- On Saturday, June 23rd, 1917, he pitched an "almost perfect" game against the Washington Senators. Starting pitcher Babe Ruth walked the first batter and was ejected for arguing with the home-plate umpire about his balls/strikes calls, and Shore relieved him. During the next player's at-bat, the runner at first base was caught stealing. Shore then retired the next 26 batters, in a row.
