The 2024 Hobart International is only a Wta 250 tournament, but the draw promises a lot of exciting action regardless.
Held from January 8th to 13th, ahead of the season's first Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne, the Hobart International serves as a great opportunity for players to prepare themselves for the first major of the year.
Many took this chance, and while the majority of the higher-ranked players entered the 2024 Adelaide International draw, there are still many who want to play a Wta 250 tournament, and the leading name in the draw is Elise Mertens, who will be the top seed.
However, the Belgian won't have an easy task at the tournament, as already in her first match, she'll take on the 2022 Australian Open finalist, Danielle Collins, who dropped to the 54th place in the Wta Rankings in recent seasons.

Iga Swiatek is playing really strong tennis in 2024, but she's not one to declare herself a favorite ahead of the Australian Open.
Swiatek has been a fascinating tennis player for much of her career. A ruthless player on the tennis court who delivers bagels like it's nothing while a pretty mellow personality off the court.
It's an interesting contrast, but don't be fooled; she's very dedicated to her craft, which these early matches in 2024 show. She's an even better player this year and is by far the most likely to win the Australian Open.
Her performances have been stellar, and she's aware of it, yet speaking at the 2024 United Cup, she was dismissive about being the favourite for the Australian Open.
As she often likes to say, she just wants to be a good player and improve every day. That's the goal, and whatever happens on the court is secondary.

Aryna Sabalenka will want to challenge Iga Swiatek in 2024 again, and she started her charge well at the 2024 Brisbane International, beating Lucia Bronzetti in straight sets.
The Polish player already got to show her qualities in 2024, and she did show that her dominance is nowhere to be gone. While Swiatek competes at the United Cup, the Belarusian plays at the Wta 500 tournament in Brisbane as the top seed, and she showed that she means business already in her first match at the event.
As the top seed, Sabalenka had a first-round bye, and in the second round of the event, she took on Lucia Bronzetti, who overcame Ashlyn Krueger in the first round, and whom she never met before.
Already in the first game of the match, the world no. 2 faced a break point, but from there, it was a dominant ride that never seemed to be stopping.

The 2024 Brisbane International will be one of the most exciting Wta 500 tournaments of the season, and the tournament's draw has been released.
With the new season starting, there's not many more exciting tournaments than the 2024 Brisbane International, running from December 31st, 2023, until January 7th, 2024.
While the start of the new season is a good enough of a story line, there's another major storyline, and that's the return of a four-time Grand Slam champion, Naomi Osaka, who will play her first tournament in over a year.
The Japanese player is motivated to come back and she already knows her first opponent in Brisbane, as Osaka will take on Tamara Korpatsch, with her possible second-round match being against the former world no. 1, Karolina Pliskova.
But Osaka isn't the only exciting player at the tournament, as all players will want to fight for their share of the prize money and points. Aryna Sabalenka,...

Caroline Wozniacki and Eugenie Bouchard are slated to officially face each other on the opening weekend to kick off the Dallas Open, an Atp-only event.
For the second year in a row, two Wta players will herald the start of Tour-level tennis in Dallas, Texas. Last year, Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens were brought in as replacements for Venus Williams and Danielle Collins and played an exhibition match dubbed the Women's Tennis Classic.
The tournament organizers have already planned next year's edition by inviting former Wta No. 1 Wozniacki, who is set to resume her comeback from retirement in January, and 2014 Wimbledon finalist Bouchard to entertain a vibrant American crowd.
Bouchard's long-term future as a tennis pro remains in doubt, having committed to play pickleball in 2024 and even announcing her first official tournament playing the paddle sport.

Danielle Collins carved out a pretty solid career for herself with a Grand Slam final on her resume; however, it wasn't always an easy journey.
The story of Collins is one we've seen many times, at least in the beginning. It was a humble beginning for the American, who doesn't come from a privileged background. We've seen many stories of tennis being a privileged people sport, and while it is expensive, it's not always that.
There are many examples of that not being that way; however, the road for these players is pretty tough. Novak Djokovic talked about it often, and the story of Collins is pretty similar.
She grew up in a two-parent home but living paycheck to paycheck. It's why she became interested in financial literacy, something that grew into a passion that she supports as she revealed in a recent talk to the Wta.

