings‘ Damon Wayans Jr. have found their star rise with a growing number of fans, as well as critical acclaim. With Wayans Jr. playing a brief role in the pilot episode of New Girl, many were excited to see the two re-team again, an idea that came to fruition when both performers signed on for Let’s be Cops prior to Wayans Jr. reprising his role on the Fox sitcom. Luke Greenfield takes on directing duties, along with co-writing the screenplay with Nicholas Thomas, and Johnson and Wayans Jr. are joined onscreen by Keegan Michael-Key, Rob Riggle, Jon Lajoie, and Nina Dobrev. The first trailer, which is a red-band, for the film has now been released, and can be seen below.

New Girl actors Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. must really enjoy each other’s company. During the hiatus from their comedy series, the actors stuck together to shoot a new film titled Let’s Be Cops, for The Girl Next Door director Luke Greenfield.
Like a reversed 21 Jump Street, Let’s Be Cops tells the story of two friends, Ryan (Johnson) and Justin (Wayans Jr.), who dress up as police officers for a costume party. However, when the friends find out that their appearances as cops has its perks, they decide to continue the disguise and see how far it takes them. Predictably, they will end up dealing with real criminals and dangerous situations.
On paper, Let’s Be Cops seems like a one-joke movie that could succeed due to the chemistry of two solid comic actors. However, the red-band trailer leaves much to be desired. There are a...

Right now you can see Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. on Fox's comedy series "New Girl," but later this summer, they'll be throwing on a badge in the R-rated comedy Let's Be Cops. Now the first red band trailer for the comedy has arrived, and it feels a little long, mostly because the laughs don't seem to be as big as they should be in a red band trailer. Johnson and Wayans seem like a great team as a couple friends who dress up as cops for a party and take the costume a little too far, but this feels like it should just be an episode on their TV series rather than a full movie. Maybe it's better than the trailer indicates. Watch? Here's the first red band trailer for Luke Greenfield's Let's Be Cops, originally from Yahoo: Let's Be Cops is directed by Luke Greenfield (The...

Exclusive: After completing production on his buddy comedy script Let’s Be Cops, Fox has made a mid-six figure deal for an untitled pitch by Nick Thomas. The project will be produced by Genre Films’ Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood, who with director Luke Greenfield produced Let’s Be Cops. That comedy, which Fox releases August 13, is about a couple of knuckleheads who impersonate cops and get in way over their heads. The film stars Nina Dobrev, Jake Johnson, Andy Garcia and Damon Wayans Jr. Thomas made the preemptive deal to write what is described to me as a big idea concept comedy, so they’re keeping the logline under wraps. It shares the buddy action comedy genre of Let’s Be Cops. Fox’s Jeremy Kramer will oversee it. The scribe is repped by Paradigm and Colden Mckuin Frankel.

The writer-director should be best known for his underrated 2004 cult hit The Girl Next Door, starring Elisha Cuthbert, Emile Hirsch and Timothy Olyphant, but it's hard to overlook his first feature, The Animal, or his latest, Something Borrowed. In the middle of a story about Greenfield signing a new network deal at ABC, having directed the pilot for the their upcoming comedy Prairie Dogs, two new feature film projects emerged as also on tap for the filmmaker and his WideAwake production company. Variety reports that Greenfield is developing two movies including new dramedy called The Last Bachelor and an untitled action-comedy at 20th Century Fox. Back in 2004 Luke Greenfield showed promise with the better-than-it-should-have-been sex comedy The Girl Next Door, but since then we’ve been waiting for the director repeat that same magic. Unfortunately his last effort, Something Borrowed, fell prey to all the generic rom-com trappings he avoided in his previous feature. He’s now looking for his next feature and has lined up two possibilities, Variety reports.
With the connective tissue being Mark Ruffalo, producer of his directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious, Andrew Renz, has linked up with Greenfield for the dramedy The Last Bachelor, which “follows a single man in his late 30s who drops everything to seek out his soulmate. When he finally meets “the one,” he finds himself behaving as if he had a ticking biological clock.”
Then the other project, just receiving a polish by Stuart Blumberg, scribe of Ruffalo’s The Kids Are All Right (coincidence? I think not.
