Plot: Atlas Shepherd, a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. When plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it
Review: Jennifer Lopez has been in five films over the last two years, and another, Unstoppable, is still on the way. After her acclaimed 2019 performance in Hustlers, Lopez has starred in two romantic comedies, two action films, and a bizarre music video-slash-biopic monstrosity linked to her latest album. Now, her second Netflix feature in as many years, Atlas, aims to be J.Lo’s Marvel-esque blockbuster but falls short in every conceivable way. Directed by San Andreas helmer Brad Peyton, Atlas is a special effects-laden foray into the most cliched science fiction genre offering I have seen in a long time.

After watching J.Lo’s latest film, I began to wonder: Is Atlas the first pro-artificial intelligence movie of the decade? A prominent issue today is the use of AI. Atlas comes across as a movie from a studio trying to convince the public that AI is good for society. Initially, you might say no because Atlas spends so much time trying to destroy AI rather than protect it.
However, as the film progresses, the subtext and themes become so blatant that they’re impossible to miss. Atlas is the first pro-artificial intelligence film of its kind, practically propaganda. One of the film’s hidden messages is that AI doesn’t hurt society; the people who create it do. The other is that AI can be helpful if used in the right way.
The message from Atlas is on par with “guns don’t kill people, people don’t kill people,...

Arriving on the heels of “The Greatest Love Story Never Told” — a true milestone of superstar transparency where Jennifer Lopez expressed a clear-eyed view of her current career status — “Atlas” feels like an underwhelming return to the kind of projects that have maintained Lopez’ place in the Hollywood firmament, but not the ones that catapulted her there in the first place.
One of her few science fiction-themed films, its novelty alone should make it stand out, especially with Brad Peyton, a reliable purveyor of large-scale spectacle in the director’s chair. But a dearth of original ideas undercuts the appeal of “Atlas,” leaving Lopez to fend for herself in much the same way her character is forced to in the film’s formulaic story.
Lopez plays the title character, a coffee-addicted, “rigid and hostile” data analyst whose mother Val (Lana Parilla) developed the first artificial-intelligence being, Harlan (Simu Liu), when Atlas was just a child.

In recent years we’ve seen plenty of TV shows that seem like they should have been movies, and a few movies that might have been better as TV shows. Atlas suffers from a similar problem but fits into a third, lesser-seen category because, while it draws heavily from a number of classic sci-fi films, it’s a movie that seems like it really wants to be a video game.
Brad Peyton’s film opens with an expository montage introducing us to a world where an army of self-aware A.I.-driven robots, led by an android known as Harlan (Simu Liu), are waging an all-out war against humanity. And just as things appear to be reaching a point of no return, mankind whips out a surprise superweapon and quashes the rebellion, sending Harlan scarpering away on a rocket ship vowing that one day he’ll be back to finish what he started.

Netflix’s latest sci-fi thriller, Atlas, promises a gripping tale of artificial intelligence gone rogue but ultimately struggles under the weight of its ambitions. Directed by Brad Peyton and written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite, the film stars Jennifer Lopez as Atlas, a woman living in a future world who distrusts AI and is good at everything and smarter than everyone. The script teeters between high-concept and a showcase for Lopez’s versatility, and despite a decent premise for some futuristic thrills, Atlas often feels like a missed opportunity, hampered by sluggish pacing and a lack of depth in character development for everyone else except Atlas.
The film opens with a world in chaos. AI systems, once integrated into every facet of human life from transportation to medical care, have turned against their creators. The rebellion was instigated by Harlan (Simu Liu), an AI humanoid created by Shepard Robotics.

Technically, Atlas is a sci-fi flick. Set some unspecified number of years in the future, the Brad Peyton-directed feature concerns a data analyst (Jennifer Lopez) tasked with stopping “the world’s first AI terrorist,” a robot named Harlan (Simu Liu) who’d broken his own programming to orchestrate the slaughter of millions.
But Blade Runner this isn’t, and not just because its tepid script and uninspired visuals place Atlas within the ever-expanding box of Netflix movies best half-watched on planes. The robot war is mere pretext for the saga of a woman learning to love again, starring a celebrity whose public persona is largely built around her willingness to let herself love again. Never mind the fact that there is no actual human love interest — in structure and theme, Atlas is a J.Lo rom-com in shiny metal packaging.
Like its prickly heroine, though, Atlas takes time to reveal its true self.

