Magnify has acquired global and U.S. sales rights (excluding Canada and Benelux) to “Wildhood” director Bretten Hannam’s supernatural thriller “Place of Ghosts,” which is set to go into production in August 2024.
Lorna Lee Torres, Magnify’s senior VP of sales, and Austin Kennedy, director of global sales, will be launching the project in Cannes.
In the film, estranged siblings Mise’l and Antle are forced to reunite after being visited by a vengeful spirit. They venture into the “Place of Ghosts,” a primeval forest of the Mi’kmaq people where time and memory blend together. As they journey deeper into the forest, the dark spirit continues to grow, manifesting in terrifying forms that the siblings must confront.
“Bretten Hannam has crafted an ambitious and thematically rich indigenous horror/fantasy that engages with political and social history and adds to the expanding world of original genre film,” Torres said.

Was that for real?
Is Jessica Knight out the door as it appeared after NCIS Season 21 Episode 10?
And did the only intrateam romance in the current NCIS franchise go with her?
It's been a wacky season for TV as the networks slash and cut, then slash some more following the new writers' and actors' contracts.
And it is conceivable that Katrina Law wanted out. She joined the Hawaii Five-0 cast for what turned out to be its 10th and final season, with its cancellation a surprise to many. Maybe she wanted to get a jump this time, in case Season 22 is it for NCIS.
That's not out of the realm of possibility. After all, the show's favorite characters are still featured on CBS/Paramount+, with NCIS: Origins (young Gibbs), and the unnamed Tony and Ziva project. Why pay for the Mother Ship as well?
Also, it's not unusual to have surprise departures on NCIS finales,...

It appears that the NCIS team will look a bit different when the long-running CBS drama returns in the fall with Season 22.
Heading into this year’s season finale, we knew that Director Vance would present Special Agent Knight with a unique opportunity — to be the React team’s chief training officer, based out of Camp Pendleton in Southern California. And while Jess was quick to tell Vance she’d mull the offer, she dragged her heels telling colleague and partner Dr. Jimmy Palmer about the decision before her. The Chicago P.D. hiatus ended with a new episode on Wednesday night.
When we last saw the show, Dante Torres was finishing up an undercover case to bring down a drug boss, Rafel Perez (Julio Cedillo).
During that case, Torres became romantically involved with the wife of Rafel Perez, Gloria Perez (Yara Martinez).
In a dramatic conclusion, Gloria killed Rafel. Rather than run, she told Torres she was remaining in Chicago. It could mean the story circles back later.
Also, earlier this season, the Chicago P.D. cast added actress Bojana Novakovic as Detective Josephine Petrovic. The quirky detective helped Intelligence on several cases, but Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) became suspicious of her and discovered a drinking problem.
A serial killer also remained on the loose, but this new episode was focused on a separate case.

There is still so much we don't know about Hailey Upton.
The series has a way of sprinkling little tidbits about its characters into installments, but they can still go years being as enigmatic as the day we first met them.
And with a few installments remaining before the character departs, Chicago Pd Season 11 Episode 10 provided some insight into her background, unlike anything we've seen before.
Regardless of how one may feel about the character, it was genuinely nice to have it, particularly during an hour with such a strong and riveting case.
The personal character exploration through a great case was at its best. They essentially balanced the Hailey and Ruthie/Hope situation well, with the most daunting aspect of the hour being how they shoehorned Petrovic into the mix.
By now, whether we love or loathe them, the character-centric installments that result in many characters benched or flat-out...

Julio Torres is crediting Ryan Gosling for being a “world-builder” of a comedic actor.
The “Problemista” writer/director/star told Entertainment Weekly that Gosling had more than a few sketch ideas when he returned to host “SNL.” Torres previously worked as a “Saturday Night Live” writer, and also returned with a skit per Gosling’s request to follow-up their viral “Papyrus” sequence parodying the font used in James Cameron’s “Avatar.” And much like the “Avatar” franchise itself, Gosling had a vision for making multiple installments of the “Papyrus” sketch.
“With no Ryan Gosling, there’s no ‘Papyrus 1,’ and there’s no ‘Papyrus 2,’” Torres said. “The first one was this sort of throwaway joke I made that he really latched on to. He was like, ‘Oh, I think maybe there’s an idea there,’ and I was like, ‘I really don’t think so.’ I didn’t tell him that,...

