Along with the shift of animated movie Transformers One by one week in September this year, Paramount pushed the Aang Avatar animated movie from Oct. 10, 2025 to Jan. 30, 2026.
The Lauren Montgomery directed animated film stars the voice of Dave Bautista (this was made official at CinemaCon last week), Eric Nam, Dionne Quan, Jessica Matten and Roman Zaragoza. William Mata is co-director.
The big screen movie is based on Avatar: The Last Airbender which was created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko. Producers are Konietzko, Dante Dimartino, Latifa Ouaou and Maryann Garger.
The Last Airbender is big business: the new live-action Netflix series around the globe has clocked an estimated 60M views. M. Night Shyamalan’s only franchise movie in his canon is the live-action take of the Nickelodeon show which grossed close to $320M worldwide.

Transformers One, is going now on Sept. 20 instead of Sept. 13.
The move gets Transformers One further away from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice which is going to eat up the September box office. However, already on this weekend is DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Wild Robot. Two big animated movies are certainly not going to live on the same weekend.
The release date change also comes in the wake of the great reception that Transformers One received out of CinemaCon last week. Late September has been a rich bed for family animated movies including Hotel Transylvania 2 ($48.2M opening), Hotel Transylvania ($42.5M opening) and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs ($34M opening).
Transformers One is among one of Paramount’s highest tested movies in the studio’s history.
Today, Paramount outdid itself and launched the first trailer for the Optimus Prime and Megatron origin buddy movie — in space on a weather balloon. Watch Chris Hemsworth...

With If Anything Happens I Love You, directors Michael Govier and Will McCormack, and producer Maryann Garger set out to examine the grief and suffering caused by school shootings.
The Netflix short tells the story of two parents grieving over the loss of their daughter in a school shooting. “We kept reading and hearing and seeing about the seemingly endless gun violence in America,” says McCormack, “and we thought, what would it be like to tackle this story from the point of view of parents who’ve lost a child?”
The parents try to cope with their loss by isolating themselves and disconnecting from their emotions. “It’s an elegy on grief,” says Govier.
Using a hand-drawn style and muted colors, the most dynamic characters in the film are the shadows of the parents, which are disengaged from the actual characters. “Michael pitched me a beautiful image of these shadow...

The Oscar race for animated short reflects the zeitgeist and the ascendance of streaming. And all five nominees explore the turmoil of a divided country and world, where the need for unity is the best salvation for attaining happiness and closure.
The favorite is Netflix’s first animated short, “If Anything Happens I Love You,” about a grieving mother and father visited by shadows of themselves and their deceased young daughter (who was the victim of a school shooting). The monochromatic, hand-drawn short, directed by Will McCormack (who wrote the original “Toy Story 4” script with Rashida Jones) and Michael Govier (“Conan”), boasts an illustrated style that represents haunting memories, bolstered by an all-female animation team supervised by CalArts graduate Youngran Nho. Laura Dern executive produced the short and Maryann Garger (“The Lego Ninjago Movie”) produced with Gary Gilbert (“La La Land”), Gerald Chamales (“The Irishman”), and Govier.

Laura Dern on Gun Safety and How Netflix’s Animated ‘If Anything Happens I Love You’ Addresses Grief
Executive producer Laura Dern wanted to leap on board when she and producing partner Jayme Lemons (also an executive producer), had the chance to support the animated short, “If Anything Happens I Love You.”
The story follows the aftermath of tragedy as parents grieve the loss of a child and through a dialogue-free narrative, tracks them as they grapple with their emotional void.
Dern spoke with Variety about how the animation team was all-female. She also talks about partnering with the non-profit organization Everytown for Gun Safety, and why it was important for her to be a part of the narrative for the short which drops on Netflix Nov. 20.
Why was it important for you, as an executive producer to tell this story?
Laura Dern: Jayme Lemons and I wanted to leap on board as executive producers and support [writers and directors] Michael Govier and Will McCormack in any way we could to...

Netflix has acquired its first animated shorts for Oscar consideration. There are three: “If Anything Happens I Love You,” an elegy about grief following a school shooting, directed by Will McCormack (who wrote the original “Toy Story 4” script with Rashida Jones) and Michael Govier (“Conan”); “Canvas,” about a Black painter who seeks to rekindle his artistic passion after the passing of his wife, directed by former Pixar animator Frank E. Abney III (“Soul”); and “Cops and Robbers,” directed by Arnon Manor (indie web series “Mondays”) and Timothy Ware-Hill (“Kinky Boots” national tour), inspired by Ware-Hill’s poem about the racially motivated murder of Ahmaud Arbery earlier this year in Georgia.

Among the upcoming films on display here at Comic Con is Astro Boy, based on the popular Japanese manga series. From Todd's recent report on Astro Boy footage: "Astro Boy is based on Osamu Tekuza's 1952 manga, which was developed into a television series in 1963 and subsequently enjoyed multiple incarnations and reinventions in print and on film. The 2009 feature film promises to stay largely faithful to the sleek and simple design of the character, but with a few updates to his look and his mythology. As the second film from burgeoning animation studio Imagi after 2007's Tmnt, Bowers said that he wanted to make sure that the story was both fun and substantive. [Read more]

There were three significant sci-fi themed panels at Comic-Con on Thursday: Astroboy, Battlestar Galactica, and James Cameron’s Avatar. Alas, despite waiting three hours in line for “Avatar”, I only managed to catch the final 5 minutes or so of the panel, just enough to hear Cameron saying that he plans to show the first 15 minutes of “Avatar” for free in Imax theaters. I was not, unfortunately, in time to catch the 25 minutes of footage that Cameron brought with him. Earlier in the day, I did manage to catch the “Astroboy” and BSG panels. Observations from the two below. The big news coming out of the “Astroboy” panel was that Samuel L. Jackson and Charlize Theron have roles in the movie. In the case of Jackson, director David Bowers called it a cameo. He didn’t say either/or about Theron’s, though. Attending the panel were Bowers, producer Maryann Garger,...

A new CG-animated version of the classic manga and anime, "Astro Boy," created by the "god of manga," Osamu Tezuka in the 1950's, debuted clips at Comic-Con 2009. Introduced and moderated by animation historian Jerry Beck, Sdcc held a panel today to promote the fall release of Astro Boy . On hand to speak was director David Bowers, Producer Maryann Garger and stars Freddie Highmore (Astro) and Kristen Bell (Cora). Q: How hard was it to place this classic, iconic character into a 2009 state-of the art movie that would satisfy audiences? Bowers: Well, it wasn't easy. It's a huge responsibility. The comic is a classic. The first two TV shows are classics as well. It was interesting because it's a movie for 2009. Looking at the original, it was created in the 1950's. Although it's a little retro now, it was very modern and cutting edge at the time. I really wanted to make an "Astro Boy" fresh for a new audience. I want them,...
