DJ Mark The 45 King, best known as the producer of classic hits by Eminem, Jay-Z, and Queen Latifah, has died at 62 years old.
The news was first shared on Thursday, October 19th by DJ Premier, who posted a statement on Instagram that the Bronx native had died in the morning — just days after celebrating his birthday. No cause of death has been revealed, but Premier mentioned that The 45 King had recently been in the hospital.
Born Mark Howard James, The 45 King helped form Flavor Unit — a group of rappers and DJs from New York City and Northern New Jersey which counted Queen Latifah, Chill Rob G, Lakim Shabazz, and Apache among its members — in the late 1980s. Latifah signed to Tommy Boy Records in 1989, and featured his production heavily on her debut album, All Hail the Queen, including her breakout hit, “Ladies First.”

The album title consists of four names that need no introduction: Snoop, Cube, 40, hort. These rap icons justly claim themselves as architects of West Coast hip-hop. As Mount Westmore, they’re a supergroup whose presence is etched in the California landscape.
Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, E-40, and Too hort also represent a wave of old-school rappers sustaining recording careers well into their 50s, long after the hits have subsided, and fans have moved on to fresher trends. While I’m never going to consider it a “good” movie, I’m strangely glad that director Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot 1998 remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho exists. It only serves to make the original movie that much better (as though such a thing was possible) by demonstrating all the things Hitchcock does so perfectly that the remake gets perfectly wrong. Think of it as a $20 million experimental film; now that is has been tried and failed, we know that the experiment doesn’t need repeating. That alone has to be worth something.
Coming off the enormous box office success and a bunch of Oscar nominations for Good Will Hunting, indie director Gus Van Sant suddenly found himself with a great deal of studio clout. Ever the outsider artist, Van Sant decided to cash in all of that goodwill by finally realizing a long-held desire to do a shot-for-shot remake of Psycho—which,...

The showrunner spoke recently to The Hollywood Reporter. When asked what he had in mind for the sophomore season, moreover, if it would pick up a bit later in Norman's teenage years, Cuse said: "I don't want to say exactly how we're going to do that. Certainly the events at end of this season are very much in play when season two opens."

It's a shame The Psycho Legacy didn't come out a couple years ago. True, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Hitchcock's classic, so the timing is perfect. But released on the heels of Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, one can't help but compare the two, and the Psycho documentary comes up lacking.
That should not be the case. After all, Psycho has deeper roots, interwoven into generations of moviegoers since the 60's. One can argue that Freddy might not have appeared on the big screen had Norman Bates not paved the way. But the filmmakers stumble at the start, spending less time discussing the...