The strike-shortened NCIS Season 21 is coming to an end. The penultimate episode is Episode 9, entitled “Prime Cut.” The team is headed down to Texas. There, they just want to talk to the suspected killer in the death of a Marine captain. What kind of trouble could the team get into down there? It looks like there will be plenty of trouble in the CBS military procedural series.
Here are the details of the episode entitled “Prime Cut.”

While fans are desperately waiting to finally see Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson embrace his new look as the Captain in his upcoming solo movie Captain America 4, they aren’t too sure about Danny Ramirez’s beloved character Joaquín Torres. In fact, if anything, they are deeply worried about the latter’s character in the movie after recent updates about Captain America: Brave New World.
Captain America: Brave New World (2025) | Marvel Studios
A major reason behind this reaction from fans is the superhero costume that Ramirez would be sporting in the film after his character replaced Wilson to become the new Falcon. And as much as they hate to admit it, seeing him in his new look has fans feeling that he looks more like the Vulture from the Spider-Man saga than anywhere close to how perfect Wilson looked as the superhero.

After Mackie's Sam Wilson took over the mantle of Captain America from Steve Rogers in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Danny Ramirez's Joaquin Torres became the McU's new Falcon.
Torres will be one of a few heroes taking the spotlight in 2025's Captain America: Brave New World, suiting up his wings in Mackie's first solo movie as the Star-Spangled Avenger.

Thankfully, we survived another frustrating hiatus.
It feels like it's been forever since Chicago Pd was on our screens, and the hiatuses have been frustrating.
But alas, Chicago Pd Season 11 Episode 10 is coming in hot with a ... spins wheel ... Hailey Upton installment.
By now, we're accustomed to the character-centric focus. We don't have to care for it, but we're used to it.
Despite annoyance about the formatting, the midseason premiere may feature most of the team.
Given that it has been a while since Chicago Pd Season 11 Episode 9, a refresher may be necessary.
"Somos Uno" was the rather abrupt and severely underwhelming conclusion to Dante Torres' storyline with the cartel wife.
While his canoodling with Gloria was a shocking development that arose when introduced, the storyline got shoved out of sight until it resurfaced and wrapped up abruptly, making many of us wonder about the necessity of it in the first place.

Leonel Moreno, the Venezuelan migrant and TikTok influencer, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) in Ohio after being a fugitive for two years.
Ice records reveal that the agency picked up Moreno, who is being held at Geauga County Jail.
He had been hunted by Ice ever since he crossed the border illegally at Eagle Pass, Texas, in April 2022.
The fugitive had been released as part of the Alternatives to Detention Program, which allows migrants on parole to go free while officials track them until their next court date. Moreno was due in Miami court in November 2022 but never showed up.
He made headlines recently after sharing tips on invading vacant homes and living off the United States government on his TikTok account @leitooficial_25, which had over 500,000 followers before it was suspended.
The videos led Ice to his whereabouts after he proved himself challenging to find.

Hey, "Chicago P.D." fans. Unfortunately, it's time to serve up some bad news again. Yeah, it turns out that NBC is setting new episodes of Chicago Pd aside for a couple of weeks. So, they aren't airing the next, new episode 10 of this current season 11 tonight, April 10, 2024, Wednesday night, April 17, 2024 and Wednesday night, April 24, 2024. Yeah, we're hearing from one of our sources that NBC doesn't plan to air the new episode 10 until Wednesday night, May 1, 2024 in its usual, 9 pm central standard time slot. So, certainly be sure to commit that important date and time to memory if you can. Until then, we can tell you that the NBC folks will be serving up some repeat episodes of Chicago Pd during this 3-week delay. According to the TV guide listings, they're re-airing the 4th episode of this season 11 tonight titled, "Escape." We live in a society that insists if you work hard, you can probably achieve the goals you've set for yourself. But "Problemista," the first feature film by writer and comedian Julio Torres, which is now in theaters worldwide, poses the question: is working hard always enough? Loosely based off of Torres's own immigration experience, the film follows Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador struggling to make his dream a reality in New York City who loses his job and desperately needs to secure a sponsor to stay in the States. Even after taking a freelance assistant gig with an erratic art critic named Elizabeth (played by Tilda Swinton), Alejandro (played by Torres) finds himself in one of the most relentless and nightmarish mazes of American bureaucracy - the US immigration system.