The first Wta 500 event of the 2024 season will begin in earnest on New Year's Day, where eight of the world's Top 20 players will lead the pack at the Brisbane International.
Primarily played on outdoor hard courts and serving as one of the Australian Open warm-up tournaments, the Brisbane International will return to the calendar after a four-year absence. Tournament organizers have wasted no time brokering deals to bring the most prominent names on the women's circuit to the event.
Firstly, World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka will look to continue the fine trend of her fellow compatriots at this event. Since Brisbane International was incepted in 2009, a Belarusian player has reached the finals on four occasions (Victoria Azarenka accounts for two titles).
Sabalenka is the top seed and will be joined by her good friend Elena Rybakina in gracing the courts in Brisbane. The big-serving Kazakh has previously won on Australian soil...

The USA is out of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals as the Czech Republic beat them in the crucial tie, sending their country to the semi-finals.
It was a mammoth job to begin with because the Czech Republic really needed only one win from singles to give them the best shot to win the tie. They were always strongly favored in doubles, because they had Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova playing.
They are not only one of the best doubles pairings in the world, but they play together all the time, which means the chemistry is great. That's a rare thing to have. So Danielle Collins won the first important match; however, Sofia Kenin had no chance against Marketa Vondrousova in the second.

Marketa Vondrousova did what she was supposed to do by beating Sofia Kenin to keep her Czech Republic in play at the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
The last time we saw Marketa Vondrousova play was recently at the Wta Finals, where she played pretty badly, but she didn't like the court very much there.
Back in Europe and indoors, Vondrousova looked much more comfortable in a must-win match for her Czech Republic. Danielle Collins gave the US its first point in this crucial tie, but now it's 1-1.
The doubles a bit later will determine who moves on to the semi-finals, and the Czech Republic will have Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova on the courts, a very strong doubles team.
When it comes to this match, it was pretty much a no-contest. The Czech player proved her status as one of the best players this year by completely smashing Kenin,...

Sofia Kenin and Danielle Collins won the singles matches for the United States against Switzerland to secure the win in the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
Team US started off the Billie Jean King Cup Finals with a win beating Switzerland easily. The first match of the day featured Danielle Collins playing against Celine Naef, and it was a pretty expected win for the American.
The first set was really close as she needed a tie-break, but she established control easily in the second, finishing it off, 6-1. The second match featured Sofia Kenin against Viktorija Golubic.
Unlike last year, when Belinda Bencic powered her country, the Swiss team is missing some firepower this year. Bencic is in Seville, but she's pregnant and not playing.

Coco Gauff is excited to work with new USA Billie Jean King Cup Team Captain Lindsay Davenport after she was appointed to the role.
US tennis has been amazing throughout history, and there is always an aspiration to win the team competition. The Davis Cup team disappointed recently by failing to qualify for the Final Eight, but the women's team will play at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
The team is pretty strong, even though it lacks the biggest stars. Coco Gauff has played at the Finals for Team USA, but she won't play for the team this time around . Jessica Pegula, as the second-best player, also won't play at the Finals, but the new captain still found willing participants.
She picked Madison Keys, Sofia Kenin, Danielle Collins, Taylor Townsend, and Sloane Stephens for the competition. It's a pretty strong squad overall and can certainly do some damage at the event.

Gauff and Mertens know each other rather well, having played both in singles and doubles on the Wta Tour against each other. The Belgian was on the brink of defeat against Danielle Collins but rallied in spectacular fashion to win the match in three sets,
She won't be able to do the same against Gauff if she falls behind the way she did against Collins because Gauff is just playing that much better. Her recent run in Cincinnati finally unlocked a new level for her, and beating that will take a serious effort.
Mertens had some good moments in this matchup in the past but when Gauff played the way she could, things generally went her way easily.
Head-to-head:

Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva played earlier this year at Roland Garros, and a couple of months later, the same result happened at the 2023 US Open .
Back then, Andreeva won the opening set, but Gauff quickly bounced back to win the match . Fast forward a few months later, and we have an even more impressive Gauff who recently added her first Wta 1000 trophy .
The American was hugely favoured in this matchup and largely justified that with her play on the court. Andreeva showed weakness in the first match here at the US Open, so her losing comfortably to Gauff should not surprise anyone.
The first set was an interesting one. Andreeva broke Gauff in the first game of the match, but obviously, that didn't end up being a problem as Gauff broke back immediately and took a 4-1 lead. She kept applying pressure and won the opening set 6-3.

