Last year, actress Penélope Cruz set up a joint production venture, Moonlyon, with Madrid-based The Mediapro Studio at the urging of its CEO, Laura Fernández Espeso, a rising star in Spain’s fast-expanding media sector.
“It’s been an amazing connection from the first,” Cruz says, about her working relationship with Fernández Espeso, Variety’s International Media Woman of the Year.
It was no surprise to anyone that Cruz chose Fernández Espeso as her partner: Lifting up female talent in Western Europe and beyond has been a huge part of Fernández Espeso’s mission since she took the reins of the busy production studio five years ago. At her direction, the company, which has 30 production houses, has capitalized on the growing demand for TV series that can travel across the world. Fernández Espeso has steered the effort for the company to make its productions more saleable by lensing in English.

TelevisaUnivision has sealed a deal with CBS and the NFL to carry Spanish-language broadcasts of Super Bowl Lviii next February.
The news was one of several announcements made Tuesday by the Hispanic media giant at its upfronts presentation at New York’s Pier 36, the complex along the East River known as Basketball City.
Vix, the streaming service launched in 2022 by TelevisaUnivision has now passed 30 million monthly active users, the company said. After initially coming to market with two tiers — one free and ad-supported and another pay tier branded Vix+ — the services combined into a streamlined, Vix-branded outlet earlier this year.
At Vix, the series Circo Gomez is now in development. The show, about a dysfunctional family running a shoddy traveling circus, derives from a first-look deal with Eugenio Derbez. In 2024, the streaming service will also debut El Extraño Retorno de Diana Salazar, a telenovela adaptation starring Angelique Boyer and Sebastian Rulli.

The deal was struck in partnership with the NFL and CBS Sports, which has the rights to show the game in English.
The details were released as part of TelevisaUnivision’s annual “upfront” presentation, when U.S. networks try to sell the bulk of their commercial programming ahead of their next programming cycle.
The company also disclosed that its ViX streaming outlet has more than 30 million monthly active users globally, with Pierluigi Gazzolo, the CEO of ViX noting that ” 80% of consumption on Vix is content no one else has and, importantly, 63% of users on ViX are incremental to the massive audience we serve on linear, which means greater cross-platform reach for all of you.”

TelevisaUnivision says that it will launch its Spanish-language SVOD service ViX+ on July 21, initially in the U.S., Mexico and Latin America. The service will cost 6.99 per month in the U.S. and MX119 in Mexico.

TelevisaUnivision said its Vix+ streaming service will launch July 21, at a monthly price of 6.99 in the U.S. and MX119 in Mexico.
The premium tier is joining the free, ad-supported Vix, which went live in March. The streaming moves followed the formation of TelevisaUnivision as a company earlier this year after the close of the 4.8 billion merger of Univision and the media holdings of Mexico’s Grupo Televisa.
Along with the U.S. and Mexico, Vix and Vix+ are rolling out across most of Spanish-speaking Latin America. TelevisaUnivision has said it believes Spanish-speaking streaming audiences are underserved. Vix+ will release more than 70 original series and movies in its first year. Between them, Vix and Vix+ will have 50,000 hours of programming, including 7,000 hours of live sports.
Original titles heading to Vix+ include María Felix, La Doña, La Mujer del Diablo and Mi Vecino El Cartel. The last of those is executive produced by Selena Gomez.

TelevisaUnivision reached a deal with Hemisphere Media Group to acquire Pantaya, a U.S. streaming platform for Spanish-language movies and TV series, snapping up the rival streamer to bolster the ViX service.
The companies didn’t disclose a value for the Pantaya deal. Last year, Hemisphere Media bought out the remaining 75 stake of Pantaya it didn’t own from Lionsgate for about 124 million in cash; Pantaya was launched in 2017 as a joint venture of Lionsgate and Hemisphere.
The pact will add Pantaya’s content, subscribers and management team to TelevisaUnivision’s own subscription-streaming platform, ViX+, which is expected to launch in the second half of 2022. Jorge Ramos, the star anchor and Emmy-winning journalist of U.S. Hispanic giant Univision for decades, will host a new celebrity interview program on ViX, the fledgling AVOD streaming service launched by TelevisaUnivision, the media juggernaut formed by the merger of Mexico’s Televisa and Univision early this year.
“Algo Personal con Jorge Ramos” (“Something Personal with Jorge Ramos”) is set to bow Sunday April 24 at 10 p.m. Et and will be available in the U.S. and most of Spanish-speaking Latin America.

Vix and Vix Plus — a two-tier, macro-scale Spanish-language streaming service with more than 50,000 hours of content across genres for users in the United States, Mexico and Latin America — will launch March 31 as the first lovechild of TelevisaUnivision since the two media giants united.
Vix may not signal the beginning of a trend, given that Pluto TV, Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV, Tubi and FuboTV have offered Spanish-language content since they entered the fray, and services that stream solely Spanish-language content, like Pantaya, have existed for several years. But it certainly serves as fuel for the growing demand for Spanish-language programming geared toward U.S. Hispanics and Latinos across the Americas.
This demand is further evidenced by Telemundo’s introduction of Tplus, a bilingual content hub on Peacock, earlier this year. The probability of Vix’s success will lie less in need than how it can distinguish itself in the increasingly bloated international streaming wars.