It’s a slow weekend for theatrical releases but a great one for streaming debuts. The hottest title is a surefire Oscar candidate, and the others have become fan favorites with long shelf lives ahead.
The contender to watch this week: “Dune: Part Two“
Denis Villeneuve‘s first “Dune” won six of its 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects. His second, 2024’s highest-grossing movie to date, could show up in many of the same categories next year. Timothée Chalamet probably has a better shot at a nomination for the Bob Dylan biopic he’s currently shooting, and if Zendaya deserves recognition for anything, it’s “Challengers.” But even without acting contenders, “Dune: Part Two” could rank among next season’s biggest players. It’s still in theaters, but you can now ride the sandworm at home by renting or purchasing the film on VOD.

There have been experimental, freestyling essay films and memoiristic documentaries around for years, going back to Chris Marker’s Sans Soleil or Agnès Varda’s The Gleaners and I. Like an extension of the creative-writing exhortation to “write about what you know” young documentary-makers are increasingly shooting movies about not just who they are but also their family history. “Disappear Completely” may suffer from diminishing returns, but there’s an ironic pleasure in a movie about a cursed man losing his five senses one at a time that gets gradually worse as you watch it.
Caught somewhere between Dan Gilroy’s “Nightcrawler” and Sam Raimi’s “Drag Me to Hell,” director Luis Javier Henain’s Spanish-language horror won the attention of genre fans out of Fantastic Fest 2022 but just started streaming in the U.S. on Netflix Friday, April 12. Chicago P.D. introduced Office Dante Torres as a hard-nosed cop willing to do anything to get the job done.
Torres is from the streets and part of his identity is expressed in the tattoos adorning his body.
Some Chicago P.D. fans might not realize that actor Benjamin Levy Aguilar (he plays Torres) has no tattoos.
This means he has to sit through an extensive process to have the tattoos added to his body when Torres shows parts of his body on screen.
Shower scenes are particularly noteworthy because of the huge cross Torres has on his back. That cross has to be reapplied each time Torres exposes his back.
It’s a lot of work to get his character camera-ready, but Torres has been a great addition to Intelligence in recent seasons.

Blur took the stage at Coachella on Saturday, and to close out their portion of the night, they brought out performers from the Torres Martinez Cahuilla Bird Singers.
It was Blur’s first time at Coachella since 2013 (though Damon Albarn has made a few surprise appearances in recent years), and the band delivered renditions of some of their most beloved songs, like “Song 2,” “Girls & Boys,” “Beetlebum,” and more.
The Britpop legends first brought out a group of Bird Singers to perform a traditional piece titled “Bird Song,” honoring the culture and history of the indigenous tribes of the Coachella region. From there, the Bird Singers loaned their voices to Blur’s “Death of a Party,” and then returned at the end of the night to close out the set with “Tender.”

After much anticipation, the sequel to the 2017 sketch “Papyrus 2” has finally emerged despite being cut for time during the live broadcast, making its debut on YouTube.
The original sketch was conceived by former “SNL” writer Julio Torres, who was inspired by a past tweet in which he mused, “Every day I wake up and remember that Avatar, a huge international blockbuster, used the Papyrus font for their logo, and no one stopped them.”

The original sketch was conceived by former “SNL” writer Julio Torres, who was inspired by a past tweet in which he mused, “Every day I wake up and remember that Avatar, a huge international blockbuster, used the Papyrus font for their logo, and no one stopped them.”

Chicago P.D. is on an extended spring hiatus as the show takes a break before its race to the season finale.
This is unfortunate timing, as the recent episodes of the show had ramped up fans’ interest, with Intelligence tracking a serial killer and then wrapping up the Torres undercover case.
At the same time, many fans may be upset that it feels like the season just began. The season premiere debuted in January, and the season finale will arrive in May.
Two Hollywood strikes delayed the production of the One Chicago shows. Many cast and crew members took to the picket lines to fight for better benefits.
And coming up soon, one of the main characters is leaving Intelligence for good. Many online rumors have fans guessing what will happen to Detective Hailey Upton (played by Tracy Spiridakos).