Jennifer Lopez and her “Atlas” co-star Simu Liu shut down a reporter during a press junket in Mexico City for their new Netflix action movie after he asked Lopez if rumors are true she’s getting divorced from Ben Affleck. Rumors circulating online that Lopez and Affleck are ending their marriage have coincided with Lopez’s “Atlas” press tour, which included starry premieres in Los Angeles and Mexico.
“Ok, we’re not doing that,” Liu immediately told the reporter who asked about Affleck (via NBC News). “Thank you so much. We really appreciate it … come on, don’t come in here with that energy.
Lopez was even more blunt, telling the reporter: “You know better than that.”
Liu later heaped praise on Lopez, who both stars in and produced “Atlas.” Directed by “Rampage” and “San Andreas” filmmaker Brad Peyton, “Atlas” stars Lopez as a brilliant data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence.

As Jennifer Lopez walked the red carpet at a fan event for her new movie Atlas, Ben Affleck was nowhere to be seen. The 54-year-old seemed unphased despite rumors flying that there’s trouble in paradise. Lopez smiled with co-stars and feted the sci-fi action thriller — all with a simple wedding band on her ring finger.

Jennifer Lopez has been doing the media circuit for days now. First, she appeared at the Atlas premiere in LA sans her 8.5-carat green diamond engagement ring. The “Queen of Dance” opted for a simple and chic look, donning a white bandeau top and black skirt by Greta Constantine. Although her go-to green jewel was missing, Lopez accessorized with green gems of another kind.

Network executives once came to the upfronts on a mission to get advertisers excited about a handful of new series coming in the fall. This year, TV’s big players took a T-shirt cannon approach.
Every one of the major presentations during the May 13-15 sprint in midtown Manhattan — NBCUniversal, Fox, Disney, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix — emphasized the breadth of the company’s content offerings. Call it the everything-everywhere-all-at-once strategy for the streaming age.
As always, common themes emerged across the week. “Connections” was the buzziest of buzzwords used by executives pitching their hearts out from the stage. Without question, the song of Upfronts ’24, the one heard at most if not all events, was Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em.”
After sorting through the firehose of shows and spin, here are a few trends that stood out this year.
1) Star-Power Surge
Last year, the writers strike kept boldface names from appearing at the upfronts.

The overriding message this market? “There’s a lot”.
“A few weeks ago we thought there would a decent amount but, wow, there’s a lot”, one packaging agent told us.
They continued: “After a busy EFM, once again it feels like a healthy market in terms of product. The early responses from the sellers and indie buyers has been good. Those international distributors have re-stabilised their business somewhat, more so than the streamers. We’ll know more in a week but at the moment there are plenty of decently priced projects with meaningful actors, directors and scripts, and there is a good spread of projects.”
There’s Kristen Stewart returning on a vampire movie, Dwayne Johnson in a big-budget A24 wrestling movie, Mahershalah Ali in a gritty big-canvas crime movie, a couple of Jason Statham projects for those who want brawn, historical drama with Russell Crowe, a YA empowerment pic with Chris Pratt,...

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. The movie is set in 1963 as breakfast cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post compete to become the first company to create a morning pastry. Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer also star, with Hugh Grant more than likely to steal the whole film with a turn as Tony the Tiger.

Jennifer Lopez confronts her mistrust of technology to battle artificial intelligence villain Harlan, played by Simu Liu, in the latest trailer for Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi movie Atlas.
In the first trailer for Atlas, Lopez’s data-driven counter-terrorism analyst Atlas Shepherd first showed her deep distrust of AI when disaster strikes. But the new trailer sees Liu introduced as the AI character Harlan, whom Atlas has long hunted and is now shown to have nearly ended humanity after first being engineered to advance it.
So to save the the future of humanity from AI, Atlas, in the latest teaser trailer, learns to trust AI. As dystopian, ground-pounding carnage dominates the trailer, Lopez rockets off to a far-off planet to capture a renegade robot and teams up with a computer program named Smith in what appears, at times, like buddy comedy.

"My primary protocol is to keep you alive." Netflix has launched an official trailer for a sci-fi action movie called Atlas, starring Jennifer Lopez. Arriving to watch this May – it's yet another star-driven expensive spectacle that will be streaming this summer. Also another artificial intelligence-related sci-fi movie, since it's the big tech trend of the moment, there have to be movies about it. Atlas is set in a bleak future, where an A.I. soldier has determined that the only way to end war is to end humanity. Lopez plays a data analyst with a deep distrust of A.I., who joins a mission to capture a renegade robot. When plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it. Co-starring Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla, & Mark Strong. From the looks of it, this seems like pro-a.