Danielle Collins shed some light on the heated altercation between herself and Maria Sakkari at the Canadian Open.
The two players clashed over a ball abuse incident in the early part of the second set of their second-round match in Montreal. Sakkari had smacked the ball in frustration on the ground which bounced straight into the stands where fans were seated.
This prompted a reaction from Collins who berated the Greek to the chair umpire and asked her if she saw the incident. As Sakkari was trying to argue her case that the ball didn't hit anyone, Collins said, 'shut your mouth'.
Eventually, the chair umpire Julie Kjendlie managed to throw cold water on the situation and normalcy ensued. Collins would go on to win that match, and looking back, the American spoke about that incident again and said she got villainized for calling out the Greek's ball abuse incident.

According to former legendary player Martina Navratilova , Coco Gauff is ready to receive the torch from Serena Williams .
Coco Gauff was long described as the player who will lead American tennis in the future as Serena Williams once did. It was easy to understand why that comparison was made; they are incredible players in their own right.
It took Gauff a bit more to get to the stage where she's ready, as we've been seeing it only lately. Big trophies like the one won in Cincinnati recently cement her as one of the best, and she's starting to believe it, too. It's the moment everyone was waiting for.
I think she’s ready to [receive] the torch but also I think she realises that there’s some big shoes to fill. So I’m not sure that Coco would be thinking so much on a macro level. American women’s tennis has been in great shape.

Coco Gauff should have the easiest path to the title at the 2023 US Open , according to the AI Draw Analysis made by the tournament.
Artificial intelligence is getting more and more utilized in the world of tennis , and after this year's Wimbledon, the US Open followed and introduced some interesting AI-powered features that fans would be able to use during the event's duration from August 28th to September 10th.
While AI commentary is one of those features , the draw analysis is another one. Fans had a chance to observe that already at Wimbledon, where Iga Swiatek , according to the AI, received the easiest draw out of all players .
Now, the situation is a little bit different. Through their sponsor, Ibm, the US Open is providing the Ibm AI Draw Analysis that shows which players received the 'most favourable draw.' Naturally, the highest-ranked players are also leading the ranking of the most favourable draws,...

The 2023 US Open will be held from August 28 to September 10th, and with the last major of the season, multiple storylines are unfolding after the draw reveal.
Iga Swiatek enters the 2023 US Open as a defending champion but also as the world number 1, the same as her colleague from the Atp Tour, Carlos Alcaraz. But the young Pole may face extra pressure at the New York major , defending not just her title but also the world no. 1 spot.
But as always, the 22-year-old will want to focus on one match at a time, and the first one will see the top seed play against Rebecca Peterson . On the other side of the draw will be her main rival for the title and the world no. 1 spot , Aryna Sabalenka .

The upcoming US Open will give a chance to many players to do something good, but a couple of them, like Mirra Andreeva , stick out.
Due to various factors, the upcoming US Open promises to be an excellent event. It's the final Grand Slam of the year, and it generally features stellar fan support and significant media coverage, making it a rather unique experience on the Wta Tour.
Plenty of players will pass through the gates of Flushing Meadows, and we bring you some underdogs that might do great things in the upcoming fortnight. Although it's clear who are the top favourites , there's always a chance of major upset.
5. Leylah Fernandez
As a former finalist at this event, Leylah Fernandez has nothing but good memories of New York. Her career didn't quite go as many thought it would after the final, though she's looked pretty good lately. If she continues to play well,...