If there is one thing inevitable about getting attached to a doctor on Grey's Anatomy, you're toying with fire.
Numerous beloved cast members have come and gone from the hit hospital drama since it first aired in 2005.
One of those characters is Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), which fans saw the return of in Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 4.
Dr. Robbins has undoubtedly had one of the most exciting story arcs in the show.
She played a pivotal and inspirational character during the roughly nine years she was an attending surgeon and chief of pediatric surgery.
After six years of not being on the show, she returned for Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 4 to perform a revolutionary fetal brain surgery.
Astonishing, to say the least, but did her return hit us in the feels the way we had hoped?

Chicago P.D. is finally circling back to the Gloria Perez case.
This means Officer Dante Torres will be the member of Intelligence that the next new episode focuses on.
As Chicago P.D. fans have noticed, the show shifts between characters now, with singular episodes focusing on a character rather than the team.
This shift in presentation continues with a new episode called Somos Uno, where viewers learn what Torres (played by Benjamin Levy Aguilar) has been up to while undercover.
The Chicago P.D. cast introduced Yara Martinez as Gloria Perez earlier this season.
Perez became an informant for Torres as Intelligence worked to take down a drug ring. Things got messy at the end of that episode when Perez and Torres became intimate during the case.
Chicago P.D. Season 11, Episode 9 synopsis

In 2024, could there be sure a thing as a “hip film studio” that would attract both filmmakers and adventurous filmgoers despite the subject matter or “creatives”? From the intense internet “buzz” the answer is a big yes. A century ago it was those Warner Brothers with their urban crime thrillers (before expanding into swashbucklers and tearjerkers). And there are those studios that specialize in a genre as Blumhouse does with horror and the Marvel Studios with their comics properties. Perhaps the last time a studio inspired nearly blind loyalty may have been in the early 90s with Miramax, which introduced us to, among many, Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino before one of the founders started the spark that became “Me Too”. Today it is A24, which grabbed the top six Oscars a year ago. Last week saw the release of Love Lies Bleeding. From that quirky crime noir/love story...

Spoiler Alert: The last two paragraphs of this review contains spoilers.
“Mamífera” introduces 40-year-old Lola (Maria Rodríguez Soto) having tender sex with boyfriend Bruno (Enric Auquer), standing up in the shower. Then, sitting on their bed, they dry off together, him seated behind her, carefully using a hairdryer on her hair, and at one point playfully directing its jet of warm air down the front of her panties. In this short but intimate sequence, writer-director Liliana Torres conjures worlds of easy, contented empathy between two people who know each other’s bodies very well indeed, but have not grown remotely tired of one another.
Unbeknownst to Lola and Bruno, their bond is about to be tested by a pregnancy so unexpected that it isn’t detected until 10 weeks gestation. It’s worlds away from the experience of Lola’s friend Judit (Ruth Llopis), who is coincidentally trying to conceive via IVF,...

Perhaps the only sane way to tell a story about the U.S. Immigration system is to make it as absurd and fantastical as possible, and Julio Torres’ “Problemista,” like his HBO series “Los Espookys,” is packed with visually elaborate set pieces that feel handmade and human. But the most complex build of the film — one that also features a child’s impossible dream castle and a maze of immigration offices laid out like the world’s worst ant farm — was located in Torres’ vision of the digital world.
Larry Owens personifies the website Craigslist, to which Torres’ character Alejandro turns to raise the cash to process his work sponsorship forms for his visa, assuming that the mercurial Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton) will, in fact, sign them. There’s no doubt an element of wish-fulfillment at play when you’re a debut queer filmmaker casting Tilda Swinton as the lead of your movie.
That’s the case for the 37-year-old Julio Torres, a seasoned comedian onstage and former writer of “Saturday Night Live” (2016 through 2021) and co-creator of HBO’s short-lived cult series “Los Espookys.” His new A24 comedy “Problemista,” now in select theaters before opening wide on March 22, has already grossed more than $690,000 in just a handful of theaters. He stars in the endearing comedy as Alejandro, a fledgling toy designer hustling in New York in the last few days before his visa expires and he’s sent back to Central America. Alejandro accepts an assistant job under Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton), a whirling dervish and New York art scene castaway with faded magenta hair and a short fuse who tasks him with organizing a posthumous show for her dead artist husband,...

Story Ave starring Luis Guzman grossed $9.85k in a limited opening at one theater, Quad Cinema, with multiple sold-out shows. The first feature from director Aristotle Torres, which won for Best Cinematography at SXSW (see Deadline review) expands to Chicago and the Bronx next week, followed by LA and additional markets October 13.
Guzman plays a no-nonsense subway operator who becomes an unlikely mentor to a teenager (Asante Blackk) caught up in the dangerous world of Bronx graffiti gangs. Written by Torres and Bonsu Thompson. Produced by Jamie Foxx.
In an overall market “that’s not exactly easy,” Story Ave pulled in a diverse crowd, said Kino’s director of theatrical distribution, Maxwell Wolkin. “You have to get creative, and find an angle, and find things that hit. And it’s not necessarily always what you expect, but this film is audience friendly, it’s got a real voice, it’s connecting with people.

An aspiring mugger attempting his first stickup job has a lot to worry about. There’s a million ways that a sidewalk robbery could go wrong, from a target turning violent and pulling a gun to police catching the crime and making an arrest. But nobody ever thinks about the humiliating possibility that the would-be victim is completely unfazed by the criminal’s attempts at intimidation and simply takes pity on them.
That’s what happens in an early scene in “Story Ave” when Kadir (Asante Blackk), a shy teenager who clearly has no business getting involved with street crime, attempts to jump a stranger on the subway. A promising young painter, Kadir desperately wants to become a crew member of a local gang and graffiti collective that runs his corner of the Bronx. He’s much more interested in the spray painting — which the crew sees as “modern hieroglyphics...

Near the end of Aristotle Torres’ assured feature debut “Story Ave,” a title card comes up on the screen, noting the film is “by The Bronx.” It’s a short moment, leading into the end credits, but it nevertheless speaks volumes to the textured approach that Torres gives to a film that, at least in its outline form, could feel cliché. A narrative about a gifted young artist Kadir (Asante Blackk), who falls into a gang as a result of buried trauma revolving around this family, only to be pulled out by a kind, lonely, older man Luis (Luis Guzmán) might have the surface trappings of a move-of-the-week, but Torres brings out enough stylistic flourishes and lived-in performances to elevate “Story Ave” into being one of the undersung movies of the year so far.

It lasted only one season, but fans still mourn the demise of the sci-fi/western Firefly. As much as we love watching (and rewatching) the series, sometimes it's not enough.
Are you longing for a little more Captain Tight Pants? Want to see Zoe quietly kick some adversary's butt? Wishing you could revisit the Hero of Canton?
Well, we can't bring back Firefly -- oh, how we wish we could! -- but we can tell you where you can tune in to see the cast now.
If you can't get enough of the crew of the Serenity, read on to find out where you can see them now.

Shepherd Book was the preacher with a cryptic past who boards the Serenity and befriends its crew. We loved Book's warmth and acceptance of his other crew members while still being able to hold onto his faith.

"Suits" is one of the unlikeliest TV hits of 2023 -- mostly, because it ended its original run back in 2019. Given new life on Netflix, it's a show that has captivated audiences like no other, in part due to its episodic storytelling, and hundreds of episodes. The cast of "Suits" included the likes of Meghan Markle, Wendell Pierce and Gina Torres, and was known for shocking twists and turns that helped sustain the story for over so many episodes.
While "Suits" wasn't the kind of show to start suddenly killing off characters, there were a few big name departures, -- like Markle, who departed for royal reasons, and Gina Torres, who made her departure from the show after season 7 due to her busy schedule. Torres played Jessica Pearson, who started out as a diversity hire at Gordon Schmidt Van Dyke before eventually becoming the managing partner of Pearson Specter Litt. In...