Wta No. 1 Iga Swiatek has learned to take losses up her chin and reckons with so many matches coming thick and fast on tour, she'll always get a second chance.
Swiatek bounced back from her Canadian Open defeat to Jessica Pegula in scintillating style, thumping Danielle Collins 6-1, 6-0 to progress into the Round of 16 in Cincinnati . Speaking at the Tennis Channel desk after the win at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters , Swiatek gave an eloquent answer on how she has learned to overcome close losses in recent months.
In the past, the Polish star has been overwhelmed in the aftermath of losing matches , crying on the court or during her post-match press conferences. But the state of the tour has taught Swiatek a great lesson in resilience, and she's not had time to process losses when tournaments come so quickly and get another chance straight after.

Iga Swiatek talked about her recurring routine behind the scenes that helps her to attain peak fitness levels during matches.
Speaking to the media following her 6-1, 6-0 rout of Danielle Collins in Cincinnati , Swiatek discussed how she takes care of her body and what her overall routine looks like. The 22-year-old reserved all the credit to physiotherapist Maciej Ryszczuk, describing him as a physio and conditioning coach in one.
Despite letting the cat out of the bag, Swiatek jokingly put the rest of the Tour on notice against 'stealing' her physio. Swiatek goes on to explain how the stretched calendar has left her with 'too many' practice days and weeks. Instead, Swiatek is practicing less while on tour in order to stay fresh during matches.
"Well, you know, years of work, so it's hard to describe that quickly, but Maciej is a great specialist. For sure without him I wouldn't be in that place.

Cincinnati (US), Aug 17 (Ians) In a showdown between former Grand Slam champions, No.4 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan held off Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday to make the Round of 16 at the Cincinnati Masters.
Last year’s Wimbledon champion Rybakina took 2 hours and 17 minutes to pull off the come-from-behind victory on Wednesday night and edge ahead 3-2 in her head-to-head with 2017 Roland Garros titlist Ostapenko.
Rybakina will face Italian qualifier Jasmine Paolini on Thursday for a quarterfinal spot. Paolini defeated fellow qualifier Cristina Bucsa of Spain 6-1, 6-3 earlier on Wednesday.
On the other hand, World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka was also pushed to three sets in her opener, holding off No.192 Ann Li 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 to advance in 2 hours and 3 minutes.
A semifinalist last year, Sabalenka struggled against Li’s all-court game before steeling herself in the third set to wrench back control of the match and get the win.

Iga Swiatek took Danielle Collins for the second time in two weeks, and she proved much more deadly this time, smacking her in two sets at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters .
The previous match they played was last week in Montreal , and it was a 3-set match that could have been a two-set match. Boosted by that experience, Swiatek approached this match much more seriously and proved far more clinical.
Cincinnati doesn't play exactly like Montreal but today was relatively warm, and the balls flew quickly. It gave the Polish player a chance to use her precision and shot-making in her favour against Collins who really wasn't playing a really good match.
Swiatek employed the exact blueprint as she did last week (attack the second serve) and was deadly with it. The main contributing factor to that was Collins serving rather poorly compared to last week, which gave Iga plenty of looks on the second serve.

Iga Swiatek played Danielle Collins last week in Montreal, and she's going to play her this week at the Cincinnati Masters as well.
Danielle Collins is back to playing solid tennis as the American puts forward more great performances. After a great effort last week at the Wta 1000 event in Montreal, Collins ousted Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to earn another chance to take on Iga Swiatek.
They played last week, and it was a win for Swiatek though the American battled fatigue for much of it because of many matches in a short period. More broadly, they played a handful of times so far, and Collins won once. It happened during her Australian Open run to the final, and the world number one has improved dramatically since then.

Elina Svitolina withdrew from the 2023 Cincinnati Masters shortly before her first-round match against Caroline Wozniacki .
It should have been a match of two mothers at the Wta 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, also called the Western & Southern Open, but that won't be happening as the 28-year-old Ukrainian is unable to compete due to an injury that started already at Wimbledon.
Only a few weeks ago, Svitolina had an incredible semifinal run at Wimbledon , but it seems that it wasn't without picking up a minor foot injury. Although she then participated at the event in Washington, losing to Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals , the Montreal campaign was even less successful.
Already in her first match in Montreal, Svitolina lost to Danielle Collins , and it was obvious that she wasn't at her best. Now, we know why as the Ukrainian withdrew from the 2023 Cincinnati Masters, citing a foot pain.

Iga Swiatek says she has 'some work to do' regarding the change of physical tennis balls at tournaments in the wake of her three-set defeat to Jessica Pegula at the Canadian Open .
The top-seeded Swiatek was second best for much of the afternoon on Saturday , losing 2-6, 7-6, 4-6. Swiatek set an unwanted record for herself this season, ceding the most breaks in a match with 11. The only other time her serve was broken so many times in the past year was nine when she lost to Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai last season.
Nevertheless, Swiatek's loss doesn't harm her chances of being the No. 1 seed at the US Open in two weeks' time. Her closest challenger Sabalenka was also sent packing much earlier in Montreal , giving her a free pass in that regard.

Elina Svitolina was part of a round one blockbuster in Montreal, and she'll be part of that at the Cincinnati Masters as well, against Caroline Wozniacki .
Svitolina didn't have the best possible draw in Montreal getting a qualifier. Generally, a qualifier is not a big deal, but a qualifier named Danielle Collins is not what you want to see. The American smashed her comfortably , beginning what was a solid run that ended against Iga Swiatek .
It's not going to get any easier for Svitolina as she'll face Caroline Wozniacki this time around, another blockbuster that should pack the stands. Wozniacki made her return in Montreal as well, winning one match before losing to Marketa Vondrousova. It's going to be a very interesting match between players that know each other rather well.
Head-to-head:
It's been a while since they played, which is natural as Wozniacki spent the last three years away from the sport.

Iga Swiatek continued her Canadian Open Montreal run by overcoming a very strong Danielle Collins in three sets.
Danielle Collins made a return this week in Montreal, and it was a spectacular one in many ways. She showed off the full experience g iving tennis fans plenty of amazing tennis and some personality too . Beating Iga Swiatek isn't something she's unfamiliar with, either.
They played at the Australian Open in the year Collins made the final and it was a proper smacking by the American. Swiatek was returning the favour early on in this one. A 3-0 lead to start and then a 5-1 lead as well.
Collins finally found her shots but couldn't do much to completely turn around the score. After sealing the opening set 6-3, Swiatek opened the second one with yet another break. The American had a lot of trouble outhitting her opponent, who was on every ball,...

Danielle Collins is rather known as a player with a lot of passion in her tennis though she can show some attitude as well.
During a heated clash against Maria Sakkari at the 2023 Canadian Open in Montreal , Collins and Sakkari exchanged words on the court . It happened after Sakkari slammed a ball with Collins pointing out to the umpire how reckless the situation was. Sakkari wasn't impressed and explained that it was harmless, after which Collins told her, 'shut your mouth'.
Eventually, the match continued, and Collins won easily, but the situation created a lot of discussion among fans on X. Plenty of them pointed out how disrespectful Collins behaved, and fellow player Liam Broady chimed in.
It doesn't matter what situation on a tennis court you should never speak to another human like that.

Iga Swiatek overcame multiple rain interruptions and a stoic opponent to reach the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open for the first time.
More importantly, Swiatek's win over Muchova maintains her firm grip on the No. 1 in the Wta Rankings, and she will stay in the top spot at least for another week regardless of what Aryna Sabalenka will do in Montreal . Now that she's settled one goal, Swiatek can aim for the title this weekend.
Earlier this week, Swiatek celebrated her 71st consecutive week atop the Wta rankings , tying Caroline Wozniacki in 10th place among the players with most weeks at No. 1. Swiatek sat top with 9,490 points which was 744 points more than Sabalenka in second place with 8,746.
And the permutation was pretty straightforward. If Swiatek makes the quarterfinals or better, she'd add to her points tally , which would surpass Sabalenka's projected maximum points - 9,541 - by virtue of winning the title.

Top seed Iga Swiatek will face unseeded American Danielle Collins in the quarterfinal of the 2023 Canadian Open in Montreal on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Iga Swiatek overcame a double rain delay to progress into the quarterfinal in Montreal for the first time. She defeated Karolina Muchova in their rematch of the French Open final 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 . Swiatek knew the bare minimum she had to do to keep her No. 1 ranking next week was to reach the last eight stage, and which she has.
Her next opponent will be American Danielle Collins who has surprisingly caught fire at the start of the summer hard courts. Collins arrived in Canada at the weekend very cold, scoring a measly two main draw wins since the start of the Indian Wells tournament.
But she has rediscovered her mojo, winning a pair of qualifying matches in three sets. Since then, she hasn't dropped a set in...

Maria Sakkari and Danielle Collins were involved in a heated altercation during their second-round clash at the Canadian Open over a ball abuse incident.
In the early goings of the second set , Sakkari was serving at 1-2, and fired her first serve long to which Collins returned it back. The Washington finalist reacted hastily to the fault serve by firing the ball into the ground and which bounce straight into the stands. Although it was not clear from the TV angle where the ball landed, Collins certainly had a good view.
Sakkari quickly put her hand up to apologize to the fans in the stand, but Collins wasn't letting the Greek off the hook for what she felt was reckless behavior, asking the chair umpire: 'Did you just see that? Did you see what happened?'
'It didn't hit anyone, it was on the ground,' Sakkari tried to plead her innocence,...

Danielle Collins is back to winning ways after beating Elina Svitolina in the first round of the Canadian Open , and her reward is playing Maria Sakkari .
It's not the best reward, frankly, but the American won't mind it as she's been missing these types of scenarios. Being able to compete on the court regularly and actually win matches means a lot, so she won't mind.
It was a good start, a win over Elina Svitolina for the 3rd win at the Wta 1000 event. She had to play the qualifiers which tell you all you need to know about how far she's fallen due to her injury problems. Sakkari also had problems for much of this year, but she, too, is in good form right now.
A run to the final in Washington should have certainly boosted her confidence before this match, even if she was beaten easily by Coco Gauff...

Elina Svitolina started well but fell apart later on as Danielle Collins soared to a huge win in straight sets in Montreal .
This Canadian Open round-one matchup was supposed to be an epic one that would deliver some great tennis. We had some great moments, but it fell way short of an actual epic tennis match. Elina Svitolina has been in top form lately , playing some very good tennis, but today wasn't it. Not even remotely close.
Oddly enough, Svitolina started well. She created problems for Collins and had break chances, but she didn't use them, and as soon as the American broke her serve, Svitolina crumbled. It was an odd match, as we've seen her battle hard in most of her matches, but today she was simply overwhelmed.
Collins had the advantage of having played a few matches already in Montreal, having had to play the qualifiers, but this...

The first day of the Canadian Open heavily featured rain, and Elina Svitolina has a plan of how to deal with that.
The Ukranian has been a long-time player, one that has experienced rain-infested Wta events in the past. It's a tough thing to navigate due to the uncertainty of the schedule. Your match can get moved to another court, it might start and stop more than once, and keeping focus through all of that can be challenging.
She was asked about her ways of dealing with the uncertainty and like with so many things in tennis - it's all about adjusting. It's a sport of constant adjusting, and you either get used to it and manage or you get crushed by it.
Well, to be fair, you want to play the match, but you have to adjust. You cannot control the weather. You cannot -- I have no say on that,...

The 2023 Citi Open in Washington produced probably one of the strongest draw s for the Wta 500 event in the calendar.
Running from July 31st to August 6th, the 2023 Citi Open in Washington, also called the 2023 Mubadala Citi DC Open for sponsorship reasons, is one of the first tournaments during the North American swing, which ends with the fourth major of the season, the US Open.
Last year, Liudmila Samsonova won the tournament and this year, she'll defend her title as the eighth seed. Starting in the first round, the Russian will play against one of the wild cards , home player Danielle Collins.
But the 2022 Australian Open finalist isn't the only American in the draw, in fact, there are many more. The top-seeded Jessica Pegula is one of them and already in the second round, she'll possibly face one of the Grand Slam champions in the draw, Sofia Kenin , who has...
